Digicel Sponsors Annual Cabbage Patch Regatta

September 10, 2012

Digicel Bermuda is the title sponsorship of the 3rd Annual Digicel Cabbage Patch Charity Keelboat Regatta in partnership with the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club to take place Sunday, September 16th 2012.

Launched in 2010, this fundraising event acts as a vehicle for the sailing community to showcase their skill in an exciting and entertaining race while supporting a community oriented charity.

While Meals on Wheels was the beneficiary of the inaugural event and The Bermuda Diabetes Association benefited last year, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club has chosen The Reading Clinic as this year’s charity recipient. The Reading Clinic is a registered charity that promotes literacy and numeracy in Bermuda meeting the needs of children with dyslexia and learning difficulties.

“Education is fundamental to the success of a healthy society and empowering young people who learn differently is vital and commendable,” stated Digicel’s CEO Wayne Caines. “At Digicel we recognise the financial challenges facing local charities and we are delighted to be on board to support The Reading Clinic in this way.”

Digicel Sales Director, Shane McDonnell commented, “Digicel is pleased to have this opportunity to work alongside the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club for a third year in an effort to assist another notable charity. This fundraising event has proven to be quite successful in the past and with event organisers working diligently to put together an exciting package for participants and spectators, we anticipate an even more successful event this year.”

“The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club is excited to be the host club for the 3rd Annual Digicel Cabbage Patch Charity Keelboat Regatta,” said Rear Commodore of Sailing, Leatrice Roman. “This unique event allows Bermuda’s sailing community to raise funds for a great island charity, The Reading Clinic, while getting together for a fun day of racing.”

“When the concept of the Cabbage Patch Regatta formed, we were very pleased that Digicel wanted to partner with the sailing community in support if this great fundraising event,” adds Jon Corless, Regattta organiser.

“There aren’t too many places in the world where you can spend a mid-September Sunday out on the water with family, while supporting a community charity. We’re hoping that this year’s event will be bigger than last year’s race.”

The 3rd Annual Digicel Cabbage Patch Charity Keelboat Regatta is scheduled for Sunday, September 16th and is open to all boats with a PHRF rating. The first and second races will take place in the Great Sound, while the third race will take place around the sound and end at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

The entry fee is $50 per crew member and the intended first warning signal is 10:55am. A prize giving, barbeque and raffle will follow to ensure that this year’s fundraising goal is exceeded. For further details, NoR and entry forms visit www.rbyc.bm, the RBYC Sailing Office or email cabbagepatchrbyc@gmail.com.

In addition to providing lead sponsorship for the Digicel Cabbage Patch Charity Keelboat Regatta’s third consecutive year, Digicel has served as the official mobile provider for the Argo Gold Cup results team for the past two years. In 2011 Digicel donated four Opti Sailing Boats to the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club for the Waterwise sailing programme and sponsored sailing kits for those children who competed in the 2012 World Opti Championships in Dominican Republic.
