Man Brought To BDA After Explosion On Ship

A 33-year-old Filipino national — who suffered full body burns after an explosion on a ship located 140 miles off the island — was brought to Bermuda early this morning [Sept 29] for medical care.

The injured man was transferred to the pilot boat St David, taken to Ordnance Island, and take via ambulance to KEMH for treatment.

The ship is presently anchored 1.5 miles east of St David’s Lighthouse where she is awaiting inspection.

The BMOC Duty Officer said: “At 3:05pm on Friday 28th September the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre received a satellite telephone call from the Marshall Islands registered 33,044 gross tons bulk carrier Sea Moon en route from New Orleans to Karachi, Pakistan with a cargo of coal.

“The ship was reporting an explosion in a cargo hold resulting in the loss of a crew member overboard in a position 140 miles southwest of Bermuda. The ship advised that her fast rescue boat had been lowered into the water and the crew member recovered.

“The 33 year old Filipino national had suffered full body burns and the ship was diverting to Bermuda for medical evacuation. An inspection of the hold indicated that there was no fire, the cargo was stable and there was no damage to the ships’ hull.

“The Sea Moon arrived off the east end of Bermuda at 2:45am on the morning of Saturday 29th September and local authorities boarded her in company with a doctor. The casualty was stretcher transferred to the pilot boat St David and conveyed to Ordnance Island where an ambulance was waiting to take him to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

“The ship is presently at anchor 1.5 miles east of St David’s Lighthouse where she will remain until company representatives and surveyors have inspected her,” the Duty Officer concluded.
