Two People Charged With Importing Heroin

September 8, 2012

Yesterday [Sept 7] in Magistrates Court, Shakeda Davis, 24, and Winston Burgess, 48, were charged with importing heroin.

The indictable charges were that between a date unknown and 24th April 2012, they conspired with others to import diamorphine [heroin]. The amount of heroin involved was said to be just over 154 grams.

Ms Davis alone faced a second charge of refusing to supply a sample of her hand-writing when requested to do so. This second offence was alleged to have occurred on 27th April 2012.

Because the matter will be handled in the Supreme Court, neither person was required to enter a plea.

Ms Davis was remanded into custody. Mr Burgess was granted bail of $40,000 with one like surety and required to surrender his travel documents.

If found guilty, throw the book at them.

This is the root cause of all our social ills in Bermuda and a drain on what little resources we have to deal with the addicts that these two are “feeding”.

Time for the courts to get serious with drug importers, especially diamorphine

    • Wheerzs Waldo? says:

I agree the side effects caused by the sale, importation and use of these drugs is far reaching!!! Quadruple the fines and double the times. Apparently the risk versus reward factor is not enough of a deterrant to most as we see stories like this one in the news almost daily.

OK …NOW do u see why some people like me say things that go against the NORM’….nothing in your comment was of any use to resolve that problem it was just your opinion very much like everyone else so i respect that.
Now my opinion is as follows: You call it a “Controlled Substance” where is the “Control”.? “Control” IT and Dispense it to the already addicted …have them registered…any New comers will give you the new stats on its usage…
      Do the math…Control it
      Dispense it
      Monitor it
No more Crimes committed to get money for it.
Then you implement harsh sentences for anyone found outside of the facility in possession of said substance case closed no court no public attorneys straight jail.
I think that takes a Bite out of Crime.
Do this for all “Controlled Substances”…Get a Handle on the situation . BECAUSE YOU CAN”T BEAT THE DRUG INDUSTRY..it is bigger than any Corporation on this Planet also run by the same People.
      Wake up people Please….

    • What Next says:

It is sad but they don’t have to buy it neither so it goes two ways.

      • Come Correct says:

When you’re addicted yes you do, no heroin addict will willingly put themselves through the torture of withdrawls, thus you obtain the substance by any means necessary. I’m with keepin it real on this one. At least by controling it you give addicts the opportunity to get good quality clean heroin(morphine) instead of them buying the stuff off the street thats been cut down with god knows what household chemicals to increase profits, all while taking money out of the hands of dope dealers…but that’s far too intelligent. That’s a pretty good example of what you don’t do when trying to bring an island to its knees all while being for the people.
