Upcoming: PartnerRe Women’s 5K Run & Walk

September 25, 2012

The 15th Annual PartnerRe Women’s 5K Run & Walk will be held on Sunday, October 7 at the Botanical Gardens starting at 8:30am.

The largest all-female event on Bermuda’s sporting calendar, it includes a 5K race for women, a 5K walk as well as corporate and school team events and a 2K run for girls under 15. The goal is female fitness, health, safety and self-esteem and all proceeds go annually to a cause that promotes these values.

Start of the 2011 PartnerRe Women’s 5K Run:

Now in its 15th year, the PartnerRe Women’s 5K Run & Walk is presented by Mid-Atlantic Athletic Club [MAAC], sponsored by PartnerRe Ltd. and sanctioned by the Bermuda Track and Field Association [BTFA].

The 2012 beneficiary will be the Women’s Resource Centre. The WRC was founded in 1987 as the Rape Crisis Centre, a crisis intervention service for survivors of sexual assault. Through its 25 year history, the WRC has evolved greatly in its mandate and services to meet the increasing community need to protect and assist women who are victims of violence and provide support for other issues that women may be trying to resolve.

In 1992, the organization officially changed its name to the Women’s Resource Centre. During that same year, the WRC expanded to offer a counseling programme to victims of domestic violence, a 24-hour crisis hot-line, and a community education programme. For the past few years, the WRC has begun using a ‘prevention’ model in providing their services.

They continue to offer assistance in the areas of sexual assault and domestic violence support, with a more specific focus on sexual assault awareness and prevention. The WRC’s core efforts are focused on the empowerment of women, with their programs and services reflecting their desire to empower the women of Bermuda to become catalysts in creating strong families and a strong community.

PartnerRe Ltd., title sponsor of the event, is a global reinsurer based in Bermuda with offices around the world. Visit partnerre5k.bm for more details.

Whilst I applaud this initiative, may I PLEASE implore that walkers be mindful of where they are walking..even on “marshalled” routes? Just because you are participating in a charity walk does not give you the right to walk all over the road. PLEASE keep yourselves, dogs and baby strollers on the side, be mindful that you may be drifting towards the center line while you are chatting with your fellow walkers…(remember “single-file” in the old days?)- remember that motorists are not as polite and forgiving as they used to be. Let’s not have a nasty accident be the wake-up call for these events.
