Members and friends of the Vasco Da Gama Club gathered last night [Oct 11] to celebrate the organization’s 77th Anniversary.

Speaking at the event, Vasco President Andrea Moniz DeSouza said, “I consider myself honoured to have been given the chance to be the President of the Vasco Da Gama Club and to continue the Portuguese traditions in Bermuda.”

Those in attendance included Acting Premier Dame Jennifer Smith, National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief and Shadow Attorney General Trevor Moniz.

The Club, named after the famed Portuguese explorer, was founded in Hamilton, Bermuda on or around October 11th 1935. The exact date is unknown but recalled as being between October 7th and October 11th.

The original founders key objectives were to create an environment dedicated to the development and preservation of the Portuguese language and culture and to assist any member of the association during a time of need

I see a couple of dark skinned people mingling about, wonder if they are portuguese born or children of portuguese residents in Bermuda.

    • Family Man says:

Who cares how light or dark their skin is?? The event was for members and friends. Didn’t say anything about pigmentation.

    • Idiot Comment says:

This has to be the most idiotic comment I’ve ever read. Have you ever been to Portugal? The more SOUTH YOU GO THE DARKER THEY GET. Know the world and its countries instead of making stupid comments like that.

    • Mad Dawg says:

Do you look at the Premier and wonder if she was Canadian born?

Congratulations to Vasco Da Gama Club on the celebration of their 77 years in Bermuda. The Portuguese have made a tremendous impact on our island since their arrival in the 1800′s. Having married a Ferreira, I remind my three sons of their proud Portuguese heritage!
