Books Featuring Young Writers To Be Released

November 6, 2012

CKC Books and CKC Cares Charity will be releasing two anthologies of creative works by Bermuda’s youth – ‘Art is My Life’  and ‘Superstars Life through Little Eyes.’

The purpose of the project was to provide an opportunity for the island’s youth to freely share their interests, thoughts and concerns through poetry, visual arts and short stories. It was open to public and private school students of all ages, and  over 70 submissions were received. The publications were supported by the Minister of Education Dame Jennifer Smith and the Cultural Legacy Fund.

Originally, the plan was to publish one book of poetry, short stories and visual arts but after receiving a large volume of entries with extremely different themes, CKC decided to work on two separate publications.

‘Superstars – Life through Little Eyes’ contains over thirty pieces of writing and artwork, displaying amazing talents from primary and middle school level. The cover and topics are appropriate for children between the ages of 5-13 years of age, and the cover design and illustration are by James Lee.

‘Art is My Life’ is a collection of poetry and short story writings by extraordinary teens. Contributors from Berkeley Institute, Bermuda High School, CedarBridge Academy and Saltus have demonstrated a keen interest in heavy topics affecting the island and displayed confidence in sharing their views. The cover was designed by 19-year-old Makeem Bartley.

The community is invited to a book release event scheduled for Thursday November 15, 2012 at Elliott Primary School. The event will begin at 6pm and will feature contributors reading their entries. The featured guests will be available to autograph copies of the publications. Seating is limited for the free event so it is best to RSVP at ckccorporation.com, via email at info@ckccorporation.com or call 441-519-2338.

To celebrate the release, the books will be on sale at the event at $20 each [$10 off the original cost]. To reserve books, especially large orders, please complete the pre-order form on the CKC Corporation website. Proceeds from book sales will assist with the publishing of the 2013/2014 projects.

Hmmminteresting! I remember when our children made books at school with the help of PTA and had a tea party and booksigning ..I still have those books and cherish them, I always get a giggle when I read them. Dame Jennifer was also education minister back then, I wonder if any other children remember writing, designing, and producing their own books..maybe the Dame can call for those books as well! All the children each year wrote about a particular experience also using illustrations! it was a surprise to us as parents when we got to the tea party and saw what they had produced!
