Video: PLP Accuse OBA Of ‘Wanting It Both Ways’
[Updated] With 27 days to go until the General Election, the PLP has released a new video accusing the OBA of “wanting to have it both ways” and “telling the electorate whatever it wants to hear.”
“It is not about principle with the OBA, it’s about politics,” said Minister Glenn Blakeney who is running in C#13 “This ad is effective not just because it’s funny, but, because it speaks to a deep truth about the both ways OBA. They are not driven by principle, they are about saying whatever it takes to win back power.
“Out of the one side of their mouth, they say that deep and radical cuts to jobs, FutureCare and DayCare are necessary in order to reduce debt. Out of the other side of their mouth, they say that they are going to engage in $500 million in new spending and new tax cuts. The OBA cannot have it both ways, and they need to tell the Bermudian people the truth about their real agenda.”
The two parties had exchanged words last week, with the OBA saying that under an OBA Government seniors currently enrolled in FutureCare will see no change in their benefits and said the “government election machine” is trying to win seniors’ votes through “fear-mongering and lies.”
The PLP responded saying the OBA continues to try and have it both ways on FutureCare, and accused the OBA of telling voters what they think they to hear and “not being honest about what they will cut or how much they plan on adding to the debt.”
Update 9.43pm: In response OBA Chairman Chairman Thad Hollis said: “Sadly for Bermuda, it’s now clear that this Government, its ministers and candidates are more interested in playing with puppets and chasing “secret plans” than addressing the serious challenges facing Bermuda’s families, workers and seniors.
“Let’s keep the focus on what is real. Because of this Government’s failed economic policies:
- More than 10,000 Bermudians – a staggering 25% of the workforce – are now unemployed or underemployed.
- Nearly 4 out of 10 young Bermudians are unable to find a job.
Mr Hollis continued: “Bermuda is in a deep economic crisis that is causing hardship and pain to thousands of families across the Island while the Government spends time playing with puppets.
“Bermuda needs a government focused on the real problems that real people are facing, bringing forward real change to improve the quality of their lives.
“The One Bermuda Alliance will bring that change. We will ensure seniors’ FutureCare health care benefits are protected. We will preserve Day Care for families in need. And we will grow jobs.
“Our Economic Recovery and Jobs Plan contains specific measures to support small business, stimulate investment, protect Bermudian-held jobs, and get the construction industry back on its feet.
“It’s time for change… to a government that faces up to its responsibilities to tackle real problems facing real people every day.
“This is the change Bermuda needs, and the change the people of Bermuda deserve. This election is about more of the same excuses government or change for Bermuda. The choice is clear,” concluded Mr Hollis concluded.
Update Nov 20, 4.01pm: A PLP spokesperson said: “The OBA and activist supporters failed to address the substance of our argument. The truth of the matter is that the OBA is trying to have it both ways.
“One OBA has called for rapid and radical cuts. This OBA is on the record opposing PLP investments in job training, FutureCare, DayCare and EEZ grants. The other OBA has called for an estimated $500 million in new spending and tax cuts.
“The OBA is trying to have it both ways. They’re trying to tell you that they can magically balance the budget while also radically increasing spending. The OBA is at war with itself and it’s time for them to tell us who they really stand for and what they’re really about?”

Aside from SAC Re, can you state the “whole bunch” of companies you are referring too?
They are investment vehichles, no fully functioning new full suite employee companies. In reality it is more like a new product being offered for sale by an existing company. It has to be a separte legal entity to ringfence the ownership and leally protect the investment. New company does not equal new employer.

OBA, PLP and the UBP before them are all political parties and as such they have and will continue to make hollow campaign promises because we as an electorate are LAZY and they know this, and play to it! We don’t bother to dig beneath the surface, heck, we don’t even scratch at it. The vast majority of us sleep walk through the process and tend to wake up when someone shouts the loudest.
I really like Minister Blakeney. For me, he is one of the very few good guys. But Minister while I watch the video with some amusement and for sure get the points being made, it really amounts to no more than the pot calling the kettle black and here’s what I’m referring too:
1. Leading up to the historic 1998 election the PLP hammered home the point that the then leaders of the country, the UBP, had all but given away the rights of Bermudian workers, as the non Bermudian work force at the time hovered around 18.5%. Fast forward several years after assuming the reigns the non bermudian workforce swelled to almost 28%.
2. The PLP told us that under the UBP, Blacks continued to be disenfranchised and local Black contractors and small black owned businesses where frozen out of government contracts and that would change under their rule.
Last time I checked, the names Correira, Lopes and DeSilva didn’t belong to Black folks.
3.The PLP told us that the UBP had all but destroyed the education system when they built that mega-school, Cedarbridge Acad…and yet in quick time the Berkeley Alum in Cabinet destroyed that argument by doing the same thing and simultaneously blew the budget by over $50,000,000.00
4.The PLP had us convinced that they had all of the answers to turn around our public education system that the UBP had all but destroyed. Fast forward 14 years later, and at least 8 different Ministers of Education later (could be more) and over a Billion Dollars spent and you would be hard pressed to find many educators that would agree that we have made any progress.
5.Tourism–Sigh! It’s to painful to discuss just how far we have declined under the PLP. And the vast majority of the little tourism business received comes from the least profitable sector –cruise ship passengers.
6.The PLP slammed the UBP for being poor custodians of the public purse but 14 years later we have gone from a deficit of approximately $165 million to close to $1.5 Billion under the PLP
7.The PLP slammed the UBP for their record on dealing with crime–do i really need to go much further with this? I think not!
8.The PLP pointed to all sorts of scandals that apparently happend on the UBP watch, ‘Wreck Hill’, The National Stadium development, Tynes Bay etc etc, ..but again do I really need expand on what has unfolded over the past 14 years.
By now I think that you get the point….

Annie…I’m Bermudian and I have worked for Dunkley’s for 2 years and I love my job…there are many BERMUDIAN staff members who have been working here for decades…there are even families who work here…can’t be that bad eh? The benefits are excellent and you have a guaranteed paycheck each week…a security right now that should not be taken for granted. The problem is that too many Bermudians (I’m generalizing here and I apologize to those who buck the trend) do not appreciate what they have…there are always problems at every job…that’s why it’s called ‘work’ and not ‘play’…too many focus on the negative and forget the positive…too many focus on doing as little as possible instead of as much as possible. What ever happened to taking pride in your job and doing your best? Whatever happened to everyone pulling together to get work done instead of behaving in a polarizing manner stating:’that’s not my job’…perhaps the only good thing that will come from these hard times is some level of appreciation!

Sounds OK to me. The UBP are trying to win back power. Sad thing is, they can’t get their story straight.
Out of interest, does the PLP actually have a “story”, or is their whole campaign going to consist of smearing the OBA?
Take a long hard look at the ad, and think back to the time of Eugene Cox and Freddie Wade and what their generation would have to say on it if they were still around. The children of the labour movement have made it clear that they’ve no substance and no dignity.
Is the PLP going to put out anything beyond rhetoric or a smear campaign over the next 27 days? The island is in a bad way, and the only credible thing they’ve put out is a Job Corps program that will cost $6.5mil a year, with only 4 people bothering to turn up to hear about it.
The PLP in it’s current form are childish, arrogant and clearly out of ideas on how to turn the economy, social ills and a failing education system around. It’s pathetic, standing on the shoulders of giants and loosening their bowels all over their heads.
While I’m here, WHERE ARE THE GCSE RESULTS? Do our current students stand any chance of finding white collar work? All well and good to say “You must hire Bermudians”, unless the system’s failed them and they lack basic skills in maths and English. What hope will parents have of their children surpassing them in earnings if they’ve no opportunity to achieve a good education.
Goose you well know that the generation of Mr.Cox , Mr.L.F.Wade and , Dame Browne Evans were collectively denied access to the Largess of this country . I really do not know what to say in regards to this political add. I watched it and shook my head. I feel as if us, the voters are being laughed at by this type of advertising. How can we as voters take our own government seriously if this is what the produce to try and get our votes.
I know this election is going to get ugly but both parties need to just tell the truth and what there goals are. We know many of the facts just show us what your plans are, how you are going to get there and stop the name calling on who did this, who didn’t and all that nonsense it is as if we are in a kids playground.
I also think the puppets and puppeteering could have been a little better for 1.5 billion dollars as well. It was a good attempt.. but honestly they would of have to been pretty amazing puppets for me to take this seriously.

I have voted for the PLP in the past (pre Dr. Browne era) and I will say that I will not be voting that way this time. However, as a Bermudian I am so embarrassed that the current leaders and possible future leaders of this country would think that this was a good idea!

Reality check , Mr.Cannonier has so far denied the electorate a chance to see , to get an unbiased view into the intellect of the man . He has ignored calls for him to come on any and all talk shows , he has been invited to participate in a one on one debate with the party leader of the ruling party . I always thought they were a bunch of muppets. Still they spend most of their time with their finger up their butt so I guess they’re used to this sort of thing.
At the end of the day they’re just trying to get their message across to the public that they are the people pulling the strings (the puppet masters of P Hell P) and sticking their fingers up peoples bottoms to make them vote.

This is the most truly awful, childish and unsophisticated advert ever and embarassing to Bermuda to be part of a political campaign. It looks like a project given to primary school children. The fact that this ad begins with “The following is a paid political broadcast from the Progressive Labour Party” makes it a remarkably good explanation as to why this country is as deeply in debt as it has become in the last 14 years.
Even if the message they were trying to convey was true, I can’t begin to understand what possessed any intelligent person to choose this as their means to express it. What do they think it says about how they perceive Bermudian voters?
I can only hope no one chooses to follow in their footsteps and use this style of political ad or I will have to seriously reconsider who I’m voting for.

Hey OBA like Romney…one question!? Do you and all members of your family have full time employment outside of the Bermuda Government? My guess is no! If I am wrong I aoplogiize, but I’m guessing that if you were in business for yourself, working in tourism, construction, insurance, reinsurance, banking or anywhere else other than for the Bermuda Governement you would not be feeling so good about your future. Some of us don’t work for the government, many of us have been laid off, and some of us have invested our hard earned money in our childrens College and University Education and have little hope that they has something to look forward to!
Based on past results and based on what the future holds, why would you expect anyone to vote for the PLP. The blasted the former UBP about haow they ran the country and they have not made on F’n improvement in 14 years. Every single project that they have touched from Berkely to Whites Island has cost us millions extra and has been involved in some sneaky way.

As a former PLP supporter this poorly scripted and badly executed ad is an embarrassment to me and to current supporters who think they are supporting a forward looking positive party with something to offer. The ad offers absolutely nothing. For potential investors and current investors in our economy this ad signifies absolutely no hope. C’mon PLP surely you can do better. Where is the plan. Where is the spirit lifting, goal setting, hope generating, inspirational leadership that a ‘Governing’ party should have.

I’m not interested in hope. Hope’s horse has long since bashed the fence, bolted the lane, careened into the oncoming reality of economy, crime, and education, and subsequently has been put down.
What I am interested in is action. Not the
* commitment to,
* review of potential for,
* construction of panel (committee, board, …) to discuss (reach out to, …) possible,
* investigation of,
* drawing together of stakeholders for intention of (commitment to, …),
* hiring of consultants for,
* commissioning of report for,
* brainstorming of ideas that may one day, in the forever distant future, potentially and/or perhaps lead to,
… action. But the realisation today and tomorrow and every day, hour, minute, second, and fractional second thereof, of the sustained implementation and public monitoring of solutions to the real critical issues facing this island territory today.
Who has a plan? A long term plan. With clear goals and measurable milestones and deadlines to its implementation. With public transparency of these without political rhetoric. Communication of progress that removes “I” from successes in favour of “we” and includes “I” in failures instead of “they”.
A plan. Deliverables with measurable milestones. Clear deadlines. Transparency. Accountability. Ownership of responsibility.
These are the things Bermuda needs. Not fracking puppet shows.

What an embarrassment. The PLP have taken Bermuda down from being a respected and leading International Financial centre. Can you imagine what the likes of Middle Eastern potential investors will be saying? They certainly won’t be saying “I can’t wait to do business with the PLP Government”. A friend and I went to a function on Sunday night – where the Premier was chief Patron and at the end of the event, the Premier shaerd a few words and at the end, she blessed the Pastor of the church with a financial blessing – she didn’t say the blessing was for the Church. There were ooh’s and aaah’s from those present and oh yes, the Amen’s. My feeling was that this was another way of sweeting the vote pot. After the wnderful evening of inspiration through singing and music – the above took away from it all, I would suggest all blessings shoudl be given in private by MP’s. May the Lord bless and keep us from more of satan’s snares.

I spent most of September, October & up to just past the elections traveling the lower SE States. Everyday we were inundated with not only the professional ads for the Presidential race but also all the local political ads for whoever was running for Senator or Congressman in whatever area we happened to be. These were nowhere as slick as the National Presidential ads but nothing, I mean absolutely NOTHING was as childish & amateurish as this PLP ad.
I guess it does say what needs to be said of the PLP. No plan to correct the mess they made, 0nly childish put downs.

Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash has resigned from Sesame Street after claims that he had sex with an under-aged boy.
Last week a man accused him of having sex with him when he was a teenager, which he denied.
The next day the man recanted the charge. A lawsuit by a second accuser has been filed, according to US lawyer Cecil Singleton.
Sesame Street says the controversy surrounding his personal life was “a distraction that none of us want”.
Kevin Clash, 52, created the voice and persona for Elmo in the 1980s.
The character has since become one of Sesame Street’s most popular.
Kevin Clash was given a leave of absence from the children’s show last week.
‘Sad day’
A Sesame Street statement said: “Kevin Clash has helped us achieve a mission for 28 years and none of us, especially Kevin, want anything to divert our attention from our focus on serving as a leading educational organisation.
“The controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction that no-one wants, and he has concluded that he can no longer be effective in his job and has resigned from Sesame Street.
“This is a sad day for Sesame Street.”
Kevin Clash did not deny the original relationship, but said it happened after the young man was an adult.
“I am relieved that this painful allegation has been put to rest,” he said in a statement. “I will not discuss it further.”
Sesame Street producers defended Kevin Clash last week but said he had shown “poor judgement” in breaking company policy on using the internet.
Mr Clash was the subject of a documentary Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey last year and has also won several Daytime Emmy awards for his work on Sesame Street.

Really? A puppet show? I’ll never know what was said because I can’t bring myself to watch this garbage. Please speak to all of us, not just the least prepared intellectually.
Please stop with the “This OBA is on the record opposing PLP investments in job training, FutureCare, DayCare and EEZ grants. The other OBA has called for an estimated $500 million in new spending and tax cuts.”
That is a gross misrepresentation of the facts. The OBA has been critical of the way in which FutureCare and DayCare have been handled, with good reason, but they have not opposed them, and they have repeatedly stated they do NOT plan to cut these services. Nor do they plan to cut seniors’ free bus and ferry rides, as the PLP have told seniors (they should be ashamed, scaring a vulnerable population with outright lies).
The OBA have opposed EEZ grants, which is the giving away of money, allowing only a select few to be assisted until the money runs out. They support the original concept of assisting businesses in obtaining loans – money which would be paid back. That makes better fiscal sense to me.
The PLP, in the person of David Burt, has pulled the figure of $500 million out of thin air, and it keeps getting repeated as if it were reality, till some folks believe the OBA actually said it.
What the PLP have not said, in all this spin and double speak, is what they actually WILL do to get us out of this very deep financial hole they have got us into. They can talk all they want to about debt ratios and GDP, but that has no bearing on the actually amount of money we owe (which, by the way, is increasing daily) and the dwindling workforce available to help pay it off. Simple equation – no job = no paycheck = no payroll tax = no money in government’s coffers to pay even the interest.
Surely the PLP have something concrete in the works beyond this airy-fairy 10 Point Plan. Are they the ones being secretive? Or do they just not know what to do and are busy spending what little is left on more vehicles and travel.
