Richards: ‘Government’s Record Of Job Losses’

December 7, 2012

Bermudians have to ask themselves whether they believe this Government can create jobs as the Premier promised, since the Government’s record is “one of continuing job losses,” Shadow Finance Minister Bob Richards said.

Mr Richards said: “Bermudians have to ask themselves whether they really believe this Government can ‘create jobs, thousands of jobs,’ as the Premier promised yesterday.

“The Government’s record over the past decade is one of continuing job losses, not job creation. The Department of Statistics figures show that more than 2,700 Bermudian-held jobs have been lost over the past ten years.

“The number of jobs held by Bermudians declined almost every year from 2001 to 2011 (latest available figures). And the recent Labour Force Survey shows more than 10,000 Bermudians are either unemployed or under-employed. Nearly 40% of young Bermudians don’t have jobs.

“This is a terrible record. Thousands of families are struggling to make ends meet, thousands of Bermudians are suffering grim days every day because they don’t have enough money to pay bills and meet family needs.

“All of this came to pass on this Government’s watch. So why should Bermudians believe this Government will now become a job-creation Government? If it was a job-creation Government, surely thousands of Bermudians would not be struggling today.

“The only promise this Government can keep is that it will give Bermuda more of the same. And more of the same is not what Bermudians want.

“The OBA has put forward a Jobs and Economic Turnaround Plan that will lead Bermuda to better days, growing jobs and opportunity for all. It’s time for change,” concluded Mr Richards.

  1. meanwhile....so so sad says:

Sure they create jobs..they just did so today.

An internal government job posting for ANOTHER PERMENANT Secretary making $179,572 a year.

    Deadline for submission: DECEMBER 12th.

Just in time to usher in another family member to a cozy postion before the ELECTION.

    • SPELL CHECKER says:

If you could spell, you could probably apply for that $180,000 post. But last time I checked, those who could barely get through high school did not warrant that pay grade.

      • Blurt says:

That was mean, attacking the average Bermudian again Mr PLP!!!

  2. jt says:

Imagine what the numbers would be if the civil service had not increased in size by 40%.

  3. Terry says:

    Vote OBA.

    • Oh this is Funny says:

      Vote OBA, Lose your Job.

      • Blurt says:

Please explain, they already said there would not be.

      • Truth (Original) says:

But 10,000 have already lost their jobs under this Government… What we need is MORE business coming here to create MORE jobs for Bermudians.

That doesn’t happen with the PLP anti-expat policy.

        VOTE OBA

      • Argosy says:

        What job?

  4. Gambler says:

Jobs have been created through horticulture course and initiatives the problem is too many of our young have not completed the course and jobs. Look at the Railway Trail Program maybe someone need to look into why Bermudians are not completing they have been given the chance. After Dec 17th somethings will be Looked at I am Sure no matter what party gets in .

    • Sure the PLP are creating jobs – Nails and drywalls. Both are out of work as no-one is here anymore!!!
Don’t believe me take a walk in town – you can walk in the middle of the street without fear of anyone knocking you over.

  5. Navin Johnson says:

    Just keep the pressure on

    • M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

I wonder if you realize that if the UBP would have just kept the pressure on instead of changing their name , they (the UBP) would have handily won this election . However because of the very underhanded way in which the OBA came about you all don’t stand a chance of regaining the Government .

Back to the drawing board for you .

      • street wise says:

@ M.P.M.JP: your spin is making me dizzy! The OBA have nothing to do with the UBP, and you know it. Except that they have a few ex-UBP members… just like the plp who have at least 9 former UBP members, including a former UBP leader. Turncoats all of them!

        So stop yer noise!

The PLP. No talent. No plans. No ideas. No solutions. No money. No jobs. No hope. No future.

        Vote wisely.

        • M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

We all recognize that the New OBA is the bastard child of the Old UBP … Those members who , as you say are turncoats , have aligned themselves with the government of the day rather than the PLP .

If indeed the OBA were to form the next government I’m sure that the aforementioned turncoats will find themselves once again representing the government .

The OBA .Extraordinarily talented . Fantastic plans . Ideas in abundance . Solution based . Backed by extremely wealthy patrons . More jobs than bodies to fill them . Hope that springs eternal . Now the future , I’m not so sure … I don’t think that the OBA has quite convinced a large enough segment of the downscale voters to promise you any sort of future , except maybe as the Official Opposition , AGAIN !!!

Stay Thirsty my Friend , Vote Wisely ..

          • Blurt says:

There a number of old UBP folks in the PLP, so it really is the PLP/UBP.

The OBA were formed only because people could see Bermuda being decimated, their future, their kids future, job losses, crime all happening whilst the PLP twiddled their thumbs or spent excessively on friends and family. Bermuda and Bermudians were promised Public Access to Information PATI by the lady who was and still is in charge of the money. She never delivered on that promise…and still pretends it was nothing to do with her or the PLP….that is very scary.

            • M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

What’s scary is the reason the UBP was abandoned after almost 40yr’s by the people who were entrusted to carry on it’s legacy of inclusivity .

      • Politican says:

So very true. The OBA used the wrong tactics to hoodwink voters. As someone who seriously thought the BDA was on track to bring a better Bermuda to all, I am SO SO betrayed and can not support none of the OBA candidates.

        • navin johnson says:

and who do you vote for Politician?

          • Argosy says:

….obviously he would prefer an unethical individual who had to deceive him and gave all the major Gov’t construction contracts to his non-black mates (wonder why) and refused to remove his shoes at airport security like ordinary folks…..should I go on??

This “politican” is like his PLP counterparts – a dumb joker.

Time to kick them to the curb.

      • Blurt says:

Wow are the PLP still on about this nonsense…nothing to do with the OBA.

It is not a great strategy to base your vote for your future is it! Just as the Marham involvement with the PLP is not a reason to base your future on.

Where is Public Access To Information, why was th Accountant General put on Admin Leave, Where are the mid year financials promised, who are the beneficiaries of the DameLB Evans building trust, has the BLDC PLP candidated returned the money he paid himself, how many Grand Atlantic condos have been sold, why do we need more work on the Dockyard wharf, why wasn’t it built adequate for the ships coming in in 2014. The lists go on and on.

  6. Private Pyle says:

    $179,572! Wow.

  7. Future says:

Everyone Un-employed or under-employed should be “given” government jobs. That is about the only job “creation” vehicle they have. Bleeding the real vehicles of job – that should be VALUE – creation, that is ever increasing using businesses to fund government waste – will have an obvious ending…the math always wins. The best chance any govt. has is to copy other overseas jurisdictions and start “printing” money and “issuing” it….politics is not the answer, it is the problem.

    • street wise says:

Yeah… the best thing the plp could have done was GET OUT OF THE WAY! But, no, they had to meddle in everything that was important to our Island’s survival… and everything they touched turned into doo-doo.

      That is their legacy. Doo-doo.

  8. M3ke says:

Bob, do you really want to be responsible for these people who strive for nothing? They are sitting around waiting for government handouts. Are you going to spoon feed em? Good Luck because you will need all the luck in the world.

  9. When you look at the amount that some government workers are making across the board you have to wonder why it can not be cut to the extreme, you have folk out here would be glad to make $30,000.00 for jobs that don’t require a degree and yes these high paying jobs is for those who have degrees in specific fields but with the salary, perks and other benefits I would like to see a drastic cut.

We are in to serious of a crisis not to make cuts and that goes to the lower scale of government workers, where I believe we need to shorten the work day for many departments in order to reduce government expenditure in payroll and use those savings to help off set our national debt.

Now that speaks to making cuts and I am sure there are more ways then just the two I have mention,I would also like to see government clamp down extra tight with foreign workers that are working here doing jobs Bermudians can do and send them back home and yes pay the employer a portion of the fee that they had to pay to bring them here.

There are to many weak excuses people use to say that Bermudians don’t want to work but if you read today’s Royal Gazette it shows you a woman that has a Masters degree and cant find work here in her own country and she is willing to do whatever she can as long as she is employed.she has a mortgage and risk loosing everything because she cant get employed in her own country.

This is just one out of countless Bermudians in the same position and I am writing this not to take sides with either political party but they better both be paying attention, because regardless who gets in this is in your face.

  10. .am says:

    “doing jobs Bermudians can do”

There are a great deal of jobs that Bermudians CAN do – but won’t – as they feel it is beneath them.

In any case – 179k is absolutely ridiculous. I can’t imagine anyone walking away from that kind of money in this kind of economic climate ..was it a job that needed filling/was previously occupied or was it created with someone in mind?

  11. one eye open says:

we all want jobs i have not seen a thing in any plan that will guarantee jobs, its all pie in the sky talk from both sides. Could someone please tell me what will be the starting salary of the OBA’s good paying jobs.

    • Blurt says:

Read the whole of the OBA economic and jobs plan, not just highlights in the press.

  12. MAAAAAAAN says:

oba lost my vote when i saw how they handled the document….and when i saw how cox handled it..i was embarrassed for craig at the way he stormed out…

    • Rick Rock says:

And you liked the way she handled it? Does it seem true to you? A card-carrying PLP supporter, a consultant for the PLP over a 15-year period, writes a report in 2012 about how to use race, disinformation, and lies to conduct an election campaign.

And she says it’s nothing to do with the PLP. So we’re supposed to believe he wrote it for no-one in particular. This card-carrying PLP supporter and consultant wrote an election strategy, this year, just for his own amusement.

      I see.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

You were just looking for an excuse. Probably never had them under consideration anyway being one who either likes licks or is in the F & F Plan.

    • Blurt says:

Oh come on, he gave fair warning, and then delivered on his promise. If only Cox could deliver on her promises, PATI, mid year financials, promise to protect the finances of the country and not pretend she was a COG in the wheel. She had a duty for which we paid her royally as taxpayers. She has been invisible, hiding from public scrutiny when issues have arisen. She is an embarresment to the PLP and a Liar. What happened to the ministers promised salary cut….OBA have it in their platform as one of the first things they will do when they win.

  13. welldone says:

Bob is running scared. he knows that Tyrrell is gonna oust him this time. Plus he saw how Craig proved he is just not ready to lead a Party much less a country.

    • RFK JFK MLK says:

How much you want to bet Tyrrell WON’T oust him? Have you even seen the boundary changes?

  14. GOD 1st says:

@ well done tyrrell is sure to lose

    • RFK JFK MLK says:

Exactly. Not only did the UBP win #11 last time, but now they’ve added Pampas road and some of the #12 (the biggest stronghold for the opposition on the Island) into #11. Also, because of this, white population has increased significantly since 2007 and black population decreased.

It will be quite an uphill battle for Tyrrell to win.

  15. Pilot001 says:

I think i will stick with PLP. I agree with well done. After Craig walking away from the press conference i just don’t think he’s ready!!

    • Family Man says:

Nobody answers plantation questions anyway right? plp has always shown such impeccable leadership.

  16. MJ says:

The only “Plantation” still in operation is in Martha’s Vinyard.
