Strong Police Presence For New Year’s Holiday
The police will “be out in force tonight to show a strong, highly visible police presence throughout the island during this evening’s festivities,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Weekes said this morning [Dec 31].
Mr Weekes said their intention is to “prevent incidents of antisocial behaviour and public disorder in and around the many parties and functions that are planned.” Police also plan to pay “significant attention” to Bermuda’s roads in an effort to preventimpaired driving.
Mr Weekes full statement follows below:
This year the Christmas Holiday period was marred by the tragic deaths of two young men, one lost through the gun violence that continues to plague our island and one lost on our roads. We wish to again extend our condolences to the families and to thank the public for their support and assistance in the investigation of both these incidents.
I would like to reassure the public that persons are currently in custody in relation to the murder of Mr Augustus and that enquiries are continuing into that incident. We encourage anyone with any information to come forward either to the BPS or to the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline.
The BPS wishes to advise the public that, supported by the Bermuda Reserve Police, will be out in force tonight to show a strong, highly visible police presence throughout the island during this evening’s festivities, our intention being to prevent incidents of antisocial behaviour and public disorder in and around the many parties and functions that are planned.
Significant attention will also be focused on Bermuda’s roads in an effort to prevent and detect offences of impaired driving. We ask the motoring public for their patience when travelling on the roads tonight as there will be road checks set up at various times and places throughout the night designed to keep our roads safer.

We heard the same or similar comments at Halloween and that worked out well for us…NOT! Bottom line is the Police need leadership, the silent commissioner should go or grow some balls and do his job, who is he afraid of? If the BPS was a private company the board of directors would have axed most of them at the top because of bad or negative results so what is the Governor waiting for, maybe the slanted crime stats that gets published keep them in a job. We need a Police service that can actually stop or slow down crime and put an end to the gun violence that is effecting our community and giving us bad press in the international media. You can sugar coat it, slant the figures and complain about the comments but at the end of the day it’s getting worse in Bermuda and we have a very well equipped and badly performing police service and the buck stops with the guys at the top!
No that’s not it. As long as it happens to the have nits and not the haves its cool. As long as it does not spill over into their Rosie lives all is fine. The minute it begins to cross over, then their is a problem. Then you will see the real police. Please don’t mess up our pagan holidays.

No, the PLP (Bean) wanted to go softly on crime. In the 2007 election, when there were anti crime ideas from the UBP, Bean said stuff like ” they want to lock us all up”. He used crime as a political race tool. Here we are 5 years later, and the PLP dud nothing about crime.
I was And still am a proponent of brining in a gang squad from England or the US to break doors and gangs, if you had read any of my previous blogs (clearly you haven’t) you would know that. instead of trying to figure out what kind of person I am, you clearly just grab a blog and type without understanding anyone’s views, the PLP did nothing about anything true but my point , and its very clear, the police in Bermuda have no leadership and should be changed with someone who has the balls to call in (non related) support to deal with these clowns. The blame lies with the reject police they cannot do their job, their leadership is weak and we all are trying to figure out who the commissioner is afraid of.

And where is the police commissioner? Get someone in place with the guts to get in front of cameras and tell the thugs they’re going to lose.

If a higher police presence tonight is what it takes to encourage revelers not to drink and drive and if it saves even one life that’s a success in my book.
This Australian TV ad for not drinking and driving is pretty graphic but really brings home the message that drinking and driving ruins lives, not just the life of the driver but their family’s too.

How can one partake in “antisocial behaviour” while at a party? Wouldn’t it be easier to just stay home and be antisocial?
