49-Year-Old Man Arrested For DUI After Collision
[Updated] This evening [Jan 27] a 49-year-old man was injured in a motorcycle collision in St David’s, and the police later confirmed that he was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.
A police spokesperson said: “Police and first responders attended a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision that took place at 8:28pm on Sunday outside “White’s” Supermarket on South Side Road and Longfield Road in St. David’s.
“The 49 year old man was taken to KEMH where he is being treated for what are believed to be serious head and back injuries. Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen this collision to contact police on 295-0011.”
Update Jan 28, 12.29pm: The police confirmed the man was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. The full police statement follows below.
Around 8:30pm on Sunday, January 27th police and first responders attended a reported serious single vehicle collision at the junction of Southside Road, Longfield Road and Westcott Road in St. George’s.
It appears that a motorcycle was being ridden along Southside Road when a collision occurred as the rider, a 49 year old Devonshire man, attempted to negotiate a round-a-bout at the junction.
The motorcyclist was initially believed to be seriously injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. However, after being medically examined, his injuries were deemed to be less serious.
The Devonshire man was later discharged and arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. The motorcycle was extensively damaged. Inquiries into this collision are ongoing.

Again … seriously, there needs to be some graphic photos shown around the island of injured people (with their consent) and the wrecked bikes and cars out on display to shake people awake to the dangers of driving too fast, drunk, stoned and texting …
It really does not have to be dressed up anymore. If people drive within the law – there are very few accidents. If they do not, pick them up and BOOK THEM.
They are a danger to the rest of us and a waste of money and resources to the EMTs, ER staff and Doctors who have to care for them.
Duh.
This has been done before. Do you recall the accident wreckage that was put on display at the Trimingham Hill Roundabout a few years back?
At this point, there is little to be done except to keep plenty of brooms on hand to clean up the mess. The island has been inundated with road safety messaging and anti-drunk driving education measures for at least twenty years and it seems to have done little.
You cannot stop an individual intent on acting stupidly. They can only stop themselves, and many do not seem to want to do so.
I also meant to say that I hope this person makes a good recovery and IF he was at fault, learns from this. Thanks.
Sometimes these mishaps happen from some form of distraction that can cause misjudgment .
Such as a thought about a bill, a family problem, road misjudgment , looking at some fine women or trying to get out
or use a cell phone.— could have been anything.
The roundabout’s in that area are all to big, they need to be downsized – they did the one just down the hill from here. I have travelled that road many times and always wonder, how do the buses take these things. There have been many accidents on the round-a-bouts and BLDC needs to look or whoever needs to make them smaller.
There you go – drunk. What a waste of resources – does everyone realise that our taxes go towards these guys being treated at the hospital …
There is nothing wrong with the roads or roundabouts, it is the users. I am down this area often – if people drive the speed limit, then the accident rate drops …!
It would be nice if the police did their job and stopped some of these driver before they are laying on the road or the car is bent in half, seems like most of the DUI’s are arrested or charged when they can’t keep moving
The Police can’t be everywhere. Were this the most serious crime issue facing the island then, perhaps, we could blanket it with roadblocks and checkpoints. But, as yesterday’s activities in Somerset showed, it is not.
It is not realistic to expect the Police to stop every crime. They cannot. They can act as a deterrent but a determined criminal or DUI driver will do as they please no matter what.
It is quite plain that residents need to take better care and be mindful of their actions and the consequences that can result. Both on the roads and off. It is up to all of us to behave better!
