Herbert Wins ‘Outstanding Lead Performance’

Bermudian actor Daren Herbert won the ‘Outstanding Lead Performance/Male’ award at the 9th Annual Ovation Awards held on Sunday [Jan 27] at the Vancouver Academy of Music in Canada.

Mr Herbert won the award for his portrayal of Harold Hill in the “Music Man”, besting eight other actors to claim the award.

“The role of the singing, dancing, smooth-talking Hill demands the skill and precision of an athlete, and Daren Herbert pulls it off with virtuosity; his charm and his honeyed voice are irresistible,” said one review.

Another review said, “The Music Man only goes so far as the performance of its titular character. Luckily, Daren Herbert’s version of Harold Hill goes a long, long way.

“It’s hard to play a fast-talking con man without devolving into either shtick or Robert Preston’s original version of the character. But Herbert infuses Hill with his own personality, prowling the stage and charming character after character.”

Primarily based in Canada, Warwick Academy graduate Mr. Herbert juggles theatrical, television and movie work.

He has appeared in such films as the Oscar-winning musical “Dream Girls” and the cult comedy classic “Hot Tub Time Machine”, was cast alongside Reese Witherspoon in a romantic comedy and played a New Jersey detective in the TNT made-for-TV movie “Deck The Halls.”

He has also appeared on stages around the world including Bermuda, Canada, Japan, South Korea and the United States, and in commercials for leading companies including Dodge and Samsung.
