Submit Questions Via Email For Police Town Hall
[Updated] The Bermuda Police Service will host a Town Hall Meeting tomorrow evening [Jan 31], and are inviting the public to submit questions for the panel via email to pmr@bps.bm.
The Town Hall will get underway at 6.30pm at St. Paul’s Centennial Hall on the corner of Court and Victoria Street, with the Police Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and the three Assistant Commissioners on the panel.
A police spokesperson said: “E-mail questions for the panel should be sent to pmr@bps.bm and must be received by 5pm Thursday, January 31st for inclusion in the discussion. Members of the public attending the town hall meeting will also have the opportunity to ask questions on the night.
“The panel will include the Commissioner of Police Mr. Michael DeSilva, the Deputy Commissioner Mr. Mike Jackman and the three Assistant Commissioners – Mr. Paul Wright, Mr. Antoine Daniels and Mr. David Mirfield.
“The Commissioner’s Town Hall Meeting will take place on Thursday, January 31st at 6:30pm in St. Paul’s Centennial Hall at the corner of Court & Victoria Street, Pembroke.”
Can you submit questions on the night?
Yes you can. The Town Hall will be a traditional format where the audience can ask questions, the police were just offering email as an additional option…
My suggestion submitted to the BPS is to:
1. offer an amnesty for surrender of firearms up to March 31, 2013
2. request that the OBA government implement legislation which
gives a mandatory (GO straight to jail card) for 20 years for
possession of a firearm
We cannot accept / tolerate what is going on in our community. There are ways to deter this kind of behaviour and that is through strict new laws. Let’s do it before a child or some other person is caught in this crossfire!!!!!
Kathy – I like these two ideas. Seems reasonable and justification. Give anyone anyone with a firearm or anyone that knows someone with a firearm the opportunity to turn it in by a certain date…no questions asked. After that, the 20 year rule (law) should be in place for those in possession and/or use a firearm.
Your idea is good as far as what has been said but the truth is we already have it on the books for what the maditory sentences are for possession of fire arms.
The problem is not the law being on the books,it is enforcing what is already on the books, our court system is not throwing the book at these guys and that is the real issue, along with the no parole.
Life in prison was once 15 years according to the law and just a few years ago we had that ammended, along with the length of time that can be given for just possesion of a weapon and needless to say we are seeing only cases of murder with a weapon but not just plain possesion of a weapon without it being connected to a murder or shooting,so just possession is not something the police is catching, yesterdays arrest and find is very rare to wherwe you find ammunittion in a bust, but I think it should be an automatic 20 years just for being found with the ammunittion.
Then the outcry would be now that you have to prove whose ammunittion it is,because if it is in your house and no one is taking responsibility of it,then the home owner can be prosecuted for it,now can you see the out cry some old lady being locked up for possession of ammunition because the grandchild had it in their house un-be known to them,so it is not as easy as it sounds.
WHY CANT I STAND UP AND ASK A QUESTION WAT R THEY AFRAID OF????????????SOUNDS LIKE SOME BS TALK SHOW ON TV ARRANGED SO THAT THE GUEST ARE NOT MADE TO LOOK LIKE AS$#@@$!!!!!!!!!!BPS NEED TO %$#@ OFF &^%$ ON OUR STREETS DAY TO DAY IS REAL!!!!!WHY CALL IT A TOWNHALL MEETING……
If you go to the event, I’m 100% sure there will be a ‘live’ Q+A session with some previously submitted questions being asked also.
Relax yourself and go, then if you still think the way you think, find the ‘Caps Lock’ key on your computer, press it and then type a reasonable critique of what you experienced.
It’s called a ‘townhall meeting’ because that’s the correct name for it.

Really…is all that necessary…try reading the article…
“Members of the public attending the town hall meeting will also have the opportunity to ask questions on the night.”
Great suggestions. I would add that we should also be giving time for ammunition in addition to this. For each bullet you are in possession of, you should receive at least 3 to 5 years for it. This should run consecutively, with no chance of parole.
More talk while Satans soldiers plot…SMH
@Kathy, I second your notion.
There needs to be fear installed on these Satan soldiers.
BPS and Gov have given us fear for things like not using your seat belt and using a hand held device while riding or driving…but no fear of shooting someone or using a firearm….SMH
hard labor…chain gang….making prisoners speak to youths, letting them know gangster life is a dead end….embarassment for sexual preditors…etc
WE HAVE ALWAYS ASKED FOR MORE JAIL TIME THRU THE YEARS IF PPL WOULD PAY ATTENTION COURTS HAVE INCREASED PENALTYS FOR MANY CRIMES BUT HAS THAT STOPPED THE CRIMES FROM HAPPENING!!!!!???????NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!SO THAT SHOWS U WE HAVE TO GET A DIFFERENT APPROACH LIKE ENFORCEING THE MANY MANY MANY LAWS ON THE BOOKS ALREADY!!!!!!!!!
This is a good initative and as many as possible you get involved, they have given us a email address above to submit our questions, comments or solutions and this way you do not have to go in person to be seen but you will be heard by your email.
I would also think that they would keep the names of those that choose to send in emails private, where they would discuss the contents without revealing the identity of the individual who sent it in,so I can respect that person who does not want their name involved, that is their right.for those who can attend and go in person and not afraid to be heard, then do so and bring solutions with you.
The thing I would applaud is the authorities understand tha we can not do this without them and they cant do this without us,this is for our Island home and our future generations,so Bermuda do your part in making this a better place for all of us.my only prayer is that the Bermuda Police Service will work hand and hand with those who have and are willing to be a part of the solutions, town hall meetings are not just for venting frustrations but to walk away with a fresh look at possitive initatives for possitve out comes.
WHEN are you going to re open St.Georges Police Station 24/7.
@ Bernews, it would be a good idea seeing that you have a large fan base to ask your readers if they have questions for the Commissioner to email them to you or leave the questions under this article for you or your representative to ask as I feel some people have hard questions that the police media may not wish to ask.
some of you people are very naive to think that the police will be completely open and honest with members of the public. I think this so called town hall meeting is a waist of time and energy. The police are being paid a lot of money and the Commissioner of being paid an outrageous amount of money and for what to hold town hall meetings. He needs to step aside and let Colin Coxal come back and take over.
Right on, lets get someone in there that will actually do the job they are being paid for, the silent commissioner is afraid of the big bad wolf
If anyone is going, ask them why police are allowed to park in loading zones and on double yellow lines on Victoria Street all day every day
Bernews;
It is clear that Y-gurl has a personal agenda against the police because she never has anything good to say about the organization and the police commissioner. I think it is important that we have freedom of speech but, what she does amounts to cyber heckling.
I am not a cop or even pro police but what she does is so transparent.
clearly she is a former cop
wronged by a Cop
or dated/married to a COP
but her comments are always negative
remember even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Thanks for your comment however it may be better to address it to “Y Gurl”, as her comments represent her opinion.
We block extreme attacks on the police, but she commented on their job performance and parking habits, and to be honest there is no chance of us censoring people from discussing those two topics.
If you feel differently than she does, great, express your views – that’s what the comments are for, to allow all sides to be heard
Are you taking email questions for the town hall meeting?
You can email them directly to the police at pmr@bps.bm
