Women’s Hockey: Budgies Defeat Cardinals
This past weekend saw Cardinals’ first time playing Budgies 2 and went out with 10 on the team sheet. Seconds before the game started, Katrina Flath had pulled her left ‘quad’ muscle, but not to disappoint her teammates decided to go ahead and play. Surprisingly, this game would be quite even.
Cardinals’ Iesha Castle drove the ball up the field and into the circle to strike at goal, but her wide shot would find Pier Simons on the left post to put Cardinals ahead in the 5th minute.
Both teams were playing extremely well, transitioning the ball around the field and creating several set plays, but the result remained 1-0 to Cardinals in the first half. This same effort continued by both teams into the second half, but Budgies’ Jane Lau caught a sleepy ‘keeper’ in the 44th minute for the equalizer of 1-1 from a penalty corner.
Katrina Flath who was ‘stationed’ in the ‘D’ managed to hobble along to put the Cardinals back in front in the 58th minute by slipping the ball through the ‘keeper’s’ legs from a ball that fell into her path off the ‘keeper’s’ pads from a ‘broken down’ penalty corner.
Several shots at Cardinals’ ‘keeper’ were saved, but Budgies’ Alex Francis managed to beat Cardinals’ last defender in the 60th minute to slip a curved ball around Cardinals’ ‘keeper’ to tie the score of 2-2 from a field goal. Continued pressure was added by both teams, but with the lack of legs by Cardinals, Budgies’ Lau would secure the winner of 3-2 from a field goal in the 65th minute.
Great job Cardinals!!!
