Man Jailed For Threatening To Kill Ex-Girlfriend

February 6, 2013

Following his earlier plea of guilty to threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend — by sending letters through their 4-year-old son — Sahkai Kenyatta Weeks, 34, was this morning [Feb 6] sentenced to two years in prison by Supreme Court Justice Charles-Etta Simmons.

This was to be followed by three years on probation, and the seven months already spent in custody were to be taken into consideration.

Crown Counsel had recommended a sentence between two and a half and four years. Defence lawyer Lee Holder argued for mitigation on the grounds that Weeks had suffered a traumatic head injury, had low self-control, was clearly in need of psychiatric support, and that in tests taken so far, the vast majority of Weeks’ peers had scored higher than him.

Speaking from the dock, Weeks said that as soon as he was released, he planned to get out of Bermuda and move to England where he would be free.

Weeks had pleaded guilty to writing and sending the letters, each threatening to kill his son’s mother. Weeks had placed the letters in his son’s backpack and told the little boy to give the letters to his mother.

These actions had occurred in May 2012, in the three week period immediately following Weeks’ release from Westgate Correctional Facility where he had been incarcerated for another offence. Weeks’ criminal record extends back over the past few years.

Police arrested Weeks in June 2012 and he has been in custody ever since.

In handing down today’s decision, Justice Simmons set these special conditions for Week’s three years of Probation which was to commence immediately after his release from prison:

  • He was to avoid all contact with the victim and her son [also Weeks’ son]. He was never to come within ‘shouting distance’ of the residence, place of employment, or the school of the mother or his son. Justice Simmons explained further that this meant that he was to stay at least 100 yards away.
  • He was to wear an Electronic Monitoring Device which, for the first six months after his release, was to have him under home curfew from 9:00pm until 6:00am daily.
  • He was to refrain from using alcohol or any illegal drug or substance; submit to any drug tests as ordered by a Probation Officer [PO]; and enroll in any rehabilitative programs designated by his PO.
  • He was to notify his PO of any change of address and must not leave Bermuda without the written permission of his PO; and he must obey all lawful instructions given to him by his PO.
  • He must not commit any further offences for the whole period of this probation order

Weeks said that as soon as he was released, he planned to get out of Bermuda and move to England where he would be free.

Free to start his dysfunctional cycle elsewhere, I guess is what he means.
The help you really need cannot be erased because you hop on a Plane and travel at 500mph away from here. Take a look in the Airplane bathroom mirror, and you will find where the “real” issues lie.

He wont be able to go to England when he is released without permission from the Authorities and if and when he does go to England,he will be in for a rude awakening out there in more ways than one, there are guys out there that would soon deal with him if he attacked or threatened someone’s sister…he’d be screaming to be sent back here.

  2. Been there says:

Isn’t this the brother of the other Weeks who was recently convicted of threatening and physically abusing his girlfriend? This branch of the Weeks family has serious problems with the law, with drugs, and with women. Him going to England isn’t going to make a difference. He already has another family member out there being the same scofflaw he was here.

Mind you he has gone sideways no problem with the verdict for those about to blast me…

    • tricks are for kids says:

@dinosaurmedia if you are firm in your belief than you should not care what others think of your opinion….

With that said, Yes it’s true that he may have “gone sideways” as you’ve put it but if you look at the sentence that he recived in comparisson with some of the crimes mentioned above and the sentences that they received, his sentence would make you shake your head and say, “things that make you go hmmmmmmmm”…..

There are no set rules (as aparent by sentences metted out)and I’m sorry no one can convince me that Judges do not sentence according to how they feel that day…..IJS

  7. Really??? says:

MMmmmm, you must look at the judge on each case and you will see a pattern of crap sentences. Also it depends on how they feel when they wake up that morning. SMH

  8. fed up says:

The sentences seen to be inconsistent some are first time offenders and others like the Week’s brothers are repeat offenders that’s why their sentences are seen to be harder then the others.

  9. CYBIAN says:
