Lane Closed: Part Of Angle St. Wall Collapses
[Updated] The City of Hamilton today [Apr 1] advised that due to a wall collapse, Angle Street, between Cedar Avenue and Brunswick Street, has been reduced to one lane for traffic traveling westbound.
A spokesperson said, “The eastbound lane will remain closed until further notice. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to use extreme caution in the area. The City apologizes for any inconvenience caused.”
Update 6.48pm: The Bermuda Police Service said they are “advising the public that a section of the wall has fallen down in the area Dellwood Middle School on the corner Angle Street and Cedar Avenue adjacent to the BPSU Headquarters.
“There will be major traffic delays in that area and we are asking for the public to proceed with caution.”

Isn’t that the property the COH purchased just before the last COH Elections?
Nope.
Looks like the wall across from BPSU. Its fallen into Dellwood School Property.
There has been work taking place on the sidewalk there for a little while now.
Fortunatly school was out this week. I don’t even want to think about what could have gone wrong if young children were playing there. @Dude, you are correct, there has been lots of work going on that sidewalk over the last little while. Don’t know if it played any part or if is just coincidence,
Fortunately that is not a designated play area…some teachers park there however……so yes….. so glad that school is out. ..
What’s with walls collapsing all of a sudden???
So that’s the city’s property? Don’t they have surveyors and engineers that should be actually checking for weak spots in walls/embankments and roadways?
Astonishing how these things happen completely unexpectantly.
Maybe if the C of H “engineers” knew what they were looking at this type of unnecessary chaos wouldn’t happen.
@Micro – It is most unfair to blame the City’s engineers or surveyors (do they have surveyors) for this collapsed wall. Surely it is on Department of Education property and it is their responsibility to make sure that children attending Dellwood School are safe.
Just yesterday I was driving up Bakery Lane and noticed the wall bordering The Garden Market parking lot and Bakery Lane has seperated and is leaning dangerously towards the road. It is at least 10 (maybe 15) degrees off from being plum and doesn’t appear to have anything holding it to the foundation. I’m not saying it does not, I’m say it appears to not have anything keeping it from falling. You can actually see a fair amount of light passing thru where it should meet the wall when driving up from Beruda Lumber.
If someone in that upper parking lot mistakingly reverses a bit to far while parking and just bumps that wall from above, Im afraid that it may fall and kill someone. With the amount of traffic on that road always backed up and trying to get onto Serpentine Road it will likely hurt more than one person.
Who should be contacted about this . I believe it is outside COH area?
After the life tha was lost at Bermuda College years ago when the bank collapsed and now this at Dellwood I feel that someone needs to be contacted before we have another trajedy.
Wrong. The wall fell onto the Department of Eudcations property. Therefore the owner of the wall is liable(COH). If you lived next door to a person who had a wall and it fell onto your property, whos fault is it? Yours for building your house there, or your neighbors? This is the reason the area on Dellwood property has since been baracaded off with COH material.
I’m not so sure that “In the know” is in the know! There are walls almost completely surrounding Dellwood School, and I seriously doubt that they are the responsibility of the COH. I seem to recall there is also a walled entrance leading directly into the school grounds from near to where the wall collapsed and has probably been there since the school property was private property. Is this also the responsibility of the COH? Is the COH responsible for the wall on Cedar Avenue surrounding the nearby MSA grounds. I doubt it.
Yes, the area surrounding the collapsed wall has been barracaded off using COH cones and barriers but surely they are responsible for the safety of traffic using the sidewalk and street.
Perhaps we should wait to see who carries out the wall repairs. If it’s done by the COH then the wall must be on COH property, but if it is repaired by Works and Engineering we will know that it belongs to the owners of Dellwood School.
There is no vehicular access to Par-La-Ville Parking Lot from Queen St!!! LOL!
It seems in the past few months we have had an inordinate amount of rain. For us, rain is usually a good thing. But when it reaches the point where wall foundations erode from the excess moisture, they will eventually collapse.
There a lots of places around the island where walls are in a state of imminent collapse. Some are on private property, some in public areas.
Often, the erosion is obvious, and preventive maintenance can be implemented to avoid a potential disaster. But sometimes we have no idea of the state and the integrity of a walls foundation.
Maybe Works and Engineering should do a major survey of all public walls and take immediate remedial action with respect to those walls which show obvious foundation erosion.
