Shetland Bringing 40 Athletes For Island Games
The Shetland Islands will be bringing 40 athletes for the 2013 Island Games in July, with their team chairman saying that Bermuda has travelled to the games held in Europe for the last 10 years and “it is only right that we cross the Atlantic as their guests this year.”
The Shetland Times reports that Shetland will be represented by a squad of 40 athletes competing in eight different sports at this year’s Island Games.
The Shetland Island Games Association [SIGA] said it will be sending a much smaller squad due to the high travel costs involved in crossing the Atlantic.
SIGA chairman Andrew Inkster said some sports, especially those with younger competitors, had put a great effort into fundraising, including sponsorship, coffee mornings, raffles and car washes.
“The Bermuda team have travelled to the games held in Europe for the last 10 years and it is only right that we cross the Atlantic as their guests this year,” Mr Inkster told the Shetland Times.
The swimming team accounts for a sizeable proportion of the overall squad, consisting of a dozen swimmers, two coaches and a manager. Half a dozen squash players, a quartet of golfers, five triathletes, two shooters and a sailor will also make the trip.
Kudos to Shetland Islands, this is what we call Team Spirit, supporting one another through goodwill games.
