Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre stressed the need for boaters to check that all appropriate safety gear is on board and in good working order after a 16ft Boston Whaler with three people on board experienced engine failure on Saturday [May 18].

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “On Saturday 18th May at approximately 4.00am a 911 call was received from the skipper of a 16ft Boston Whaler reporting engine failure and drifting due to lost anchor just east of Northeast Breaker Beacon.

“The boat had three people on board. The crew managed to slow the drift by deploying a weighted fishing line. The pilot boat St David was tasked and recovered the whaler approximately one mile east of the Beacon.

“Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre stresses the need to check that all appropriate safety gear is on board and in good working order, and that fuel level checks are made before setting off.”
