2013 BMDS Playwriting Festival Finalists
The Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society [BMDS] will be holding its 11th annual playwriting festival, “Famous For Fifteen Minutes”, next month spotlighting six original works by local authors.
The festival runs from June 13-15 and June 19-22. Showtime is 8 p.m. A total of 25 Bermuda writers submitted one-act, 15-minute plays to the 2013 festival.
The six plays selected represent a varied array of up-and-coming and veteran talent.
Three plays by first-time entrants will be staged by BMDS during the festival along with three by repeat entrants — one of whom is a three-time winner of the festival’s Golden Inkwell Award.
This year’s directors are Sara Kelly, Deborah Smith-Joell, Jym Brier, Chris Edwards, Adam Gauntlett and Jenn Osmond.
The winner will be announced by the special guest judge on the closing gala night.
The proceeds of the gala night go towards the BMDS Charitable Trust which provides scholarships to students pursuing studies in the arts.
The plays and writers are as follows:
- “Banana” by Adam Gauntlett
- “Fifty Shades of Beige” by Justin Foster
- “We Wish You The Best in Your Future Endeavors” by Owain Johnston
- “It’s Not the End of the World, Hannah” by Liz Jones
- “NACAD” by Catherine Hay
- “Pecan Pie” by Helen Jardine
This years guest judge is American playwright Pia Wilson [pictured at top].
Ms Wilson is a 2011 Heideman Award finalist for her short play, “Turning The Glass Around.”
Her play, “Generation T”, was featured in The Classical Theatre of Harlem`s Future Classics reading series in June, 2012 along with her full length drama, “Red Rooster”.
“BMDS is honoured to have her as this years judge,” said a spokesman. “When choosing the winner she will base her decision purely on the quality of the writing and will have given the winner’s name in a sealed envelope to the producers before she gets to watch any performances.”
Tickets — at $25 each — will be available online at bmds.bm from May 24 to June 22
They can also be purchased from June 6-7 and 10-12 at the Daylesford Theatre on Washington Street between Dundonald Street and Park Road from 5.30 – 6.30 pm
Any remaining tickets will be for sale at Daylesford one hour before the performances on show nights.
