Taxi Crashes, Overturns, Lands Close To Water

May 8, 2013

[Updated] There was a collision today [May 8] which saw a taxi land upside down only a few yards away from the water in Southampton, and second collision happened a short while later when a fire service vehicle responding to the crashed taxi collided with two other vehicles.

The first collision involved a taxi overturning in Southampton in the Jew’s Bays area. It crashed through a hedge and part of a railing before landing upside down close to the water’s edge on what appears to be a residential property.

The second collision occurred at the junction of Burnt House Hill and Middle Road in Warwick, and appeared to have involved three vehicles. One was a fire service vehicle which ended up partially in a hedge, a private car was also involved and it also looked like a motorcycle may have been involved.

The slideshow below contains photos of both collisions, click to move to next slide:

Further details are limited this time, however we will update with official information as able.

Update 2.15pm: The taxi has been removed, additional photos of it have been added to the slideshow above. Unofficial reports indicate that no one was injured in the taxi collision.

Update 5.40pm: The police confirmed that no one was injured in either collision, and also confirmed that the collision involving the fire service vehicle occurred when it was responding to overturned taxi crash. The full police statement follows below.

Single Vehicle Damage Only Collision in Southampton

Around 11:55am on Wednesday, May 8th police officers attended a reported single vehicle collision along Middle Road in Southampton in the vicinity of Jew’s Bay.

It appears that a taxi was being driven along Middle Road when the driver collided with a roadside wall. The taxi then went down an embankment into the yard of a waterside property.

The taxi was extensively damaged. A section of the property was also damaged. However, there were no reported injuries.

Three Vehicle Damage Only Collision in Warwick

Around 12:15pm on Wednesday, May 8th police officers attended a reported three vehicle damage only collision at the junction of Middle Road and Burnt House Hill in Warwick involving a Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service vehicle, a car and a motorcycle.

Details regarding how the collision occurred are unclear at this time; however it appears that the emergency service vehicle was responding to the earlier collision near Jew’s Bay at the time. Apparently all three vehicles were damaged; however, there were no reported injuries.

  1. Bob says:

Almost became another water taxi.. Hope no one was injured.

    • SoMuchMore says:

i guess they’ve said the other guy needs a second boat so i guess the driver said let me turn my taxi into a water taxi rofl. but seriously i am glad the driver is safe and no one was injured.

      • Family Man says:

That’s what happens when you rely on GPS. The water taxi dock was the NEXT turn.

  2. Ty says:

Hope no one was injured in the taxi collision. That looks like quite a drop from the edge down to the water. This is one where they should be glad the tree was there. Could have been much worse. As stated earlier, I hope there were no serious injuries.

    • Hudson says:

You’re righ Ty – we need to stop cutting down the trees! They are our “safety net” in more ways than one :-)

  3. Loquatz says:

I saw a similar accident near Whale Bay on Saturday afternoon – a taxi that seems to have catapaulted into someone’s lawn. I can only wonder what speed these vehicles were travelling.

    • Easy Dayz says:

Well I can only imagine the accident that happened on Saturday she couldn’t have been speeding as it happened when everyone was leaving Dockyard that late afternoon/evening. But to this character I declare “License Revoked” as that is pretty weird being its an open stretch of road unless…… the cars where parked on the other side of the road and someone wasn’t in the right away.

  4. The Ombudsman makes a statement and says:

he hears about the new water taxi business and decides that.. hey!!! I will become Bermudas first AIR-N-LAND-N-WATER TAXI WITH A PERMIT TO DO DEMOLITION WORK…genius

  5. DOH says:

    @Bob – GENIUS!

  6. Nicholas Scaife says:

I’m getting tired of these drivers destroying people’s property on a daily basis! People WORK HARD for their homes and then to have these careless drivers barrel through their homes knocking down walls and destroying PRIVATE PROPERTY. I had a car end up in my trees on Friday and the Police have yet to call me and tell me who is at fault. Two more feet and they would have needed a crane to get the car out of my house. The Police have my phone numbers and were leaving the scene when I arrived at my house. They said someone will be in touch. Well, tomorrow is Thursday and nadda…not one phone call. Slow down Bermuda! If this happens again I will be outside with a bat doing some demolishing of my own! Believe me!!!!

    • SNS says:

Don’t hold your breath! I’m still waiting to hear from the police about a hit and run I was involved in 2 years ago!

    • i KNOW JUST WHAT YOU MEAN, THE PERSON WHO DONE THE DAMAGE IS SUPPOSE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THE DAMAGE PROPERTY, & I AM GOING TO LET YOU KNOW THE TRUTH NOW, THE POLICE DONT GIVE A S#$T. BUT LET IT BE THIER PROPERTY BET YOUR ASS THEY WILL MAKE SURE THAT PERSON FIX’S IT, SOME CAN-SOME CANT- & SOME BETTER NOT.

  7. edwin says:

Thanks to all concerned but the driver was not hurt just a bit shaken, and he was not speeding.

    • Caffeine free says:

Really glad to hear that edwin, that must have been one heck of a shock for him though.

Ignore the haters – there’s always one (or ten!)

      • SoMuchMore says:

lmao, there’s always one (or ten!) hilarious

  8. crazy stuff for sure! says:

I would agree with Nicolas, it’s unfair these car drivers crashing into peoples property and causing damage! The police don’t need to be hiding out catching people for speeding. They just need to write up and the courts severely penalize those persons causing these crazy accidents.

    • Chuckling says:

Do you know the details of how this occurred? Or you already have the whole incident summed up in your mind.

      • crazy stuff for sure! says:

The problem is there are so many of these sorts of crashes! For those who don’t have such accidents it’s very unfair and selfish. Everyone ends up with increased insurance rates and suffers from increased presence by the police.

If people aren’t speeding and are having such accidents, you do have to question their ability to drive and whether they should even be on the road in the first place! Of course it’s possible the cause of the accident was out of the drivers hands, but was it really?

  9. Tricks are for Kids says:

Glad to hear that the driver of the taxi is okay….As the article does not specify the cause of the accident I am not going to ASSume otherwise as some have done. However, what I do know is that not ALL accidents are caused by speed…..The driver could have passed out, the brakes could have failed, etc…..Again I say I am glad that the driver is okay as a life can’t be replaced unlike a hedge or wall etc. that can be replaced…..

    • Truth is killin' me... says:

Replaced by who Tricks!? Some of these as#es causing the accidents don’t even have insurance on their cars and then you have take them to civil court and have to wait years to get a penny out of them!!! Some of these walls these people are taking out cost thousands of dollars to replace dreamer!!!!!!

      • tricks are for kids.... says:

@ Truth…. so you have to result to name calling (dreamer) to get your opinion across…really? You are entitled to your opinion just as I am entitled to mine…apologies in advance if we don’t agree…… I just feel that a life is of more value than materialistic things……

  10. Y-Gurl says:

Damn GPS Turn left turn left……you have reached your destination!

  11. Watching says:

I am glad no kids were in that yard

    • SoMuchMore says:

Kids would have been like look its a bird, no a plane… wait its a freakin flying taxi runnnnnnnnnnnn Forrest runnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  12. smh says:

People don’t pull over any more when emergency vehicles are on the road. PAY ATTENTION BERMUDA! BE COURTEOUS! It takes only seconds to move over and let the emergency vehicles pass. Seconds count!

    • Easy Dayz says:

You also have to keep in mind that the emergency vehicles come speeding through traffic with no siren on coming around blind corners. So unless the unlucky person on the other side of the road can read minds or see around the corner before they get there then who is at fault??? I have seen it to many times were as emergency vehicles have almost caused accident in which resulted in people stopping short unaware of what was coming.

      • Y-Gurl says:

Agreed, some of the worst drivers on our roads wear uniforms

  13. Triangle Drifter says:

Surely the crash investigators can calculate a good estimate of speed needed to crash through a wall then land, upside down, that distance from the road.

There must be witnesses who saw the taxi moments before impact.

Where is a camera when you need one?

  14. superman says:

Thank the lord that the driver of the taxi is ok. I just would like to know how did he get out b4 the impact he had to do some superman type stunt cos that taxi is demolished. Brave one!

  15. Adele says:

Wow! This could have turned out a lot worse! Glad everyone is okay!

  16. Bling says:

Was the driver asked for a breath sample for his efforts??? Maybe it was those ferry boat performance drinks again!!!!

  17. ( '-' ) says:

Must ba a bad week for taxi drivers, maybe the dock yard situation is affecting their driving because another taxi went through the trees near Granaway Heights in Southampton this same week

  18. Bill says:

Mr. Rockfish and Mrs. Snapper must have requested transportation to the Aquarium… Oh well, glad no serious injury resulted……
