Three Males Granted Conditional Discharges
Three males, aged 16-20, were each granted conditional discharges in Magistrates Court yesterday [Apr 30] after being convicted of unlawfully possessing objects including knives and a baseball bat.
Two 16-year-old schoolboys Kenwell Pearman and Malik Wilson had each pleaded guilty to charges involving the possession of a bladed article and an offensive weapon. At the time that they were stopped, both teens told Police that they had the items for their personal protection.
Following their guilty plea the Senior Magistrate had ordered a Social Inquiry Report [SIR], which the Court heard did not indicate the two teens would re-offend.
Rev Tweed, Pastor at the St Paul’s AME Church, said he has known Wilson since he was a baby. He told the Senior Magistrate that the boys were guilty more of “bad judgment and stupidity” and that his Church stood ready to offer its services to the teens.
Both of the defendants mothers were in Court for both appearances, and while acknowledging their sons actions, said they would like to see them be given a second chance.
On handing down the discharges, Magistrate Warner said that the teens should not look at this as an easy out. As well as a requirement to be drug-tested and engage in other directed programs, the Magistrate set curfews for both teens, and required that the two teens should have no contact with each other for the duration of the conditional discharge period.
In the third case, the Magistrate ordered a conditional discharge for 20-year-old Lavonte Williams who had pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article. Williams had said the item was for work purposes.

Good to see the boys are getting a second chance, I hope the heed the opportunity given to them. Mind you, I think that community service should be into any conditional discharge involving youths.
Youths become adults… I’m certain they’d be doing the exact same things. Why on earth would 16 year old boys need “protection” from?
Protection: A person or thing that prevents someone or something from suffering harm or injury.
You’re welcome.
Oh please! Is it any surprise that Bermuda is in the state it is? Murders, robberies, why are we all surprised? Here we have a case of 3 males getting off a mandatory sentence for possession a bladed article. Good thing the court system is conditioning people to getting off breaking the law.
What kind of party are these kids going too that they need ‘protection’? Who are the people that they hang out with that they feel they need ‘protection’? Where are the parents in all this? Is it normal for these kids to go to parties where ‘protection’ is needed? These are the sort of questions that need to be asked, and need an answer. Maybe the time has come to hold parents accountable for their childrens’ actions.
We have laws in place, created by individuals elected by the people. Who does Archie Warner think he is to think that he can go against the will of the people? Warner is simply a man, put in place to do a job. SO DO YOUR JOB!!!! If you cannot implement the laws as they are made, then it is time for you to move on. Leave us and let us put in place someone who will act in accordance with the will of the people of Bermuda and its laws.
Yup. I disagree with blaming the parent’s tho.
Read a book, any book and then come back and comment. The primary purpose of the legal system is NOT to incarcerate people.
And you wonder why the island is in the state it’s in!!!
I understand how you all above must feel however Ive crossed the path of one these kids and he is generally a great kid! Likes to volunteer does Ok in school not usually. Problem to anyone quite quiet. What you don’t understand is that they probably in fear because these little idiots are threatening other kids who are not involved. Taking there belongings beating them up and harrasing them for no reason but to be a bully. I feel sorry for our young males.its tough out there always under threat by their own peers. It’s real!!! Those Are the ones that we need to lock up!
“Both of the defendants mothers were in Court for both appearances, and while acknowledging their sons actions, said they would like to see them be given a second chance.”
Where are the fathers? That’s why this is going on!
Blah blah “they are great kids” , “they do really well in school” , “he was such a good boy”. Wake up parents!(and two work better than one. Fact). I’m taking bets that these kids end up on the wrong side of the law again. I’m hoping they don’t but it just seems so commonplace nowadays. To the parents of these children, bust your kids a#s. Then bust their a#s again. Ground them. Give them a curfew. They re obviously hanging out with the wrong type of friend or in the wrong social circle.
