Bermuda’s Youth Support Hospital Campaign
Bermuda’s young people have begun to answer the call to support the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust’s [BHCT] Why it Matters campaign. To date, BHCT said that approximately $3,000 has been raised through both individual initiative and school activities.
The idea to add a youth component to the Why it Matters campaign was led by students involved in the 2012 Summer Internship Program. As a result the Youth Advisory Committee was formed and school presentations, in coordination with the Healthy Schools Programme, have helped youth recognize the significance of this project. Through their ideas, support and contributions young people have nurtured numerous fundraising events with proceeds going to help build a new acute care hospital facility for our island.
Some schools hosted a Why it Matters denim day: Prospect Primary raising $696, East End Primary raising $310, Heron Bay Primary raising $244 along with School House Nursery and RHM School House both raising $70. Berkeley Institute held a student grub/fun day raising $1,875.
This event was initiated by BHCT’s Youth Committee Member and fellow Berkeley Student Jazmine Cann. Southampton Preschool participated in the Why it Matters coin drive, collecting 37 boxes of coins for a total donation of $143.72. Students then wrote why the hospital matters to them as part of the project.
Laura Lyons, Community Developer Officer at BHCT, says, “We are grateful to Bermuda’s youth who have risen to the occasion and shown outstanding initiative on behalf of the Why it Matters campaign and its goals. As this school year comes to a close, we wanted to acknowledge the contributions these young people and their schools have made as well as encourage everyone to follow their lead. We look forward to working closely with more schools after the summer break. Applications are still available for those interested in becoming a Youth Committee Member, which is a great way to propose great fundraising ideas and become an important youth representative of BHCT. ”
Not all schools have had the opportunity to support our efforts this school year; however, plans are underway for additional participation in the upcoming school year. Youth Committee Members Russell Conyers from Warwick Academy and Bryanna Furtado from Mount Saint Agnes have set goals to engage their schools in the first term of the 2013/14 school year. There is still time and plenty of exciting youth fundraising ideas available for Bermuda’s youth to get involved. Organize a group fundraiser day at school or seek pledges for a walkathon, jump-athon or bake-a-thon. Pick up a coin box and make an effort to set aside money on a regular basis or sit down as a family to talk about ways to make a family gift.
The Why it Matters campaign has a goal of raising $40 million in support the KEMH Redevelopment Project. For more information please contact the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust at 295-2428 or visit here.
