Club Extends Condolences, Suspends Parties
The Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club has suspended the Tuesday night “Dreamteam” events, are reviewing their security measures, and said they join in with the Bailey’s Bay/Hamilton Parish community in “grieving the loss of one of its young sons with all love and respect.”
At around 1.20am yesterday morning [June 26], 21-year-old Verneil Richardson was fatally stabbed in the parking lot of the Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club.
Later that day, the police named Adam King as a “person of interest” during a press conference. Just before he was publicly named, Mr King turned himself in at Hamilton Police Station, where he was arrested.
At yesterday’s press conference , Police Superintendent James Howard said: “We do not believe that the incident that took place has any reflection on the Club itself, or the business that is actually here.”
A statement from the Club said, “With respect to an incident that occurred on June 26th on or around 1:26 a.m. resulting in a fatal stabbing of Verneil Richardson, the executive management, staff, members and friends of the Bailey’s bay cricket club wish to express their heartfelt condolences to the family of Verneil.
“It is important that the community understand that such behavior and acts of violence are in no way tolerated by our organization. We wish to assure our patrons, guest and members that all reasonable steps have been instituted to prevent and deter any such acts upon Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club grounds.
“Such steps have included the installation of CCTV cameras, positioned throughout the interior and affixed to the exterior of the club, security personal during all events, and additionally policies which have been implemented to deal with any individual who should cause disturbance, breach club rules and generally commit a breach of the peace.
“Sanctions resulting from these policies include suspension, expulsion of members and notification to the Bermuda Police Service to prohibit entry on to the club premises for worst offenders. While no policy or security measures so implemented are capable of recovering the lost of Verneil, we wish to inform the public that every effort has been taken to ward off any such acts or behavior from occurring.
“We welcome any suggestions or recommendations from the general public with a view towards improving club security at any time and we wish to assure the general public that we are actively reviewing our existing policies and measures with a view towards improving as best as we humanly can.
“The usual Dreamteam Tuesday functions will be suspended pending further notice and we join in with the Bailey’s Bay/Hamilton Parish community as we grieve the loss of one of its young sons with all love and respect,” concluded the statement from the Club.
Yesterday Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro said, “I am appealing for anyone that saw this incident or can provide information that can assist in identifying and bringing the offender or offenders to justice, to contact detectives from the Serious Crime Unit.
“The Serious Crime Unit can be contacted on 247-1739 & 247-1340. Alternatively anyone with information regarding the murder of Mr. Verneil Richardson should contact the confidential & independent Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.”
Hind sight is better than no sight. Congratulations to Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club on their decision and to the family of the late Mr. Richardson, the Communities, I offer my condolences.
Trusting the spirit of the upcoming County Cups will be a celebration of Mr. Richardson’s passing.
Peace, Love and Joy
Good luck BBCC.
One of the few clubs that I enjoy patronizing these days.
I hope your initiatives stop the rot before you end up like some of your fellow clubs.
Close the club down.
Let’s have more positive venues for people to congregate, instead of the ones that perpetrate drinking, partying and frivilous entertainment.
This is the 21st century and if you want to succeed…club life is NOT the way to go!!
@NeedsASpankin’ ‘club life’ isn’t the way to go? There is nothing wrong with wanting to go out, listen to music, dance with friends, and have a few drinks to celebrate life, summer, or any envent that causes a celebration. Not everyone that goes out is involved in criminal activity. There are a select few that ruin it for everyone. Such in this case. Not only that, there are people who make money off of parties and events such as Dream Team Tuesday. Oh well, another venue gone due to people who live life on the ‘edge.’
@Honest..stay at home. You can entertain your friends at home. Eat and drink whatever you like..and you can eliminate the riff raff.
Like I said before..these clubs area breeding ground for all types of unacceptable behaviour..and alcohol and drugs bring out the worst in people, especially with some young people who already have emotional problems and a geniune disrespect for anyone that appears to be law abiding citizens.
Sad but true…these clubs need to close for good..I refuse to go to a club that needs bouncers..that indicates that there has already been a problem…
There are lots of decent places to go to besides the workmen’s clubs..they were always considered ‘seedy’ to those of us that have a bit more class and sophistication.
You are a babbling idiot.
Sorry @ Honest, comment was meant for @Needs A Spanking
You are a babbling idiot!
My bad, comment not for you!
