Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro said, “At about 1.24am this morning, police responded to a report of a serious assault at the Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club.

“On arrival they they were met with information that a male had been seriously assaulted at this location.

“He has subsequently succumbed to his injuries. We are not releasing any details on his name or other information at this time, but inquiries are ongoing. He is a 21-year-old male and that is about all I can say at this time.

Detective Pedro continued: “We were faced with a very difficult situation here, patrons obviously very upset, and obviously with the investigation underway some people have been inconvenienced, so I would like to apologise to the members of the public that have been inconvenienced, but obviously we have an important function to conduct here…”

Detective Pedro would not confirm or deny unofficial indications from people on the scene that the victim may have sustained multiple stab wounds, saying it was still early in the investigation.

Emotions appeared to be running high and there was some form of commotion at the scene, with some patrons unhappy about being blocked from leaving as their cars were behind the police cordon.

Some people were being fairly loud, and at least two people [one male, one female] were seen to be placed in a police car, with it unofficially understood that it was due to their actions as police investigated the man’s death, not in relation to the actual assault itself.

Pastor Leroy Bean made his way to the Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club through the night, and was seen speaking and offering his support to those in attendance.

Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the main police number on 295-0011 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.

Police are expected to issue a formal statement later this morning, and we will update as able.

Update 10.20am: The police will hold a press conference later this afternoon. They are expected to address this tragic event, as well as the commotion that ensued upon police arrival.

Update 10.23am: Derrick Burgess, MP for Constituency #5, said “I am deeply saddened and hurt by the news of the tragic death of this young man from Hamilton Parish. Knowing the family, I hope that his parents, grandparents and those who knew and love him find comfort at this very sad time. I extend my personal condolences as well as those of my colleagues in the PLP to them at this time.

“In a community as small as this one, the loss of any person in this horrific manner cannot be tolerated. We encourage witnesses or anyone who can provide details leading to the capture and conviction of the person who committed this heinous act to speak out and assist the Bermuda Police Service in their investigation.”

Update 12.30pm: Shadow Minister for Public Safety Michael Scott said he has liaised with area MP Derrick Burgess, and added his support to the earlier message of condolences sent to the family and friends of the victim, joining Mr Burgess in expressing sadness over the violent loss of life of a young Bermudian..

Mr Scott urged the public to cooperate with the police in their investigation of this serious incident, noting that the community has a key role to play insupporting the police, telling what they know and standing up for law and good order.

Update 2.16pm: The police named the victim of this morning’s assault at Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club as Verneil Richardson and confirmed he was stabbed. They also named Adam King as “a person of interest”.

Update 3.09pm: Full video of press conference added below.

The police said they are treating the case as a murder, and confirmed that Mr Richardson was stabbed in the car park during an altercation.

Detective Pedro said they were “particularly keen” to speak to Adam King, calling him a “person of interest.” He did not call him a suspect, and said he will be making no further comment on that matter.

While Detective Pedro was speaking at the press conference this afternoon, Mr King was turning himself in at Hamilton Police Station.

Update 3.26pm: Police confirm that Mr King has been arrested and is “assisting police with inquiries.”

Update 3.56pm: Full police statements added below.

Superintendent James Howard’s full statement follows below :

On behalf of the Bermuda Police Service, I wish to convey my sincere condolences to the family and friends of 21 year old Mr. Verneil Richardson who sadly lost his life early this morning.

Mr. Richardson was on the property of the Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club in Hamilton Parish where a function was being held. He was involved in an altercation and stabbed. He eventually succumbed to his injuries.

The Bermuda Police Service recognizes the impact this incident will have on this community. I want to reassure you that we are using all the resources at our disposal to bring the offender or offenders to justice.

I would also encourage anyone with information or knowledge of this incident to make contact with the detectives in this case, or Crime Stoppers. Anyone who may have seen or been in contact with Mr. Richardson over the last 24 hours is also asked to make contact with the officers in the case.

I now hand over to Detective Chief Inspector Pedro for him to provide an update on the investigation.

-

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro’s full statement follows below:

At about 1:20am on Wednesday 26th June 2013, the Bermuda Police Service received reports of an assault that had occurred at the Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club in Hamilton Parish.

Emergency Medical Technicians from the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and police officers attended the scene where they found the victim in this case suffering from puncture wounds. He was given medical assistance but later succumbed to his injuries.

I can confirm that the victim in this matter is Mr. Verneil Richardson, a twenty one year old male from Hamilton Parish.

A full complement of detectives from the Bermuda Police Serious Crimes Unit is investigating this incident, and it is being considered as a case of murder.

Forensic crime scene examiners & detectives continue their examination of the evidence gathered from the scene, speaking with witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage.

As I mentioned earlier this morning, we recognize that members of the public were inconvenienced whilst officers conducted their lawful duties at the crime scene, but we consider the integrity of a crime scene to be of paramount importance. However, I also recognize that some of these same people that were inconvenienced may have witnessed this fatal event, and can assist in bringing the offender or offenders to justice.

In addition, I can confirm that a person of interest has since turned himself in and is now in police custody assisting with enquiries as the murder investigation continues.

I am appealing for anyone that saw this incident or can provide information that can assist in identifying and bringing the offender or offenders to justice, to contact detectives from the Serious Crime Unit.

The Serious Crime Unit can be contacted on 247-1739 & 247-1340. Alternatively anyone with information regarding the murder of Mr. Verneil Richardson should contact the confidential & independent Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477 (TIPS).

    • Nanny Pat says:

And to the pieces-of-garbage that were causing chaos for the police afterwards – get a dam cab and go home! Or God forbid, get off your fat arse and walk! Your actions are pathetic and disgusting! A person is dead and you are mad because you can’t get your car out? You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Scumbags.

      • Jem says:

Simpleton people WANTED to leave to go home, whether their car was there or not they were not permitted to leave the club. they were kept behind the crime scene tape. The incident happened outside of the party and when everyone wanted to leave we were forced to stay. not to mention a male police put his hands on a female.
you people come on here and say NOTHING! You know NOTHING and see NOTHING but have the most to say.
Some body is DEAD – who wants to stick around such a scene? And bore me less with the “shouldnt have been out” bs. –

        • letiwas says:

Are you serious? Do you have any awareness or concern about the job that the police have to do? Allowing people to leave would hinder their ability to perform. Give me a break. You sound very immature, selfish and like a real idiot!

Don’t be too hard on the people, chances are liquor is involved and people are not in their right mind, for obvious reasons BWDIK?

    • I hold heartily agree with you as this is a sad situation, regardless of why or how it happened.

A family is grieving and friends and love ones are at a loss for words or answers to such a devastating out come.

Our prayers and thoughts are for and with those that mourn and even the families of the accused that will eventually have to face a judge and jury.

      • Honest says:

Dream Team Tuesdays usually ends around 1. And there are people in the world who work shift work, who don’t have children and are able to hang out then get up for work.

      • BendEm Like Beckam says:

A young man has died, and you somehow feel this is a good time to bring up jobs and make a political jab? You should be trying to make the community come together, instead you are trying to divide! WTF is wrong with you?! @ 80s Role Model, Im pretty sure you are no type of role model to anyone, or at least I hope not. What an idiot you are!!!

My condolences to the family and friends of the victim.

          • Honest says:

@ 80′s Role Model: People want jobs…GO FIND ONE!!!!! Get to an interview and WOW the company. Don’t get there unprepared and unknowledgeable about the company. Look the part, speak the part. But I guess that is too hard, it is easier to blame the government.

    • Ting says:

This is nothing new get over it!!!! Go ask 50 and 60 year olds about there party stories….they would be out till 4 and 5am and still make it work

  8. Red says:

I pray that whomever witnessed anything regarding this senseless crime, tells all. Our island people grieve in general, this young man’s family grieves in particular. Please come forward

  9. Dancehall says:

Thats how the club makes its money having dances maybe management will now start to look at other means since they have so many young criketers there. Maybe make it a more family club after all it is a Government Field.

    • Unjrust Realities says:

Good point . . . but Bailey’s Bay Club has always been a family club.

    • Fed Up says:

don’t blame the club, blame the individual who committed this horrible crime. The club and what functions it hold’s has nothing to do with the situation. It could have been anywhere even in your backyard.

      • Saddened says:

        agree

        • Honest says:

THANK YOU!!! Blaming the function when the young men who run are just working, making a lviving the RIGHT way!! Blame the people who distroy events like this!

    • dthtoo/ says:

      Dancehall,

The bottomline is: Black clubs need to STOP selling the white man’s firewater to raise capital. Think about these five words–rum, drugs, greed, weapons and race-ism (white assault) = one word–DEATH which takes captive the minds, bodies and souls of Black folks.

The Government Field is actually the People’s Field–yours, mine and everyone else. Government is merely the custodian.

  10. Scoalsy says:

This is why there isn’t any night clubs anymore :( to much violence and the punishment is TOOOOO lenient when/if they decide to prosecute them :(

    • Ole says:

25 years and up is hardly lenient…

      • this special island says:

yes the hell it is! especially when we have these young punks 25 and under getting life! Which means they still have time to come out, get a job, get a pension and save for retirement! Not too mention that while they are “locked up” they are still recieving health benefits. Get a grip!

  11. Sir George Somers says:

I don’t understand how some of the patrons can’t just wait patiently, be cooperative and let the police do their jobs! Instead, some were rowdy to the extent they were placed in a police car!

    • sonso says:

      just add liqour!

    • Saddened says:

Keep in mind they probably may have been a little tipsy, as no one expected something like this to happen, so it may have affected their judgment

  12. US Observer In Pink Sand says:

Maybe “alcohol” played its role in this?

  13. WTH DAM SUMMER HAS JUST STARTED, SO SAD. MY CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY. SO DAM SAD.HIS LIFE OVER & YET SO DAM YOUNG. YES I’M SO SAD TO HEAR OF THIS. I HOPE WHOM EVER IS RESPONSIBLE GETS LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE.

  14. Prayerful says:

When you hear Nick Pedro’s name, you know something is really wrong. Haven’t heard from Mr. Pedro for a while, like Rhonda, I was beginning to fell safe.

  15. Concerned says:

Condolences to the family and question comes to mind – SECURITY, where were they or did they not bother to employ a security firm. There is something in place that there are to be so many guards per so many attendees? Correct me if I am wrong on this.

    • Independent says:

      @ Concerned,

Good point. The law says you have to have 1 security guard for every 50 patrons. Thats how we operate at my job.

      • @Concerned says:

I personally don’t think any hired security firm will put their lives on the line to stop acts of violence like this.

        • Truth is killin' me... says:

“Well trained” security guards need legislation to arm themselves with at least pepper spay/mace and/or stun guns.

          • Peter says:

I am an owner of a security firm and have called for tougher legislation to protect my guards and myself as I actively lead from the front lines. @ Concerned is correct in saying that there should be a guard for every 50 patrons but this is not always adhered to due to the economics of hiring a firm like mine. This is where tougher action should be taken against the Liquor License holder to ensure that adequate security is in place at these events. The grey area is that they can argue that this happened outside of their establishment and deem it not their problem. All issues that need a strong look at and provide a solid solution to. My condolences to the victim’s family and friends

            • Joe says:

@Peter @Concerned – Security was present however the party was held at the back hall of the club and the incident happened at the very front in the parking lot. Also, it is believed to be a self-defense case!

        • Bermuda Cat says:

          @ Concerned,

          You are probably right.

  16. Bubbles says:

The dynamics of bay club have gone down the drain! The younger generation should have never been allowed to run the club! Doesn’t even feel the same anymore. They just booted all the old timers out now s*** like this is happening…so so sad. Our generation is lost…

    • Unjrust Realities says:

Agreed . . .the focal point of the club has changed with the younger generation taking over. Family it’s time to rethin what has occurred . . .generation is not lost but they need guidance, and must learn to take advice and lead from their older family members.

Condolences to the family of this young man . . .prayers go out to you.

    • NeedsASpankin' says:

@Bubbles…the dynamics of Bay Club..hahaha that club was always a breeding ground for the ‘undesirables’ of the community..even back in my time…I wouldn’t let mw dog go there! LOL

    • Bay4Life says:

Wow!!! A younger generation gets involved in the operation of a community club and you have the audacity to bring them down in this manner. First of all a board gets voted in, they don’t just take over. Second of all they are all well rounded individuals (adults)that any child in the community could look up to. Lastly instead of bringing them down why don’t you take ya OLD self down there and lend a hand instead of wasting your time making negative comments on this website.

Stand firm Bailey’s Bay, as a community we can work together to make our enviroment a safer place. My condolences to the familty.

      • NeedsASpankin' says:

        Shut up..well rounded indivduals..lol..what a joke.
If you call people who don’t know when to get off the stage when the curtain has closed, gold toothed, earring wearing men and thug grannies..well rounded…hahaha..

There are many decent, hardworking individuals in our community that don’t need to associate with club memberships, who use the excuse of holding a drink in their hands and having a good time and contributing a few ‘measly’ pennies and say they are helping the community.

        • Bubbles says:

          True!

        • Bay4Life says:

@NeedsASpankin ….You sound like an “undesirable” yaself fool…..someone who the cricket club probably banned from their establishment or did you want to be “on stage” and nobody would let you in the door. You say you wouldn’t even let your dog go their but yet you have so much to say about the people who do. Go get a life! Great things are happening at Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club that are not hitting news headlines.

However the matter at hand right now is senseless crime that is taking place all over the island. Find another time to take out your personal issues with Bay Club or Community clubs in general.

  17. Did he do it? says:

Feel safe? You only felt safe because Police haven’t been telling you what’s been going on in this island! Guys are riding around hunting people as I type! I guess they rightfully don’t want to put fear in the island’s people but there is madness going on right now! At least for the last three weeks! I on the other hand believe the people have a right to know! At least so I know who and what to look out for!

    • TRUTH says:

this is the truth, police remaining tight lipped.

      • dthtoo/ says:

Yes, they will remain tight-lipped until the tables are turned on the white community. Mark my words. We will then see a color revolution explode in paradise.

  18. Truth is killin' me... says:

“Name and shame”…if subject “x” is wanted for questioning for act “y” and subject “x” does not go willingly to the Police Station then put his name and photo out there on the news and in the papers and you would be surprised how willingly the public would be to co-operate and get this scurge of “GANG VIOLENCE” on our island under control in quick order! OUR ISLAND IS FED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Truth is killin' me... says:

Update 2.16pm: The police named the victim of this morning’s assault at Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club as Verneil Richardson and confirmed he was stabbed. They also named Adam King as “a person of interest” in the case.

Update 2.31pm: Bernews has confirmed that Mr King presented himself at the Hamilton Police Station a few minutes ago.

I was at the hospital ang was heartbroken at the sight and sound of this young mans mother’s grief. To the murderer/s find your humanity. Because you may have beened conditioned as an animal does not mean you are one. Do you think your very own mothers would not weep and moan in the same gut wrenching way? Do you think the pied piper of your nefarious actions will not seek payment? I hope you fully comprehend what I am getting at here. This cycle has to stop…imagine your mother grieving like that over you. If that does not phase you then you have no soul and therefore no place on this Earth.

    • dthtoo/ says:

Condolences to the family of the person who has lost their life. Secondly, BBCC has tried to offer an environment for socialization PERIOD. Unfortunately, due to some elements of society this establishment has now become another one labelled with a bad rep. It has nothing to do with being taken over by young people. No matter where you go in Bermuda if something CAN happen it will. Let’s not turn this into what direction the young people are taking BBCC but let’s focus on how as a community we can recover from this and provide safe havens of socialization at all establishments albeit seven days a week.

Firstly, condolences to the family of this young man. I must say,MANY people need to wake up and pay attention. I see firsthand the violence in the schools, Primary, and no one says or does anything until a tragedy happens! We have angry, disillusioned, misguided young people who believe violence is the answer! Its not. Baileys Bay has ALWAYS been a family club. Strong sense of community. They shouldn’t be held responsible for the mindless acts of others!!

  26. Kindley says:

So very, very sad. I can’t understand how someone can take another persons life. I know this happens everyday in this world but when it hits home it makes you not feel safe when you are out. We could not believe it and now every time I read your paper there is another murder!! What has happened to Bermuda? Why are there so many murders?? We would love to come back but we are a little scared to. Your Island is the most amazing Island around. I pray to God this stops!! My condolences to the family of this young man.

    • dthtoo/ says:

      Lynn Bauer,

Race-ism (white inferiority/assault) has destroyed the souls of Black folks not only here but the worldover. It is a cleverly devised system which has successfully spawned Black self-hatred (hurt people, hurt people), and until an effective solution is found and implemented to destroy that system, then Blacks will continue to annihilate each other. As a matter of fact, that’s the ultimate aim of that system. That system provided the weak-minded, self-hating Black folks with a cocktail of lies, money, drugs, guns and a mirror reflecting back to them what the targets of their aim should be–people who look like them.

  34. Pray 4 the Families says:

First of all, my condolences to the family. It’s always sad when a senseless act takes the life of a young person, especially a young man who is full of unrealised potential. There is no telling what great things he would have done. So sad, so sad…

At the same time, we have another young man who may (innocent before proven guilty) have committed this horrible act. Young people, young MEN, BLACK MEN, please be aware of the choices that YOU are making, because the consequences can last FOREVER!!!!

Finally, I must say that the “person of interest”, Adam King had the good sense to turn himself in at the Police station within 15 minutes of his name being mentioned at the news conference. Thus saving Police all the unnecessary time and effort it would have taken to locate him had he decided to hide.

    • dthtoo/ says:

      DC,

What goes around comes around. Foolishness is bound in the heart of youth (the young are prone to acting without considering the consequences–to every action there is a reaction). Further, we are not writing our own script for life.

The sports clubs need real security and they need to pay them well.the need to hire that team from ozone night club from years back .i watch these guys control over 300 patrons alone by themselves. A fight would break out inside or outside and their reputation alone would calm the storm
Damm i cant remember their names but one guy was tall and the other was short and built like a tank they both look like they did the arts

  40. Father God, thank you for Mercy says:

So the churches decide to hold a day or a week of public prayer and they think that it will solve everything? You cannot play with God He is not to be mocked. Why can’t you all come together more often, put your ideologies aside and find out what is it that God wants instead of all of you doing your own thing.

Is there any wonder why the island seems to be falling apart at the seams; it’s your fault, yes you, the ‘Christians’.

You are meant to be the salt of the earth, the light of the world, but instead you have conformed and you have lost your savour.

You Bermuda are meant to be the lighthouse in the middle of the Atlantic that is to be a beacon for the world to see but you have chosen to run after other God’s (Careers, Cars, Houses, Education, Politics, Money, Drugs and Alcohol etc.)

Then you have the audacity to blame the way things are on these young people, how dare you! They are only harvesting the seeds that you sowed.

You want to see a change you want things to turn around for the better, there is only one solution and will only ever be one. REPENT and turn from your perverse ways:

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, (who goes around calling themselves by his name, CHRISTIANS)shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

It is you so called ‘Christians’ that are holding Bermuda hostage, and the sad things it is not exclusive to you, it is the world over and sadly there are only a minority that have not bowed their knee.

You all keep crying out “When is this madness going to end, well there is the answer”. When you each take responsibility for where you have grossly gone wrong, stop pointing your finger at everyone else and then stop talking that you are a Christian but live it.

    Shalom!

      mike,

Did you know what he was into that would have been deserving of unc and fam love you dearly? The real crime against humanity is when good people do nothing. Are you one of those good people with all of that love you dearly towards the deceased? If so, then you need to have your understanding illuminated.

  42. Barney says:

Thank God CAT are on the case!

  43. Hmmmmm.... says:

Has anyone even thought whether this Adam person did this, and if he did, why he did???

We always jump to the fact that the named person is guilty and blame them as murderers with all the bad crap that this showers them with, but what happened to the investigation phase?

I am all for punishing the guilty, but don’t forget people do have to be found guilty first!

There are some bad apples out there (and no I don’t know the victim) and sometimes people get caught up in bad situations and react to their detriment.
