Smith Qualifies For 2013 World Championships
Bermuda’s Tyrone Smith has qualified for the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, leaping to a season best 8.13m [26.67ft] at a meet in Poland on Saturday [June 15].
Smith’s 8.13m earned him a second place finish at the 59th Janusz Kusocinski Memorial Meet in the Polish city of Szczecin. Mexico’s Luis Rivera placed first with a leap of 8.30m, which set a new Mexican national record.
The two-time Olympian is at the end of a European tour. Earlier this month he won at a meet in France, and placed 4th in the Czech Republic.
Speaking after yesterday’s meet, Smith said: “For this tour of Europe my goal was to jump 8.15m. I fell just short of that, but I’m happy to have qualified for the World Championships. I know that there is much more on the horizon for me this year and I’m just really excited for what the future holds.”
Bermuda National Athletics Association President Donna Watson said, “I am very pleased and excited for Tyrone. I know he wanted to reach the standard early so he can now concentrate on just getting fitter. He wants to now reach the A standard. I would love to see the other athletes join him.”
The 2013 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Athletics will be held in Moscow, Russia from August 10th -18th, and is expected to attract the best track and field athletes from around the world.
CONGRATS TYRONE….Continue to do well!!!! All the best for the future.
Well done Tyrone! Continue to do great work! Just wish some of Bernews “most frequent posters” could find a way to thank the positive youngsters for their work.
I agree
Forgive my ignorance but what event is he competeing in? I hope it’s pole vault and not long jump if not this dude is a beast, I’d be lucky to jump 8ft. Good luck mate.
Damn it is long jump…I didn’t even know 26ft was possible without a glider.
Well done Tyrone. All the best. Keep striving for your “bestbest”!!
Congratulations.
