Man Jailed: Threatening Pregnant Ex-Girlfriend

July 5, 2013

A 27-year-old man was jailed today [July 5] for threatening to “rip the baby” out of his pregnant ex-girlfriend’s stomach, with the Judge saying that he was not fit for relationships with women and that even “mannequins should stay away from him.”

Makonnen Lowe, 27, was handed down a 2.5 year prison sentence in Supreme Court, with Crown Prosecutor Susan Mulligan telling Justice Carlyle Greaves that among several messages that Lowe had sent was one saying: “I’m going to rip that f***** baby out of your stomach”

The young woman had gone to Police in February 2013 and lodged a complaint after suffering through repeated threats from Lowe.

In passing sentence, Justice Greaves said that according to the evidence read into Court, Lowe was: “Not fit for any relationship with any woman on this earth. Even mannequins should stay away from him.”

Before sentence was passed, Lowe addressed the Court saying: “I apologize. I want to be a father to my child. I am bright and I have potential. I gave my heart to the Lord. I spend 22-1/2 hours locked-up every day. Have mercy on me.”

The sentence includes three years probation with courses in anger management and family counselling. He was ordered to refrain from alcohol and illegal drugs and to not harass the young lady or her parents.

Mother always said, “watch your tongue as not let it get you into trouble”. I guess in today’s modern world it should be watch your tongue as well as your thumbs (texting).

  2. markus says:

2 years for a text message? I don’t know all the details but it sounds like he should have just slept with a 14 year old so that the court would have let him off with a warning like they normally do

      No it was for:

      a) after suffering through repeated threats from Lowe.
      b) several messages that Lowe had sent was one saying: “I’m going to rip that f***** baby out of your stomach”
      c) Im sure more than was listed in this news brief.

Hope this guy really does change his life around and become a better person as a result of this. Some times it takes something bad to make us change. I wish them all well, and hope they can all begin to heal and he can eventually become a positive role model.

      • Whistling Frog says:

@ Liquid Pluma: . You say “Some times it takes something bad to make us change”. For who is it bad or good for? Those that have lost their lives? or been maimed by some fool?

Parents need to teach their children how to make good sound decisions from birth… I’ve seen children hit their parents out of anger and all the parent says is, you’re grounded. But their reward is that they get to stay in the house and play computer games… WTF The behaviour of the child continues until that child grows up and the law intervenes and applies real punishment. And then everyone is shocked by what is going on…

Parents need to take hold of their children before its too late and help them to make better decisions so they can move forward productively.

    • Honesty says:

lmao that’s so wrong but so funny. Mr. Crockwell is familiar with that, probably at home hitting the dougie dance right now. The same fellow who preyed on a girl as she was on swing. #bermudalaws

  3. Nuffin but da Truth says:

enjoy everyday locked up all the time, should have been more,
threatening what you said was unforgivable!

  4. smh says:

For real…I wonder if the judge was inspired by his first name Makonnen to come up with the mannequin comment…

  5. swing voter says:

sometimes threats turn into action. I with Greaves on this one

  6. John says:

“I gave my heart to the Lord.” YEAH RIGHT!

They always find the Lord just before they come to court – should have found Him earlier!

  7. Next says:

Typical of some ignorant Bermudians to excuse this type of behavior because it was “just a text message”. If the police had ignored it and he did go on to do this you’d complain that they police had a chance to stop him. Fools. Just google him name, he has a history and a man who beats on women is the worst type of man right next to deadbeat fathers, child molesters and rapists. What a total loser.

    • Lizzy says:

These foolish women get mixed up with these creeps knowing their history full well but thinking it will never happen to them…then they want to run to the authorities when the guy turns on her. Why get mixed up with a man like that? It’s like if someone has a pitbull they’re looking to get rid of, and you hear that it regularly turned on its previous owners and attacked them, was aggressive, uncontrollable, etc. and you say “He’s so cute. I’ll take him-I’m sure I can turn him into a respectable, gentle family pet” and then get shocked when it turns on you and bites you. You’ve been warned yet decided to take on the aggressive dog anyway, knowing full well its history. Same with these women-they know the guy has an aggressive history but it’s like “he’s so cute, I’m sure I can change him, blah, blah, blah” and then act shocked when he attacks…

      • Come Correct says:

You also have to realize most relationships start out good, most people wear a mask at the beginning and when that mask comes off is when the ugly truth is revealed. I feel you though, my ex got with a recently released convicted drug dealer. I mean, I knew she was dumb but she took it to a next level. When he got locked up he had a few girlfriends, I watched them fight with each other about who was number one, when none of them were. I kinda wonder if she wore one of those name tags that says “Hello, my name is #3/Wednesday”. If you know these things about a persons history why would you even consider them? Yes people change, when they come to a realization, not when you enable their behavior. Blows my mind.
