The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs hosted a night of celebration on Sunday [July 28] to commemorate Emancipation Day. The event honoured Community Heroes, [PDF list here] bringing attention to those people of who have contributed significantly to the development of their respective communities.
The event, held at the Berkeley Institute with politicians from both sides of the aisle in attendance, honoured Community Heroes from Pembroke Parish. Heather Whalen, Senior Community and Cultural Affairs Officer, stated, “Last year, we shifted the programme focus and it was well-received by the audience.
“Instead of featuring aspects of slave experiences, we have refaced the event to bring attention to those people of African descent who have contributed significantly to the development of their respective communities.”
She added, “Last year, we focused on Sandys and St. George’s Parish residents, clubs and organizations. This year, we will celebrate the contributions of “Community Heroes” from Pembroke Parish whose selfless efforts helped to build their communities.”
Hosts for the evening’s event were Gary Phillips and Nishanthi Bailey and after the opening scene the Minister of Community, Culture and Sports Wayne Scott addressed the crowd.
Entertainment was held throughout the evening with dance performances choreographed by Eric Bean, a solo by Larrita Adderly and Lloyd Holder who was accompanied by Owen Simons on keyboards. At the end of the evening the Warwick Gombeys gave a drumming tribute which brought the crowd to its feet.
