PLP: ‘Duty To Present Plan That Meets Criteria’

July 9, 2013

marc bean bermuda PLPSpeaking after the Premier’s National Address last night, Opposition Leader Marc Bean said that “with no plan in place, it is the duty of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party to present a plan that meets that criteria and that can be implemented as soon as possible.”

Last night [July 8] Premier Craig Cannonier delivered a National Address, which was televised and made available online, and covered some of the steps the One Bermuda Alliance has taken following their victory at the polls last year.

Mr. Bean said, “Premier Cannonier’s address to the people of Bermuda highlighted the critical need for a plan to get our people back to work that is factual, visionary, pragmatic and practical.

“With no plan in place, it is the duty of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party to present a plan that meets that criteria and that can be implemented as soon as possible.

“In our official response to the Premier, we will present our vision for creating jobs, supporting business, expanding opportunity and diversifying our economy. It is our hope, that for the good of all Bermudians, that the OBA embrace our vision and work with us to get our people working again.”

  1. CBA says:

It’s amazing that the PLP suddenly thinks it has all the answers. The PLP did so much harm to Bermuda during its 14 years, how can they now claim to know what needs to be done? They should have cleaned up their own mess but didn’t. Stop trying to correct someone else who has to clean up after you.

    • watching says:

its not that the PLP has ever said they have all the answers…but it is clear that the Cannonier administration doesn’t either. So the PLP are offering possible solutions.
Didnt the OBA say its time for a new way of politics? Therefore if the PLP has a viable solution why ignore it simply because it is from the PLP?

      • CBA says:

If they knew how, they would have done it or made it part of their election platform. All this is is them acting as if they know what to do, which they clearly do not. People voted for change on Dec 17th so let’s allow that change to happen.

      • Gave it a Try says:

Sorry Marc. Been there, done that with the PLP.

        • My Two Cents/I'm Just Sayin'/Take It Or Leave It says:

mate you just pulled some bud wordplay:

“Sorry MARC. BEAN there, done that with the PLP.”

          (((Airhorn)))

      • Big Bush says:

#watching….you clearly haven’t been. The OBA have been in for 7 months!! The PLP were in for many years, and they made such a mess of this place it is impossible to turn around immediately …. noone could.

So now 7 months in, we should listen to the clowns that got us here? Now do you understand how ridiculous your comment is?

The PLP need a rebranding, we can NEVER elect them again. NEVER forget.

        • justsayin says:

PLP also need a new roster. And they need a new purpose with new objectives.

  2. PLP Train Wreck says:

Black and Whites need to work together for the sake of all Bermudians. The UBP the PLP initially respected this reality. Judging from PLP support and comments that we are exposed every day, we are headed for another economic disaster if we listen to the PLP since they do not want white participation except under very specific terms. Life is not always the way we want it — life is real and tolerance benefits everyone.

    • Time Shall Tell says:

Reality doesn’t fit in your world now does it???

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

What did PLP Train Reck state that makes you think his/her opinion is not based in Reality? Please clarify if you can……………

        LOL

  3. Hey says:

    Wait for it…

    Blah blah Space
    Blah blah Fishing
    Blah Blah Deep Sea Mining…

All pie in the Sky or the PLP would have done them instead of just talking about them.

  4. skeptic says:

hmmm – seems like a big gap to me between a “plan” and a “vision”? Vision has lots of room for spin and political granstanding, a plan would have clear substantive steps that can be implemented in a reasonable time frame.

  5. Ty says:

Mr. Marc Bean. The key words in your entire statement are “work with us to get our people working again”. In actual fact, the only three words I am interested in are WORK WITH US. Please keep this thought in mind when presenting your ideas to the present Govt. I have seen and heard enough of the School Yard Bullying crap that goes on between the two parties. I have already lost faith in either one of you, but I have grand kids and I hope to Christ that things get better for them.

  6. Tommy Chong says:

When the plp releases their plan I hope part of it is to admit how their party allowed more non IB work permits to be approved than ever before. Also they should admit how these permits were approved despite the fact that no proof of not having a Bermudian to fill the position was given & how this greatly affected the amount of unemployed we have at present. They caused the issue now they should fess up to gain back their lost loyalty to their fellow country men. If they can’t be the better person I don’t want to hear squat from them.

    • Time Shall Tell says:

During the same time they where approving those very permits, Bermuda’s unemployed made up less then 2%…… Look it up.

      • Tommy Chong says:

A levy burst starts with a crack. During this time the recession was not felt in Bermuda & employers had overstaffed. PLP had opened the floodgates & once the recession took hold employers had to decide who to let go & they chose Bermudians over their foreign staff. There was one company that came along after this flood of permit approvals & took full advantage of it & became so successful they are now the biggest chain in Bermuda while ousting the competition.

Permit laws are not the only ones that plp pushed to the wayside. PLP also disregarded the oversized vehicles law which as with the permit laws other companies joined the band. Now the pedestrians of Bermuda aren’t comfortable walking anywhere without a sidewalk because of the danger of being run over by vehicles that barely fit on their side of the line. This must be a lovely experience for tourist trying to get around the island.

There are many more laws that were skewed by plp that I wont even bother mentioning since I know others will. I don’t side for any political party I just want whats best for my country & its people but I have no respect for any party who doesn’t admit to their wrong doings & pretends they didn’t happen.

  7. JONO says:

Marc,,,think it through thoroughly before you talk…It could well be that the OBA has thrown you the bait.,,,,..and are awaiting you to take the hook,,,,at the detriment of the PLP

  8. God 1st says:

We have leader of integrity, morality which speaks and thinks for himself.

The insecure oba/ubp monarchy and it’s supporters are clutching at straws knowing that the O.B.A (UBP) have 1 term.

    • frank says:

you said it right one term, the leader said in his speech that he want to put Bermudians back to work
then how come we have all these non Bermudians working as landscapers gardeners pot washers waiters check out buzz and island cusine the mef resturrants and don,t forget the nannys that work for more than one employer it is time for the people of Bermuda to call for a vote of no confidence in the OBA GOVERNMENT

      • Double Standards says:

Should have called a no confidence vote against the PLP when they issued more work permits for blue collar jobs than any previous government.

Funny how you and other zealots stayed tight lipped during those days.

        Interesting indeed.

        • DarkSideofTheMoon says:

LOL any previous government?? There was only one before the PLP ;-) .

Marc Bean? Integrity? I think not…. and I vote(d) PLP

      • Cousin says:

Frank maybe there is a reason you don’t see bermudians working in the hospitality trade or landscapers. These company’s need people who are willing to work … If these company’s don’t have workers that show up for work when employed full time, they lose customers then go out of busness … There is plenty of work out there so get off your lazy &@”$& and stop waiting for a 9-5 job …

        • frank says:

cousin I am retired not all Bermudians are lazy the employers do not want Bermudians period because he can work the non Bermudian like a slave and get away with it with the blessing from the present government

      • Sandy Bottom says:

And who gave them those work permits FRANK?

        • Tommy Chong says:

SO TRUE Sandy, but to be the devils advocate oba has not lifted a finger to curb this & to add insult to injury the premier has partnered one of the major offenders that Frank mentioned. Even stevie wonder could see the difference in the demographics of workers from the time he visited during ubps governing compared to present. It’s one thing to import Portuguese to do one or two specific blue collar jobs back in thirties when we had a smaller population & another to import other foreigners to do almost every blue collar job we have. It looks especially conspicuous when these workers all come from one specific country when there are so many other countries that workers could have come from to do these jobs. Then again maybe the majority of Bermudians can’t tell the difference between the origin of one asian to the next & think that these workers come from different countries in asia. The ironic thing is I have had a Chinese & Korean person on two different occasions ask me why there was so many people from this country working here & has it always been this way.

      • John E. Thorne says:

It was the PLP that gave them the work permits!

    • R@s cl@d says:

      blah blah blah baaaaaaaaaa

  9. Bermyman says:

Ok great, I very much look forward to hearing the plan from the great PLP minds. Is there anyone within the PLP who has a 1st class economics or finance degree!?

You had your chance at planning and drove the country into peril with it!?

    • watching says:

It doesnt appear that Cannonier or Richards have a clue what to do with their economics or finance degrees because it has been business as usual since Dec 18. In fact, they have largely carried on with PLP policies and initiatives.

    • frank says:

well bob is not that guy anyone that borrows $8000000000 today but can’t tell us what the payback rate is going to be tomorrow is not that guy

      • papasmurf says:

When did he borrow $8000000000 ($8 billion)?

        • Sandy Bottom says:

          Frank get confused easily, apparently.

      • Bermyman says:

Can you Frank!? He knows you have to borrow now at a preferential rate or you risk paying a higher amount in future. 70% of Government revenues go to paying the civil service. That is not going to change overnight, but once the S.A.G.E can implement plans to reform the civil service wastage which manifested under the PLP’s watch, then hopefully significant changes to the cost of what is going on can take place.

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

Not sure of the amount he borrowed but he was right about the interest rates going up just like he was right about the economy and the recession. I need his crystal ball……….

        LOL

  10. Victor says:

Bean, your party had fourteen years and your only success was running the country into the ground. Now please go away for at least a little while for all our sakes.

    • watching says:

Not quite…there were many successes…and some failures. Anyone who feels that the whole of the PLP 14 years was a failure is completely biased and irrelevant.

      • Double Standards says:

        Agreed.

The same way that anyone who feels that the current Government hasn’t made any positive movements in their first 6 months is also completely biased and irrelevant.

      • Victor says:

        Name a few then…

        • Sandy Bottom says:

A few elite politicians got very rich very quickly. That’s viewed as ‘success’, right?

        • justsayin says:

Bermuda experienced its biggest economic growth in consecutive years and Bermuda at point had the highest GDP per capita in the world. We were a major offshore reinsurance giant and we had more jobs than Bermudians could fulfill. The downside to this story was that Bermuda did not know how to sustain the economic growth and influx of expats. Housing became a crisis was not rectified the way it should have been.

          • Victor says:

Utter Rubbish – What you are alluding to are infrastructure and polices put in place over decades by the former UBP Government, the benefits of which accrued through the PLP years.

  11. Navin Johnson says:

God 1st you are being facetious right?

  12. Duhh says:

The man talk. Sensible about bermudians working together and all I hear is negativity all u old bermudians need to get over the past and jz work together forget party against party quarrels nd jz work it out that’s all bean is sayn!!!! Stop Tryna bash the man for talkn sensible and collective

    • DarkSideofTheMoon says:

      Can someone translate please?

  13. Verbal Kint says:

Anyone remember the Whack-a-mole game. That’s what Marc Bean reminds me of. Every time he sticks his head up out of the hole he seems to stay in, Bop Bop Bop. He gets, figuratively, hit on the head by a bunch of people.

  14. Double Standards says:

Mr. Bean unfortunately I cannot take your calls for working together seriously.

I mean just after the last election it was revealed that it was a PLP policy to not have any of its elected memebrs and/or senators sit on any Government Board or take part in any form of a bi-partisan cabinet. The reason given for such an isolationist policy was that your “team” didn’t and don’t want to assist the current Government in achieveing anyof its goals or help them stay in power.

The fact this is actual PLP policy exemplifies that it is simply party over Bermuda for your “team” and that power means everything.

Why don’t you lift this divisive policy, first and foremost, and then you can start to make overtures of working together? Until then your are not being genuine or true in such pronouncements.

  15. Bermuda Boy says:

Bean go back to sleep, plp will never be govt again.

  16. d.o. says:

Is this a touch of guilt for what your govt created?????????

  17. Time Shall Tell says:

They want Bermudians working but didn’t put Bermudians as a priority to do work on the dock. This was done because they felt Bermudians could not complete the job on time, yet we still have months past stated date to wait for the dock to be completed even with the foreign work force they used.

    • Bermuda Male says:

Any particular reason why you didn’t make off when foreigners were used to construct the NSC pool or to fix the incinerator?

And I had two family members who worked on the dock. Crisson construction is a Bermudian firm.

      Hypocrite.

  18. pilot011 says:

PLP will be Gov’t again. You all forget OBA won by default and the next election will prove just that.

  19. Lizzy Trumparani says:

Why don’t we all just admit that the PLP makes a great opposition. We should retain as such forever.

  20. navin johnson says:

The PLP realize they are becoming more irrelevant with each passing day….

  21. CRB37 says:

you know why these foreign workers will work in these jobs. you pay them next to nothing , they live in a 2 bedroom house with 20 of their mates. sleeping in shifts so 9 dollars an hour for 70 or 80 hours a week would cover them. meanwhile Bermudians have families to look after high rents and mortages to pay if your fortunate to own a house and cannot not do it on a mere 9 dollars an hour. if we do work all those hours who looks after our children and when they get in trouble you shoot right to its because of the lack of disicpline. no Mom and Dad are tired of bussing their backsides trying to make ends meet and some one keep on moving the other end. im just saying

    • Tommy Chong says:

Most of what you typed is on point but some of it is either overstated or understated. I know foreigners mostly from a certain country do have accommodations where they exceed the occupancy norm but I doubt it is as many as 10 to a room. On the other end of the spectrum I’m sure most of these foreigners get paid more than 9 an hour. They are not as naive as some may think & have built a tight knit community that share employment information. When it comes to getting paid they are far from shy in voicing the amount they want even if it means making some pseudo excuse to their employer about being poverty stricken in their country. How I know this is that I know many of them send back 2 grand a month to their country which is impossible at 9 an hour to do in Bermuda & still have the ability to have enough for living. Beside if you take note many of them have designer clothes & bags plus the latest mobile device. The poor from their country stay in their country with little to no assistance because in their society money is king above all else & if you don’t have it you’re of little worth.

  22. Patricia says:

“With no plan in place, it is the duty of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party to present a plan that meets that criteria and that can be implemented as soon as possible.

“In our official response to the Premier, we will present our vision for creating jobs, supporting business, expanding opportunity and diversifying our economy. It is our hope, that for the good of all Bermudians, that the OBA embrace our vision and work with us to get our people working again.”

Is Marc Bean for real. You got to be kidding me!! This is something the PLP should have done during their last 5/6 years in Government. Unbelievable. But I supppose what else should we expect from an Opposition. Everything that they should have done they want to do now or say we will do. You had your turn Marc Bean. Lets see what a new government can do now. Please. Lord help this Island.

  23. here's a thought..... says:

    what arrogance. just incredible.
