Saaremaa Athlete Breaks Her Mother’s Record
Gold medal winner Linda Treiel from Saaremaa set a new NatWest Island Games record in the women’s shot putt, breaking a record set by her own mother 16 years ago.
Her throw of 14.16 shattered the previous record of 12.86 that was set by her mother Virge Treiel in Jersey in 1997.
Treiel comes from a very athletic family, with her parents having won 20 medals between them at the Games, and her shot putt medal marked the 21st medal for the Treiel family.
One of five track and field athletes in Bermuda representing the Estonian island of Saaremaa, Treiel is scheduled to compete in other disciplines including the high jump and discus throw.
Saaremaa has six medals overall so far, and has won the gold medal in both the male and female shot putt.
