Female Funeral Director Honoured Overseas
Bermuda funeral director Doreen Williams-James was honored recently by the 100 Black Women of Funeral Service at the 2013 International Academy Awards of Funeral Service Luncheon in New Orleans.
The first female funeral director to own and operate a funeral service on the island, Ms Williams-James established the Alpha Memorial Chapel Funeral Home located on York Street, St George’s in August 1993.
The mother of two was accompanied by her daughters 15-year-old Channa and 11-year-old Brianna who have taken an active role in helping with the family business.
Speaking after receiving the award Ms Williams-James dressed in Bermuda shorts attire said, “I am truly honored and humbled to receive such a prestigious award from such an organization. I not only have been inspired but have been given a great opportunity to realize how important my service is in the community.”
The 100 Black Women of Funeral Service, Inc. was established in 1993, to provide a network for black women and minorities who have chosen funeral service as their profession or career.
