Philippe Cousteau Meets Children At BAMZ
Today [Aug 8] Philippe Cousteau, the grandson of the world renowned Jacques Cousteau, was on hand at the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo (BAMZ), representing the local Blue Halo organization to speak to local kids right next to the North Rock Exhibit tank. The Blue Halo is a name to describe the proposed marine reserve within Bermuda’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This initiative is the first step toward protecting the greater Sargasso Sea.
Born in Santa Monica, California, Cousteau grew up in France and the United States. He graduated from St. Andrews University in Scotland where he earned an M.A. in History. In 2000, he co-founded EarthEcho International with his mother Jan Cousteau and his sister Alexandra Cousteau. EarthEcho International is based in Washington, D.C., and its mission is to “empower youth to take action that protects and restores our water planet.”
Philippe Cousteau Jr is a special correspondent for CNN International where he is the host of the Going Green series and reports on environmental and humanitarian stories worldwide. As a member of the legendary Cousteau family, Philippe is continuing the work of his father through EarthEcho International where his goal is to engage and empower people to take action for a brighter future.
Cousteau also speaks around the world on conservation efforts, fund raising for his non profit and educating others on how to take part in conservation efforts on both a local and global scale. But today, he took time out to chat with the kids on the issues facing the planet’s oceans with fun games, questions and story-telling.

The Blue Halo initiative represents a real opportunity in so many ways. Not only will it provide the necessary protection to the Sargasso Sea and stop illegal fishing, it could be a boon to tourism in that scientists and interested visitor groups can be attracted to the island. This is a good example of how/where we should be spending our dollars… keep the gambling in Vegas.
