Sandys 360 Underwater Hockey Demonstration

August 18, 2013

The Sandys 360 Community Sports and Aquatic Centre recently hosted an underwater hockey demonstration at the west end premises. Warren Cabrel, a Bermudian studying at the University of Zurich, took up the sport in Switzerland. He was at the demonstration, along with Phillip Hubb, a player and coach, to train the volunteers in the sport.

Underwater Hockey is played around the globe. Like ice hockey, the purpose is to move a puck from one end to the other goal, however, it all done underwater, with a mask, snorkel and fins. There are 6 players from each team in the pool, with 4 substitutes switching in and out.

Victor Rubbery says, “We currently have a group of volunteer players from our Masters Swim team, but we could certainly use more. If there is a large interest, we could host practices and games, and even international tournaments.

“In the success of the Island Games, introducing a new international sport can only help boost Sports Tourism in Bermuda.” For more information, contact Victor Ruberry at vruberry@logic.bm.
