Summer Employment Programme Winds Down

August 9, 2013

One-hundred and fifty Bermudian youngsters will return to college or university having completed nearly three months in the Government’s Summer Employment Programme [SEP].

The annual SEP, which kicked off in May, had dozens of Bermudian college students working throughout Government, the private sector and the Island’s non-profit and charitable organizations.

Earlier this week,  Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy took the opportunity to visit a few of the interns at their work sites to gauge their feedback of the employment programme.

Minister Fahy said, “This year we had some exceptional students who truly embraced this work experience opportunity. This week, I was delighted to visit with a few of them at their place of employment to hear from them firsthand about how this programme has benefitted them.

“I can honestly say that we have some very talented, passionate, bright and creative young people who are very eager to take their place in the Bermuda workforce once they have completed their studies.”

Students participating in the SEP encompassed the fields of Law; Business (Global Management, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources); Health (Pre-Medical, Physical Therapy, Global Health); Science (Environmental Science, Zoology); Education; Information Technology; Mechanical Engineering; Motor Vehicle Mechanics; Communications and Hospitality to name a few. For their efforts they will receive a $5,000 stipend.

Minister Fahy concluded, “The SEP continues to be a very positive and worthwhile initiative, and is evidence of this Government’s continued commitment to provide training and development opportunities to ensure a sustainable workforce.

“A critical part of our broader workforce goals is to ensure that we have qualified human resources to support Bermuda’s economy. We are making progress with the drafting of a National Training Plan, and we see the SEP as an important component to the overall Plan.”

Today [Aug 9] the Minister will host a small reception for the students where he will personally thank each of them for their participation this summer.

  1. Fed Up says:

Plase don’t forget about the students studying in England, they don’t return until after this program has started, usually the beginning of June and are on island until around the end of September. These also are very well deserving students.

  2. Doesn't hurt to ask... says:

Question…would I be able to apply to any of these jobs (that pertain to my field) once these students have left? I am in need of further employment as I am trying to return to university (in January) as well. And how may I do so?
