Wehmeyer Crowned HSBC Jr Par 3 Champion

August 10, 2013

Sam Wehmeyer was crowned the 2013 HSBC Junior National Par 3 Champion today [Aug 10] after defeating Mitchell Campbell on the second hole of a sudden death playoff. It was a back and forth day, with three different players holding the lead at some point in the final round.

Brady Cordeiro birdied his first two holes to vault into the lead, before a couple of bogeys slipped him back, ultimately finishing in third place overall. Mitchell started his day with 11 straight pars, finding himself in the lead after 10 holes and still tied for the lead with four holes to play.

A double bogey from Mitchell on the 15th appeared to hand the title to Sam, but Mitchell birdied two of his last three holes to force a playoff. Sam held his nerve in the playoff, in which the first hole was halved in pars, and sealed the win when Mitchell bogeyed the second playoff hole.

Brady’s third place finish overall was also good enough to secure him the 13-15 Division title by one shot over Dakota Lamb, fresh off his win at the HSBC BJGA International Classic. Dakota had a hole in one at the 11th hole, his second hole of the day, but that wasn’t enough to overcome Brady. Mikus Ming was third in the Division.

The 12 and Under Division was also an exciting finish – after Joe Watson jumped out to an 8 shot lead on the first day, but struggled early in the second round, opening the division up. Ultimately, Joe held on for a two shot victory over Tyler Emery, who was a shot ahead of Kenny Leseur.

Elizabeth Parsons made it two Championships in a row, defending her Par 3 title from 2012 and finishing 7th overall.
