Following a long period of heated anticipation that can be typical with Apple product releases, the company has announced their upcoming iPhone 5S, the successor to the currently available iPhone 5, bringing with it several innovative new features.

Predominant among those new features is Apple’s own patented TouchID technology, allowing you to unlock the phone with a quick and easy scan of your fingerprint. While this brings up obvious security concerns for those not keen on divulging one of their most private identifying features to Apple, the company has promised that all TouchID data, including memory of your fingerprint, will be stored locally on the phone only, with no data making its way to Apple’s servers.

The sensor involved in scanning fingerprints is quite advanced in and of itself, allowing a fingertip to be scanned from any orientation and with absolute fidelity, ensuring top-notch security without the need to utilize a password in order to access the home screen ever again.

Another high-profile announcement centred on the fact that the iPhone 5S will be powered by a 64-bit processor – a first among smartphones. This leap forward in mobile processing power promises to make daily tasks much more efficient on the device, including better video playback, improved multitasking, and generally snappier performance from the updated iOS 7, the mobile operating system on which the iPhone 5S will run.

Finally, the iPhone 5S will sport a completely overhauled camera with a slew of new features, most notably the patented 5-element lens that sports a 15 percent larger active sensor area, allowing for higher quality photographs than ever before. With congruent updates in iOS 7, the new camera will offer features like automatic white balance and exposure levels, auto-stabilization of even the shakiest captures, auto-focus matrix metering, and the ability to automatically detect the best of a series of photographs taken using the new Burst Mode feature.

Apple also announced a cheaper phone, the iPhone 5C, which will come in several new colors, including yellow, blue and pink.
