Forbes Magazine Features “Nick the Doorman”

September 4, 2013

[Updated] Known for their very personal reviews of hotels and other businesses around the world, Forbes magazine has cast their gaze on Bermuda’s Fairmont Southampton Hotel in their latest travel piece, allowing the focus to centre around a gentleman known as Nick the Doorman, the hotel’s front end manager and resident expert on all things Bermuda.

Nick DeRosa

The doorman in question, real name Nick DeRosa, stands out to the reviewer as the epitome of great customer service, full of not only everything you’d expect from the person in charge of greeting the hotel’s patrons and helping them to get settled on the premises, but also of good advice and a wealth of knowledge about the island in general. From the reviewer’s point of view, this makes the Fairmont Southampton an easy choice after a trying flight and bus ride to arrive at the hotel; that choice should only be easier for those visiting Bermuda for the first time.

The piece goes on to praise DeRosa not only for his prowess as a doorman and front end hotel manager, but also as a prime example of how one person can change a company’s culture for the better. Several employees, both those who work above and below DeRosa on the company totem pole, take the time to reflect on the many positive changes that he instilled in the employees around him, and how the experience that the hotel offers its customers has been vastly improved by his friendly attitude and excellent work ethic.

At its end, the piece works to recommend not the Fairmont Southampton itself, but rather the benefits of hiring the right people for the right jobs.

Update Sept 5: Shadow Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert issued a statement saying: “The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party congratulates Nick “The Doorman” DeRosa for his recent, excellent profile in Forbes Magazine. We in Bermuda have long acknowledged Mr. DeRosa as one of tourism’s shining lights and premier ambassador to the world.

“Nick DeRosa epitomizes what Bermudians, at their best, bring to the table in the areas of making our visitors feel welcome and in exceeding their expectations. Now, the world is taking notice of his excellent service, pleasant manner and professional demeanor and we are extremely happy for and supportive of, this outstanding young Bermudian”.

Mr Derosa! You treat locals and visitors the exact same when they step out of their vehicle at Fairmont. You make locals feel like they’re on vacation with the way you greet us even if we’re just dining or having some drinks. Thank you! You are a leader and an amazing example to the many people who are in hospitality and in the service industry.

  16. The Skink says:

This gentleman is one of two reasons the Fairmont Southampton Princess is my preferred Bermudian! He is genuine, warm, and professional. I exited the hotel after an evening of entertainment and for a moment, I thought he owned the hotel. I remarked to my wife about his professional manner.

Some wealthy people through tantrums to get into Forbes Magazine, just to have their name on the richest persons list. This gentleman was himself and had his name placed in this premier magazine. Folks, this is where excellence in life can get you.

  17. The Skink says:

I really mean to say the Fairmont Southampton Princess is my preferred Bermudian Hotel. Apologies.

  18. Well Done Bermuda's Youth says:

Well done Nic.. I too have been the recipient of your hospitality and I must even when I am not staying there but visiting the hotel on business I find your manner refreshing. I ditto your wife’s words….

Keep up the good work, you are proving that there are Bermudians in our industry that love what they do and can be an example to others, together we can all turn this industry around.

    Well done!

  19. truthbetold says:

Please keep it up; this was well deserved.

  20. Claudette Simons says:

Little Nick, I am so proud of you for just being you!!! “One has to find a balance between what people need from you and what you need for yourself (Jessye Norman) and you have found both. Congratulations, reach for the stars, they are attainable, love always MOMMY!!

  21. Denise says:

Our “little” Nick has always been so sweet and caring with an infectious smile. The family is so, so proud of you; but of course we’ve always known that you are the BEST no matter what you do. God has blessed you with a beautiful wife and daughters already, so He sees what a wonderful person you truly are.

    Love you,
