BNAA To Host Jumps Camp With Smith, King
The Bermuda National Athletic Association [BNAA] announced the first ever “Jumps Camp” to all local athletes ages 11 – 18 who are interested in jumping events.
Tyrone Smith [pictured] and Arantxa King two of the islands renowned athletes in long jump will be on island conducting the camp. They will provide a wealth of knowledge in theory and technicality that will transform our athletes to the next level of competition on the international front.
In addition, these two outstanding athletes will speak on their journey prior to becoming professional athletes; their university experience, combining academics and competition which led to hard work, commitment, and sacrifice, as they made their way forward to compete on the world stage against the best athletes in their field.
Smith’s resume is quite impressive. Currently, he is Bermuda’s national record holder in long jump, and has gone on to capture several medals representing Bermuda against some of the world’s best athletes during international meets. In addition, he represented Bermuda in 2008 Beijing, China, the 2012 Olympics, London England making it to the finals in the Long Jump.
He has competed in several World Championships, Indoors and Outdoors. Furthermore, he was voted Bermuda’s male athlete of the year in 2010, 2011 and 2012. As a former collegiate athlete, he attended University of Missouri. He is a 3 time NCAA Division II All-American in long jump. He holds the school records at both indoor and outdoor in long jump. Presently, the professional athlete resides and trains in Houston, Texas.
King is also a professional athlete living and training in Lexington, Kentucky and is competing on the international circuit. In 2008 she made her first Olympic appearance in Beijing, China for Bermuda, and four years later, 2012 in London, England she represented Bermuda, and most recently the World Championships.
King is the gold medalist from the 2005 World Youth Championships and a NCAA Division 1 All-American in Long Jump. She currently holds the female long jump record, won numerous medals representing Bermuda on the international stage and was voted Bermuda’s female athlete of the year in 2010. King is a graduate of Stanford University with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Sociology.
The one week “Jump Camp” will be conducted during the school mid-term holiday, Monday October 28th, – Friday November 1st, at the National Sports Centre [NSC]. There will also be some assistance throughout the week from Brian Wellman and our National High Jump Coach Rohaan Simons.
