Sailing: Saints, Nagel Finish 3rd In Weymouth

October 16, 2013

This past weekend saw local sailors take on the top UK youth teams at the RYA Youth Match Racing Nationals in Weymouth, UK.

The team of three comprised of Jason Saints [Helm], Jordan Saints [Main], and Emily Nagel [Bow]. The two Saints brothers were unable to return to Bermuda this year to join Lance Fraser for the Gold Cup due to their university studies, but were able to pull a team together in the UK not to miss out on the action.

In cold and blustery conditions the team sailed well in the Olympic class Elliott 6m boats against stiff competition.

One of their best-sailed races was against Mark Lees, currently ranked 26th in the world. Breaking out of a dial up, good tactical calls the team to gain control at the pre start and come out ahead as they started the first upwind leg. With betterboat speed they were able to open up a sizable lead around the course and seized the win.

The team’s successful momentum continued as they finished the round robin in a three-way tie for first with a 7 wins and 1 loss record.

On the final day of sailing the team battled with Philip Bendon of Ireland in the semi finals, but were knocked out after two close races. The team were pleased to finish the event in third position and look forward to improving at the next event.
