Opposition Leader Delivers Reply To The Throne

November 15, 2013

The “attempt to grant status is modern day wickedness against one’s own people” and “has nothing to do with economics, and everything to do with the political sorcery of solidifying one’s power by altering Bermuda’s voting base,” Opposition Leader Marc Bean said today [Nov 15] in the formal Reply to the Throne Speech.

Mr Bean said the PLP supports the Government’s proposals to: Expand the Career Pathways Programme, provide funding to Focus Counselling and the Family Centre, have a gaming referendum in the first quarter of 2014, end conscription, strengthen Food Security, fully implement the Cash Back to Communities Program and revisions to the Criminal Code to ensure that sentences laid down in Bermuda aren’t watered down in the UK.

He also said they support the modernization of the Proceeds of Crime Act, introduce Co-Parenting Orders, introduce absentee balloting and extend the days for the advance poll, introduce a Vulnerable Persons Act and strengthen the Senior Abuse Register Act 2008, mandatory ID checks in bars and efforts to become a certified Air Navigation Service Provider.

The Opposition Leader suggested a raft of measures including dismantling the Middle School System, increasing the penalties for Financial Assistance fraud, ending the long standing practice of jailing of Bermudians for debt, a 2 year freeze on all government fees or taxes that contribute to the high cost of electricity.

The PLP also suggested duty relief on the importation of food to drive down food prices, a tax and duty holiday for new startups and single owner entrepreneurs for 2 years, cannabis reform, developing our Marine Exclusive Economic Zone, freeing up regulations to attract foreign investment and much more.

Mr Bean said the OBA’s Throne Speech should have given Bermudians a real plan to get Bermudians back to work, stimulate growth, a real plan to confront the deepening cost of living crisis and real ideas on diversifying our economy and real solutions for increasing government revenue.

“Our people saw an OBA that put everyone else first and Bermudians last. Our people saw an OBA that couldn’t keep a promise or keep a story straight from one day to the next,” said Opposition Leader Marc Bean.

“Our people saw an OBA that gave away work permits, tax breaks for businesses and jobs for OBA insiders like Halloween candy, while cutting civil servant pay and slashing programs.”

Mr Bean continued, “From this observation, what does the OBA offer in their second Throne Speech to give hope for Bermudians still waiting for the trickle down, and still waiting for an OBA jobs plan?

“A cynical plea for Bermudians to be patient, while the OBA busily schemes to give away status to thousands of non-Bermudians, and further push our people to the economic and political sidelines.

“The attempt to grant status is modern day wickedness against one’s own people of the highest order, and no amount of vile, deceptive propaganda, no amount of coordinated public relations via surrogates who claim to be non partial and pro Bermudian, will be able to justify these activities.”

“As our elders know, this move is has nothing to do with economics, and everything to do with the political sorcery of solidifying one’s power by altering Bermuda’s voting base,” Mr Bean said.

The Opposition Leader continued, “With new leadership comes a new vision, a new approach and new way of doing things. Having listened to the people, and been forced to take a long, hard, critical look at ourselves, we have united behind this vision and will work tirelessly to see it become a tangible reality for the people and the island that we love. Bermudians deserve nothing less.

“Of our vision, there will be those who use our inaction on these matters over the course of our 14 year time in government, as an excuse for their lack of progress. Of our vision there will be those who focus purely on the financial costs and not the human costs. Neither austerity, nor reckless spending, but a balanced approach that puts all Bermudians at the centre, is what we advocate.”

“Wickedness”? “Sorcery”? Sounds like the old Mr. Bean and his “Demonic” adjective. So much for changing the way the PLP does business. Same old same old.

    • Susie Quattro says:

Yeah, this sounds more like him. He must have got rid of the more-classy ghost writer he used a few weeks ago. He’s back to calling people wicked demons again.

You’ve got to laugh. He says “Bermudians don’t need slogans. Bermudians need jobs”. It’s like he’s forgotten that it was the PLP who oversaw thousands of Bermudians being thrown out of work. And it’s the current government that got 420 Bermudians into employment in the last 6 months.

      • Reas0n says:

“Bermudians don’t need slogans. Bermudians need jobs”

Now that’s a pretty good slogan right there.

        • Sandy Bottom says:

It’s a slogan. Bermudians are getting jobs now, and were losing them under the PLP. That’s the irony.

        • Everett True says:

Marc Bean, you are not capable.

You have no ideas, and you are not experienced enough.

          • Question says:

Question then begs – who is the Premier again?

            Q

(just using your logic from your post above)

          • Tolerate says:

The “attempt to grant status is modern day wickedness against one’s own people” and “has nothing to do with economics, and everything to do with the political sorcery of solidifying one’s power by altering Bermuda’s voting base,”
And who the f*** is “our people”?
Come on serious? So now the race card is played it’s the “OBA is against OUR PEOLPLE”? Who people is that Mr. Bean? Are they ALL Bermudians black AND white?
Our people saw an OBA that couldn’t keep a promise or keep a story straight from one day to the next,” Well who was them people a little while back that was all for moving forward together for the betterment of Bermuda.
And really, this is the response I’ve been waiting to read? A few days ago I had some new found respect for the PLP, but wow; reality check. This is nothing but thoughtless ranting.

    • Joonya says:

      He’s a self proclaimed prophet.

    • Mazumbo says:

Good Mark, your only repeating what your for-fathers had been advocating, they cant handle anti-colonial confrontation , the more things change they remain the same.

      • Mike Hind says:

        …kinda like your posts.

        Except, they never change…

        • Mazumbo says:

Same s*** different day, de struggle continues.

          • Everett True says:

No it doesn’t, stop blaming race on your own failings. Do something about it.

          • Mike Hind says:

The hate is strong in this one.

            • Mazumbo says:

Your concept of hate is irrelevant to this conversation and is very shallow
Every black leader who spoke for the underprivileged and the oppressed during the Civil Rights and beyond have been labeled Communist ,
Pest, Antagonist, etc, etc , so comments reflect your ideology!

              • jt says:

So you believe this was an effective reply to the throne speach? How so?

              • Mike Hind says:

                And your comments reflect yours.

And it’s one of race-based hatred and division and moral superiority and it’s wrong and it’s sick and it’s bad for Bermuda.

              • Everett True says:

Mazumbo, the problem is that you bring race and ‘de struggle’ into conversations and debates where it isn’t warranted. It’s all you’ve got. Why I was criticizing Marc Bean was because I think most people saw a really positive throne speech, with some strong ideas, and Bean had no come back apart from the same old rhetoric…brother this, wickedness and vile and of course “our people” (you lost Marc).

Basically what he is latching into is that he has no clue, but he leads the typically black party, so come on guys, back me, right? Wrong. You do have to have some policies Marc. Race is not enough, not for your one dimensional arguments Mazumbo, or to lead us out of tough times.

          • Esther Elaine Kelly says:

@mazumbo:Did you pass Post Office 101?

      • Esther Elaine Kelly says:

Now I see why you could not pass Post Office 101.

  2. Surrogates? says:

Surrogates. Really? Are we still using that type of language?

  3. Joonya says:

“political sorcery of solidifying one’s power by altering Bermuda’s voting base”

They would have tried the ole “go fornicate in trees” bit, but it had already been taken..

  4. Regurgitation says:

Pretty vile remarks Mr. Opposition Leader. Let’s not forget most of Bermuda’s intellectual capital has been imported and ‘real Bermudians’ have reaped the benefits. Furthermore, if you found yourself in the position that many PRC holders find themselves in today, you’d beg for sympathy and allowance to gain status. Perspective young man, perspective.

  5. swing voter says:

Pleeeeezzzzzz spare me…..I’ve changed the station

  6. Triangle Drifter says:

Tried to listen. Gave up. What a load of blah, blah, blah! All kinds of pie in the sky money, which we don’t have thanks to the PLP, should be spent on this, that or the other thing. Good grief. The MPs are earning their money today just putting up with it all.

  7. inna says:

“The “attempt to grant status is modern day wickedness against one’s own people” and “has nothing to do with economics, and everything to do with the political sorcery of solidifying one’s power by altering Bermuda’s voting base,” Opposition Leader Marc Bean said today [Nov 15] in the formal Reply to the Throne Speech.”

mate, this statement is so ironic it is actually quite sickening. political sorcery of solidifying ones power by alterting Bermuda’s voting base should be ringing a few bells mr bean. maybe dr brown might be the better person to speak to re that!

we are in the situation we are in, financially, socially and economically because of the PLP’s sorcery of hiring, hiring, hiring, throwing parties, massive overruns, all to… you got it! solidify their base! my how the pot calling the kettle black has never been so ironic!

    • Mike Hind says:

“It’s ok when we do it.”

The more they talk, the more I am assured that this is, in fact, the SOLE message of the PLP.

  8. haha says:

“The “attempt to grant status is modern day wickedness against one’s own people” and “has nothing to do with economics, and everything to do with the political sorcery of solidifying one’s power by altering Bermuda’s voting base”

Yeah because the OBA are really trying to alter the voting base, shut up already u loser. Everything dat comes out ya mouth is B$!

PLP AND IT’S SUPPORTERS: THIS IS NOT A COMPETITION SO STOP TREATING IT LIKE ONE!

  9. Bermuda Male says:

Wow. Mr. Bean your threat of violence in your speech shows me the more things change….

Scary that is actually being espoused by a so called “leader.”

    • Kareem says:

Easy Marc, I was just getting to like you then you spewed this speech, and what do you mean “our people” I hope you mean all Bermudians, and not people who look like me and you.. lets come together and fix this mess together..

      • Mazumbo says:

Kareem don’t get scared ya for-fathers spoke worse and went through worse, you better know ya History!

        • Mike Hind says:

          More “Your forefathers” stuff?

          Seriously?

And since when has what someone else said and “History” made it ok to behave badly?

Or is this just more of your usual “It’s ok when we do it”?

          • Mazumbo says:

Yaaawwnn, this is child’s play compared to the House Of Commons

            • Mike Hind says:

We’re not in the House of Commons and we don’t have a Speaker to reprimand you when you step out of line.

And we’re not talking about white privilege. You obviously don’t understand the concept, if this is what you think it means.

          • Mazumbo says:

Seriously? Obviously you are naive to the fact that subtle undeserved white privilege is not an act of behaving badly.LMAO

            • Mike Hind says:

Who said is wasn’t? You’re moving the goalposts again.

              Try a little honesty.

        • Esther Elaine Kelly says:

@mazumbo:Did you pass Post Office 101?

    • Concerned says:

He gotta do what he is told remember who he is under do or else say or else don’t be a leader be a follower

  10. S Smith says:

Well done PLP. You have learned from your defeat.

  11. Always Watching says:

Damn that war room must have been filled with smoke last night.nicely done.

  12. Bermuda Male says:

    So other than threats of violence from a political leader (which by the way damages our international reputation far more than any of Mr. Bean’s claims) the PLP offered four solutions to Bermuda’s issues;

    - infrastructure development requires capital funds, which as well all know are scarce at this time, and is only temporary employment for the construction sector

    - the referendum is scheduled to take place within the first three months of 2014, so nothing new really

    - the BLDC things sounds interesting, but much more information is required

    - doubling which tax relief?

Last week the PLP said the Throne Speech was devoid of substance and was shocking and disappointing, a week later the same individuals highlight how they agree with the vast majority of the suggestions, offer 3 different solutions, and threaten violence against one proposal.

New PLP seems like the old PLP…

    • Mazumbo says:

      O-oligarchy B-born A-again

      • Mike Hind says:

Yeah. You’ve said that a few times before.

        It’s still nonsense.

        • Mazumbo says:

Opinions are like farts everyone makes them and think theirs don’t stink. So your entitled it!

          • Mike Hind says:

Oh, no… it’s not an opinion, it’s quantifiably incorrect, as are most things you say.

      • Esther Elaine Kelly says:

@Mazumbo: every time you and Betty Trump blog you drive more and more people into the OBA camp. You two are doing really well for the OBA. And for this on behalf of the OBA I say thank you. Keep up the good working.

  13. Kangoocar says:

More hot air from marc, I guess he was napping when it was announced that the government revenues are in fact up over lthe lasts rein of terror year (2012) of the plp??? This reply proves the plp still don’t understand economics!! The policies of the OBA are a direct result of this increase, payroll tax was up just over 2%, maybe marc can explain how this could have happened if there was not more people paying into it???
It is also obvious that he still does not understand the fact that there simply is not enough Bermudians living and working here to sustain ourselves, on this path we are running out of revenue as opposed to gaining revenue, the only way to repair this is outside MONEY coming in!!!! We need wealthy foreigners moving in and creating employment, there is no other way!!! Instead all marc and the plp are worried about is their voter base, once again they have proven ithat it is all about them first and all about the welfare of all of Bermuda 2nd!!!!

  14. Dr. Brown’s clone thats all i can say!

    • Mazumbo says:

Not surprised of your comment ,colonial idealist cant handle strong black leadership ,that’s been proven in Bermuda’s History ,just in case someone wants EVIDENCE! LMAO

      • Hmmm says:

It’s YOU that can’t handle strong Black leadership Mazumbo.

      • Mike Hind says:

Not surprised at yours. Racist demagogues can’t handle things like truth or reality and scoff at the concept of backing up their claims.

But, since you brought it up, can you show any sort of evidence that anyone here is a colonial idealist? Or that Dr. Brown or Mr. Bean are strong leaders? Because – given where we’re at after Dr. Browns leadership – Bermuda’s History proves different from what you’re claiming…

        • jt says:

To be fair – we should also ask for evidence that Mr. Bean is under thumb of Dr. Brown. That is an unsubstantiated claim.

          • Mike Hind says:

Considering he said “Dr. Brown’s clone thats all i can say!” and not that he’s under the thumb of Dr. Brown…
            Not really.

Saying that he’s a clone of Dr. Brown indicates that he believes them to be very similar in style, motives, etc.

He’s obviously not saying he’s LITERALLY a clone of Dr. Brown, as that’s not a real thing.

Now, maybe an argument could be made for someone asking “In what way?”, but he didn’t actually make a claim.

            • Mazumbo says:

I would say most Eurocentric elite and their associates (without sounding like a racist LMAO) which are off shoots of the Old Front Street- Forty Thieves lineage would be good contenders for colonial idealist, I stand to be corrected!

              • Mike Hind says:

And you have proof that this person is… how?

(And how can you not sound racist when you base your negative opinion solely on race? That’s the definition… How do you not know this?)

              • Mike Hind says:

Yet another one of “Mazumbo” running away when he can’t answer a question.

                Pathetic.

      • Sandy Bottom says:

When you talk about ‘strong black leadership’, that’s Mr Cannonier, right?

        • Mazumbo says:

Not really, strong black leaders go against the status quo of appeasing the Hierarchy compared to being a puppet house n*****!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • Funny says:

Wow. You really hate white people huh?

            • Sandy Bottom says:

He also hates other black people who don’t hate white people. He’s an absolute scum racist.

          • Mike Hind says:

There it is. Exposing himself as the racist he is by using racist epithets.

Your motivations are crystal clear now.

      • Esther Elaine Kelly says:

@ Mazumbo: Marc Bean does not represent strong black leadership. I see an immature 40 year old man whose hatred can only serve to destroy Bermuda’s social fabric. He acts like a rude spoilt brat who cannot have its own way. I have noticed how much more bitter he has become since the PLP lost the election. I wonder why?

  15. Victor says:

The Godfather has spoken through his Capo.

  16. AKA A Bermudian says:

you had gained a bit of respect and now have shown your trues colors again and have now lost ALL respect I had. That is a disgraceful and disrespectful ( to ALL Bermudians) speech. Still trying to divide to conquer. In case you don’t know there is nothing bin the kitty to waste, you lot did that already.

  17. It only hurts when I breathe................. says:

I know it has been asked many times and perhaps even answered once or twice but you have to wonder EXACTLY WHAT PLANET IS THE PLP ON???

It is surely not of this world and once again they show (without meaning to) their underbelly which is full of vile spew and very little else!

    Really Marc ????
Helllllllooooooo!!!! – is anybody home at Alaska Central?

  18. Verbal Kint says:

I’m sorry, but I missed the supposed “threat of violence”. Someone help me out here.

  19. Family Man says:

There’s a lot of Black magic imagery in that speech.

    • Mazumbo says:

      So what’s White magic?????????????

      • Come Correct says:

        You doing a disappearing act.

      • Esther Elaine Kelly says:

Go away Mazumbo!!! Shhhoossh! No wonder you failed Post Office 101 – 40 times in a row!! Too busy living in the dark ages.People like you help me to see the importance of transcending. Education helps. But then again how would you know? You could not even pass Post Office 101. Try reading the right material and forget about that black power stuff. That time gas long gone. How else do you think you managed to get a job in the Post Office?

        • Mazumbo says:

Its people like you who want to shy away from the truth and bury your head in the sand. Your problem is trying to transcend without confronting the problem which is a process. Education does not eradicate peoples mindset the world is full of educated fools with no common sense, and the material I read you probably would not be able to comprehend or understand. You want me to forget about the black power stuff in a white power society, what world are you living in. Your eccentric !

          • Mike Hind says:

When you start using some truth, we might be getting somewhere.
Sadly, you use lies and racism to promote your cause and, sadly, history has proved that this isn’t the way.

  20. Islander says:

…..modern day wickedness against one’s own people” and “has nothing to do with economics, and everything to do with the political sorcery of solidifying one’s power by altering Bermuda’s voting base,”

Wasn’t this the PLP Motto for the last how many years and I don’t think the kettle has changed it’s color

Where is the Leader who said there wouldn’t be name calling and all the rest… Must be having Saturday morning meetings with Rolfe.

  21. Story Teller says:

    Mr. Bean says:

“The PLP will not allow it. It is a red line that will not be crossed, lest the forgetful and arrogant be brought into remembrance of the modern political history of this country, and the lessons that should have been learned at that time. This is not a threat, but it must be accepted as a serious warning.”

    and then states:

“We were not meant to engage in threats and intimidation of people because they don’t share our points of view…”

A strong leader should have the natural ability to inspire instead of hinting at encouraging violence towards others that he doesn’t agree with. How does he think that such rhetoric will inspire foreign investment to our shores. If I was a potential investor and read that I would say hell no to placing my money into a place whose leaders freely encourage violence.

I was truly inspired by his PLP banquet speech a few weeks back and said that is a PLP leader I could vote for. Fool me once I guess…

  22. Silence Do Good says:

    Mr. Bean,
If the previous government did not squander Bermuda from the black to the red then all of the protectionism government put in place would be fine. Reality check, Bermuda cannot survive without foreign capital and investment. The only thing we have to sell is our land and status to keep moving forward. Even with that we are competing with other countries where the cost of living isn’t so dare. If you are happy with more Bermudians unemployed and more foreign capital leaving our shores so that we can sit around and watch each other with long empty arms, then I will never vote for your party again. Get some real ideas on turning the economy around without the whole sale of Bermuda and I may agree with you. At this point if you want things to change quickly we do not have many other options. I am not in favour of the ideas of selling Bermuda but I like to have a roof over my head and food on the table.

  23. Familiar says:

Well, that was an informative read.

I’m pretty much over giving Mr. Bean a chance to lead the PLP into a new day, because what I read was the same old PLP with more talk than doing, veiled threats and divisiveness.

Kudos, though, for the obvious nod to Mr. Ewart Brown’s continued involvement in the running of the party.

  24. Concerned Citizen says:

Opp leader Bean gave an excellent speech today. No threats, just the truth. You Oba folk hate when a leader shows strength and courage. And his warning is correct. Maybe some of you folks are just to young to remember, but what Bean says is serious. Underestimate or dismiss his words if you like. The rest of the speech reveals that the PLP is focused on all Bermudians. I know some folks who benefit first from foreign money, so I expect you folk to demonize the PLP leader. Haha! Oba time will be short!

    • Mike Hind says:

Nah. He just regurgitated the same tired talking points as always, regardless of whether they’re true or not.

It’s just the same old song…

    • Kangoocar says:

You are the classic dumbed down plp voter!! Let me help you understand economics, without foreign money you will have NO money and starve to death!! My god, you simpletons get worst by the minute??? Yah you keep supporting that pathetic party and see how that works out for you!!!

    • Reas0n says:

“the PLP is focused on all Bermudians”

… Aaand there’s your problem. Focusing on a sector of Bermuda that really generates nothing is not going to fix a sinking economy.

Maybe you should be less concerned with “strong and courageous” speeches and try to see the bigger picture.

    • AKA A Bermudian says:

      ewart in the background

    • Sandy Bottom says:

Like you demonize people who you think might be foreigners?

    • Familiar says:

If Mr. Bean were courageous, he wouldn’t be towing the same old party line and would instead be forging ahead as was suggested he might in some previous speeches of his.

Sometimes I find myself somewhat sympathetic as it seems he keeps being reined in by those who are actually in control of the party.

    • Esther Elaine Kelly says:

@Concerned Citizen: lay off the kool aid – try some orange juice and then read the first two pages of Marc Bean’s response.

  25. Navin R. Johnson says:

Is there anyone in Bermuda more irrelevant than Bean? Let’s hear him when the discussion to decriminalize weed comes up

    • Sandy Bottom says:

He has to take instructions from the real PLP leaders on what to say about it. We all know what he wants to make weed as widely available as possible.

  26. Handbag Basher says:

Bean, you DONT scare me or anyone else in this Democratic Society.
Try to change it if you dare!

  27. For real says:

Mr. Bean you set back as leader of the white hill club and as a member of the PLP and let your party tear down a part of history to many who lived in the white hill area and now they have nothing,so how can you fix our country when you can’t save your own club

  28. Really says:

I used to think I was a prophet and smart and getting guidance from wherever then I stopped smoking weed !

  29. navin johnson says:

at least 5 Rastas did not like my comment

  30. Watching says:

Its so much hate on the blogs from OBA supporters. You people are very hateful. You all will be the reason your party doesn’t win the next election. People may not post on the blogs but they sure are reading and discussing the hate.

    • jt says:

March Bean used “sorcery”, “wickedness” and “demonic” to describe the OBA……..you believe those are not hateful type terms to use? They are not words used by professionals to critique performance, they are designed with one purpose in mind – as is the use of the term “our people” instead of using “Bermudians”.

      • Esther Elaine Kelly says:

@jt: I agree. You see the likes of Marc Bean, Mazumbo and others who think just like them have had the shackles removed from their feet and hands. But the shackles on their brains remain.
The best remedy to the injustice our forefathers faced is education. When we educate ourselves we can transcend most anything. To our young black males – pull your pants up! Put your guns down and stop using drugs. To our young black women respect yourselves, stop settling for less than you deserve. Educate yourselves. Our foreparents endured the struggle so that we won’t have to live like they were forced to. Let’s stop undoing everything they have done to ensure our freedom.

    • Mike Hind says:

Hilarious. Not a single mention of the hate that “Mazumbo” is posting.
Why is that? Do you agree with him?

    • Sandy Bottom says:

What about the racist comments by alvin Williams? You’re fine with that I take it.

And let me know which of my posts was ‘hateful’.

    • Mike Hind says:

      As always…

“It’s ok when we do it”

  31. swing voter says:

The Tea Party has Cruz, Palin, and Ryan…the PLP has Rolf, Bean, and Burt. both teams share ideals with a common mission….take the government down along with the country by any means necessary….as Sting put it ‘a ship of fools sailing oooooonnnn.’ NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN PLP

  32. Funny says:

There’s no mention about how to manage our skyrocketing hearth are costs while the rest of the initiatives will consider a considerable cash layout of cash that we just don’t have. What about addressing Government inefficiency? In his banquet speech he noted the need to cut Government expenses, but this week he is advocating to beef up the civil service even further.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some good ideas just no substance as to how they can be achieved. A brief mention at the end of a RAGE commission isn’t enough. Adding new revenue sources takes time and effort and thus does Mr. Bean really believe that his massive list of promises can be reached with the Government finances in their current form?

And I just don’t understand how Mr Bean can claim that they support an overwhelming majority of the Government’s Throne Speech initiatives and bills passed under their tenure so far, but then accuse them of being this, that and the other. Logic should dictate that if you support the majority of their actions then they can’t be as bad as you constantly claim them to be. If they are so deceitful, underhanded and whatever Mr. Bean and his cohorts label them as being, then one would think they would be virtually against all their policies and wouldn’t want to be viewed as supporting any of their actions. And you definitely would not want to work with them either and seek collaboration on such terrible policies.

But as they say, Bermuda is Another World. Good luck to all Bermudians, because after reading the above (speech and comments below) along with the SAGE report it will be either our unbridled hate or dire financial position that will finally sink the Isle of Devils.

    • godson says:

That is Politics…The truth is that BOTH parties have done good and bad so far…Instead of focusing on what works, they would rather focus on verbal gun-slinging. Clearly, both parties have brainwashed SOME folk into the verbal ignorance. Some of these comments go way off track, and seem like deep hatred spewed into words. WE NEED TO BALANCE the OBA’s idea of attracting the $ to keep us going, AND the PLP’s idea of helping the grassroots Bermudian. WE used to do it through Tourism, then IB came and added a bonus to our Island. We focused more on IB, because is was long term investment, now we are scraping to keep that comittment. In some ways we have made ourselves hostages in our own land. IF we go back to FOCUSING on one pillar of our economy, then maybe we can save $ trying to attract the other. Right now, we can’t afford to “serve two masters”.-peace

    • Kangoocar says:

Harry Vierra, UBP MP, 30 yrs ago stated the following ” trying to get the plp to commit to anything, is like trying to nail jello to a wall, it can’t be done” it amazes me that 30 yrs later those words are just as true today!!!!

  33. Alvin Williams says:

The opposition reply to the throne speech is right on the money. How else do you describe the policies of this anti-Bermudian one term OBA government whose clear aim is to create a Bermuda without the Bermudian; but to describe it as wicked. The aim is to create another Cayman Island where the foreign worker now out number the native Cayman islander and now is in position to dominate the politics of the country with the assistance
of their British Kith and kin of course. The anti-Bermudian one term OBA government just like it’s forefather the former UBP government of No. wishes to return to the days of race base immigration policies in their effort to further whiten Bermuda as a counter the existence of Bermuda’s black majority. No matter how much talk is given to we must all act together; the clear evidence is there for all to see and that is that the herd mentality with regard to white voting patterns will persists.

    • Sandy Bottom says:

Man, you are an absolute out and out racist bigot. You just love doing the hate speech thing don’t you.

    • Sandy Bottom says:

Alvin, you comment that they’re trying to “whiten Bermuda as a counter to Bermuda’s black majority”.

Explain to me how that’s different from the guy standing on the lawn saying “there goes the neighbourhood” when black families move in?

Aren’t you really just the same as the guy on the lawn?

    • Kangoocar says:

Alvin, I just wanted to update you on what has been going on in this world since the 1960s that you are still living in!!! Communism has all but disappeared, even Eastern Germany collapsed, and socialism has failed everywhere also, in the the 1970′s Russia and the US stopped landing on the moon and the US went on and built an aircraft that looks like a plane that was flown into space and returned to be able to be used again!!! Also since the 1960s the last of the racially oppressive governments “South Africa” was thrown out of power and the world now has been moving on ever since!! Moving on to the 21st century, most capitalistic ( non socialist ) countries have realized that immigration is much needed and a good thing!! Most countries economies have become global and those countries that continue to not joini are heading straight into a disaster situation for its citizens!!!! In 1998 your plp was elected to govern Bermuda and the test results are in, this may come as a shock to you but their final grade was an F, their policies and way of thinking failed us all miserable!!!!!
Who would have thought all of that would happen since the 1960s????? Hope this helps you alvin!!!!!!

      • Kangoocar says:

Sorry alvin, I forgot to also inform you that after the plp made a mess of our beloved Island, The majority of Bermudians woke up on Dec 17th, 2012 and elected a responsible government ( OBA ) to clean up the mess by your plp !!! So far with all the hidden obstacles they have had to face, they have been doing a pretty good job!!!!

    • Mike Hind says:

Here he goes again… Babbling nonsense so he can get his “anti-Bermudian one term blah blah blah” in.
No reality involved, just pathetic party politics.

      It’s sad.

    • jt says:

Time will tell, but I ssupect we will look back and view the PLP’s last 8 years as anti-Bermudian, if it’s not fair to do so already.

    • Say Say Say says:

Alvin: The Cayman’s is a mosquito ridden swamp. They need all the people they can get – even if they are expats. In addition, giving people who were born here status is not anti Bermudian and shouldn’t be even in your mind. It is fair and just. Some of those kids may even look like you Alvin. What do you say to that?

  34. godson says:

I don’t think its about “black and white anymore”…I think its about the “haves” and “have nots”…there are some black people in Bermuda who are “sitting pretty”, and there are some white folk who are “taking licks”…. Sometimes race takes a back seat in Politricks…

  35. Michael Tucker says:

Such a speech is well deserved of the attention I see it has gotten thus far.Mr Bean is to be commanded for the output of such words and further more if he stands by them through and through.Bermuda does to have history and it is based on race it’s human race,The days of saying its ok without looking into a matter are to be untold in the mouths of young Bermuda society. We people really need to consider we’re change can take us,anti social behaviors often lead to dismantling and chaos.A simple day in the park with family and friends is a blessing to enjoy and to reflect on appreciated opportunity with the smile of humbled progress is a good thing for Bermuda ,I think. To think that someone would want to highlight demonizing as the stance of order rather than admit trouble has a definition.

  36. Alvin Williams says:

Well it was Brazilian football legend Pele who once stated ‘Money whiten’ that is all I am going to say on the existence of black million dollar holders and any other such people of colour who have wealth. However to comment on this so-called post racial era; the day I see a white man standing on the same picket line as myself; the day I see a white man who supported labour in England remains a supporter of labour in Bermuda; than I will say it’s not about race; it’s about the haves and the have not.

    • Bermuda Male says:

S if a black person is wealthy and successful he isn’t really black?

      Thought stereotyping was bad?

    • Kangoocar says:

Alvin, you are a sad individual!!! Thankfully your thoughts and opinions mean little in this world!!! You have actually sunk to a level I never thought even you could get too, you are now saying that black people should remain poor??? Why don’t you say that to EB and a few other plp higher uppers ????

    • Mike Hind says:

      Sickening.
The level of hatred is disturbing.

  37. Ringmaster says:

Marc Bean has merely confirmed that it is business as usual within the PLP. He may be trying to portray a new, refreshing and up to date PLP leadership style but it is very clear that he is merely a puppet of the old guard. Step out of line and he is history. Harry Potter politics is what caused the PLP to lose the last election, and will hopefully mean the PLP, until it really does modernize, will never be a Government again. They could have done so much good in the last 14 years but chose instead to look after and enrich a few within their inner circle. The majority of their voter base will be suffering from those actions for many, many years.

  38. Realist says:

Foreign investment will not come here if there is any chance of the PLP regaining the govt.

  39. Michael Tucker says:

It seems to me that both parties have a watchtower that has its origins based on facts . I don’t think it’s a silver bullet syndrome that can heal this province, education is what we are here coping with. How can we sit here as fruit of this blooming tree and dare to clone and reap and disregard its roots? The Bermuda of yesteryear endured comment of its hospitable ways because we use to see the benefit in it. Politicians are people who have families and I’m sure they must enjoy looking back at times through their fore parents views with pride, unless it’s a barbaric past were humans use to walk as apes or some creature who use to stare at their reflection in the waters of the river and wish they could walk upright.International Business can operate outside of this country and still reap the rewards of its registry thanks to technology so who’s face is in house holds little water, but policy and the opportunities to it is where politics has it’s hold.

  40. Alvin Williams says:

I don’t need your help Kangoocar; but you need help your time line goes further back than that which you spoke of; for you are a relic of the feudal age dreaming of the return of your rule and power. All of which will be for nought. Mike Hinds I know you; you are an old private just like your ancestors and you dream of the days of plunder and the slave trade. But I must tell you I have emerge from a bottomless pit; from the confines of a slave ship. I refuse to be a European clone; I am a black man with a free black mind and therefore we have nothing in common.

    • Mike Hind says:

Oh, you know me, do you?

What makes you say that? Could it be the colour of my skin?

You know nothing. You should be ashamed of yourself, spreading lies like this.

You are a liar and a fraud and a hate monger.

For your information, because you have shown your ignorance, both my grandfathers were grocers. The British side, all the way back, were poor.
As for “dreaming of the days of plunder and slave trade”? There isn’t an Irishman in the islands that dreams of those days.

Do some research. If you’re going to try to make up stories about people, you should at least base them in reality.

But you don’t care about that, do you? You just want to spread your racist message because you’re upset that your party lost the last election, don’t you? How pathetic is that?

    • Sandy Bottom says:

You’re like a guy in the street yelling at clouds Alvin.

    • Kangoocar says:

Free mind alvin?????? Your mind is not free at all, you are trapped in it!!!! It is your type of thinking that keeps the races divided in this island!!!! You are a sick individual, but sadly there is more like you in this island, Bermuda will be much better off the day Alvin’s type of thinking is gone!!!!!

    • Mike Hind says:

      Note the silence.
This is a running theme with racists like Mr. Williams (Who, by the way, if he’s reading, should note that I got his name right. It’s really not difficult.)… They post these horrible, false things – outright lies – and then run away when called on them.

Cowards. Not one of them have the courage of their convictions.

  41. Silence Do Good says:

    Mr. Williams,

Please stop. Europeans did not go into the heart of Africa and steal our brothers and sister away to a new land. They provided the opprotunity for our own race to sell us into slavery. Like everything regardless of the situation if the opprotunity exist for someone to do better than someone else: the crooks, cheats, liars and general scum of society will line up first to take advantage of an opprotunity to serve their best interest, without a second thought for their fellow man. Black, white, yellow or green the haves will have on the backs of the have nots. Both Bermuda political parties are no different and anyone who votes party politricks supports the crazy making of unstable policies of protectionism verses capitalism.

  42. Alvin Williams says:

I divide the races? your ancestors should have solve this racial question before I was born; But no you kept it going even after slavery was suppose to have ended. So here we are today in my life time facing the legacy and consequences of those times. It is true that some of my African ancestors sold my ancestors into in to the hands of European and I might add Arab slavers. But here is what an African king in Ghana said to my travel group
when I visited my ancestral home land Africa; ‘It sadden him to look into our faces; African/Bermudians and African/Americans; for it reminded him what a monstrous crime it was for his ancestors to have sold their brothers and sisters into slavery; although this was often done in a time of war and another tribal group lost that conflict were fated to suffer the consequences of that lost. And in another Africa country I visited; Cote D’ Ivoire once know as the Ivory Coast and in discussions with two professors from a university who have come to discuss this question of African collaboration with the European and Arab slavers. They compared it to the dictators and African traitors who
sold out their countries resources and peoples to former colonial rulers
for their own selfish reasons in post colonial Africa. But I ask this question; why is it that the European nations of southern Europe are a little darker than their northern European counterparts? Is is because of the non-white invasions of Europe from north Africa? When Hannibal march across Europe on his way to the gates of Rome; he recruited an army made up of the tribes of Europeans to conquer other Europeans. Did not the English sell Irishmen and women into slavery. There where British held Irish slaves in the earliest settlement of north America and there were Irish slaves in Bermuda. When it comes to collaboration there is the example of the Vichy French who sold out their country to the Nazis during world war two. So It seem that after all we are all alive.

    • Mike Hind says:

Blaming everyone in a racial group for the actions of a section is racism. Plain and simple.
Look at the first section… It’s “your ancestors” (which is false, of course) and then, instantly, “you kept it going…”

This kind of hate has no place in our country.

    • Mike Hind says:

Mr. Williams, would you care to address the fact that you lied in your post about me? Or are you going to let those lies stand?

    • Suzie Quattro says:

Alvin, what the hell are you talking about. What a load of racist claptrap.

  43. Bermuda Male says:

Well one thing is for sure, your racial hatred, rhetoric and general overall approach to race relations surely don’t assist in creating in a unified demographic. It actually does the opposite and hence the claim that people such as yourself and others who retain such mindsets do nothing but divide the races is absolutely correct. You are simply a liability to Bermuda and the human race in general due to the hate you espouse and promote on a daily basis.

  44. Alvin Williams says:

When you start talking about creating a Bermudian nation that is when our children and thier children will endeavour to make the prospect of real unity a reality for this country. but until than we have nothing in common.

    • Bermuda Male says:

I am very happy to know that I have nothing in common with a bigot such as yourself. Gives me hope for my future.
