18000 Customers Lose Power After Engine Fault

November 11, 2013

[Updated:] Some 18,000 customers woke up this holiday morning [Nov 11] to find they were out of power, after an engine fault triggered a load shed. BELCO moved into action, and power was restored a short while later.

A BELCO spokesperson said, “At approximately 8:25am, an engine fault triggered a load shed, which affected some 4000 customers on multiple circuits.

“The system is designed to shed load by shutting down circuits to protect itself. Control engineers in BELCO’s Operations Centre restored power to all circuits by approximately 8:45 am. Investigation of the event is ongoing.”

Update 11.39am: BELCO said the “early estimate by Dispatch was approximately 4,000 customers affected; the Control Engineer has confirmed that the total was actually about 18,000 customers affected.”

Tried calling Belco to report my outage and got a recorded message saying: ” the number you have called is not in service”. I called both of their numbers. I then called the Police who told me, they had been trying to call Belco to no avail and one of their stations had lost power. Needless to say, I became very concerned.
