Today: Come & Jam for Wendell “Shine” Hayward

November 11, 2013

The Somerset Cricket Club Field will play host to the unique “Come and Jam for Shine” hip-hop show today [Nov 11], with all proceeds going to support a local musician in trouble. The event will feature artists including Marvo, Lil JJ, B-Boy, Fire, Gina Love Band, Sybil and many more.

The concert comes in response to the closing of “Shine’s House of Music” after Mr. Hayward, one of Bermuda’s most well known musicians, fell some $50,000 behind on the rent at his Reid Street location.

Despite a massive outpouring of support which saw around $14,000 donated following a drive on the the  Sherri Simmons show onMagic 102 radio station, the jazz club was unable to meet its obligations and closed its doors this past Friday.

Carol Lynn Smith said, “Dexter Flood and I are compelled to help well-known musician Wendell “Shine” Hayward. Shine is in serious financial difficulty, owing over fifty thousand dollars [$50,000], to his landlord and creditors for his “Shine’s House of Music Entertainment Club.

“As passionate and long time live music lovers, Dexter and I, are planning a benefit concert on November 11th at Somerset Cricket Club. We want to assist Shine in making his creditors whole. This cannot happen without your help.”

Tickets will be sold at gate for $20. To purchase tickets or for more information, contact Carol at Smith 236-9318, Gina Davis at 704-5683 and Fudge 292-5606.

  1. Confused says:

They should come together for Sandys 360. Where are the priorities . A bar before a community center . Get it right Bermuda .

    • Frank says:

      You are. So. Right

      • Colonial Greetings says:

And the bar has already closed its’ doors. What is this saving?

        • Sandy Bottom says:

I agree. I’d much rather help Sandy’s 360 over propping up a failed bar.

    • Tricks are for Kids says:

Well maybe if someone would organise an event like Shines friends have done that would be possible. ….ever since funds have been rsised for Shine certain people of the community have had an issue with it……Shine has not put on any of the events himself nor has he asked for assistance it has been GIVEN to him….people may say that his business failure was due to his lack of business sense and mis management of funds well the same thing can be said abiut the 2 million that was allocated to Sandys 360 and hasnt fully been accounted for as yet….
It is to my understanding however that there are fundraising efforts being put in place for Sandys 360….be patient instead of throwing stones….

    • Mike Hind says:

You don’t get to tell people where they should donate.
If you don’t think Shine deserves this, then don’t support it.
If you think there are more worthy causes, then go for it and help them out.

But to tut-tut someone for doing something nice and good for someone else?

      Come on.

  2. Hurricane says:

Confused & stupid you are sounding.

This is not to support a bar over a community centre. There is no more bar in question here, the coming together is to help the former bar owner out of financial debt. Stay away (no doubt you will) if you don’t wish to help. As for the community centre, this is not as simple. The objective here is to keep the community centre open as oppose to just paying off a debt. A study needs to be conducted on how they are to move forward without these financial challenges.

  3. Listening to music says:

No doubt you both are working diligently for Sandys 360. I am surprised you have the time to worry about the positive that some are doing for a man who has contributed much to young musicians. Keep in your corner and worry about what you choose to support.

  4. Malachi says:

I would suggest that if you have $20.00 to spare it would be better spent on food for the needy.

    • Mike Hind says:

I would suggest that you should spend your money where you want and not think you have the right to tell others where to spend it.

  5. Hurricane says:

Thanks, but no thanks, Malachi but it’s not for you to decide where my $20 would be better spent. Spend your however you like. Some of us choose to help this cause AND give to the needy.

  6. Feeling charitable says:

I am giving to the Salvation Army and The Sunshine League!

    • Mike Hind says:

Good for you! Very happy for you.

What does this have to do with the story?

  7. Malachi says:

My deepest apologies to anyone who thought I was telling them how they should spend their money.

Call me old fashioned, but in these hard economic times, when hundreds of people are suffering through no fault of their own, it just seems odd to me that bailing someone out of a self-inflicted financial hole is a priority.
Mr. Hayward was behind in his rent more than a year ago, by several months. So instead of closing down, he incurs an additional year of arrears! And somehow, his friends seem to think the public should come to his rescue.

I repeat, I’m not telling anyone how to spend their money, but I guess we live in a different world these days, because in my day, Mr. Hayward would not get a penny as long as there were people without food.

Just my opinion – NOT ADVICE!

    • Mike Hind says:

Here’s where you’re wrong. His friends don’t think the public should come to his help. They’re coming to his help and letting people know that, should they want to, they can, too. No one is demanding money from any one, nor are they expecting anything from anyone that doesn’t want to help.

      But here’s the thing…
How is your tut-tutting making anything better?

  8. Hurricane says:

I don’t doubt your apology is sincere, Malachi, but you still seem to be missing a point here.

Despite Mr. Hayward’s bad business decisions ( and there were obviously some made), a few of his friends think enough of him that they wanted to help him out. They pulled together these entertainers for those members of the public to go out and enjoy for a price. Nothing uncommon about that, it’s done all the time. And nowhere did I read in the flyer that that “the public should come to his rescue”. Life is about individual choices and the members of the public here would either make the choice to attend or not.

Stop acting like a gun was held to your head and you were threathened to attend. That was not the case and choice not to attend is to be respected.

    Just my opinion

  9. Ruthless says:

I am just wondering how come this wasn’t a problem at $10,000, $20,000 or even $30,000. Was he ever gonna stop or was he made to stop only after possible court proceedings!!! Just saying. Also is the other place by Berkeley Institute doing okay or is that gonna close too? I don’t have a problem with people supporting him but just have these questions!!!!

  10. bermudian says:

    Man this is kindergarten.

  11. Malachi says:

@Mike Hind, the above flyer does read “come and Jam for shine”, so somebody IS asking!

@Hurricane, Not sure why you think I feel a gun is being held to my head. Like many, I simply use this forum to observe and state an opinion, and I try not to jump to conclusions about people I don’t know – even when it is difficult not to do so.

    • Mike Hind says:

This is not worth arguing semantics over.

No one is forcing you to donate and you saying that people should donate elsewhere – as if this wasn’t worthy enough of a cause – was out of line.

  12. Malachi says:

    My last words Mike:

“In the OPINIONS of some of us, yes, some causes are more worthy than others.”

    Have a good evening Mike!

  13. Hurricane says:

It’s all good Malachi. Great to have this forum to express ourselves. And good to have dialogue with people like yourself.

  14. Nodolt says:

Writers get to create titles. Just because the headline says “for” does not mean they meant for. They could have chosen “with” whatever.
I went and spent my money on darn good entertainment. Regardless of what organization benefitted.

    • Bernews says:

Thanks for your comment, but if you note the title was taken directly from the poster which says “Come and Jam For Shine”.

There was no deep hidden meaning to the title or article, was just a little promo for the event!
