Ship Diverts Due To Crew Member’s Appendicitis

A diverted to Bermuda early this morning [Dec 31] to drop off a crew member with suspected appendicitis.

Yesterday afternoon the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre received a satellite telephone call received from the Captain of the LNG carrier Tessa Kosan, which was located 169 nautical miles southwest of Bermuda.

The ship was traveling from Houston to Morocco, and requested evacuation of a crew member suffering severe abdominal pains. The ship diverted to Bermuda while receiving advice from medical personnel in the Philippines.

The Tessa Kosan arrived off the east end of Bermuda at 1am this morning and following examination by a local doctor, the 30 year old male Filipino national was transferred to Ordnance Island by the pilot boat St David. He was then taken by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with suspected appendicitis.
