David Cox Re-Sentenced To Minimum Of 25 Yrs

January 16, 2014

David-Cox-aviDavid Cox was today [Jan 16] re-sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years for the murder of 47-year-old Raymond Troy “Yankee” Rawlins.

This is a reduction from his original sentence of 38 years.

On August 9th 2010, Mr Rawlins was gunned down in the entrance of Spinning Wheel nightclub on Court Street. Cox was arrested shortly after, and charged with murder on August 25th 2010.

Cox was originally sentenced to life in prison in July 2011, with Judge ordering that he must serve a minimum of 38 years in prison before he can be considered for parole.

This sentence reduction follows after a ruling by the Privy Council in London, which stated that the laws in Bermuda do not allow a minimum sentence over 25 years for premeditated murder and 15 years for murder.

Cox is the latest murderer to have his sentence reduced under these guidelines. Ze Selassie was convicted of the murder of 14-year-old Rhiana Moore, while Jermaine Pearman was convicted of killing 23-year-old Shakeya DeRoza.

Selassie was initially sentenced to 35 years, while Jermaine Pearman was originally sentenced to 25 years.

However in October 2013, both men had their sentences reduced by the UK Privy Council, with Selassie’s sentence cut to 25 years before he is eligible for parole, while Pearman will be eligible after serving 15 years.
