Bermudian Heads From Hospital To The Catwalk

February 8, 2014

When Bermudian artist Tamicka “TeeJay” Johnson took a hiatus from her critically acclaimed web series Refracted Reflections to raise further funds for the project, an eight day hospital stay with two surgeries and four blood transfusions was not exactly what she had in mind.

But, despite circumstances that may have physically or emotionally devastated a less tenacious individual, Ms. Johnson has not only bounced back but appears to have catapulted to the next level in her artistic evolution.

Still suffering the effects of her illness and only a month after being released from the hospital, she was chosen as a feature model for the KMoment Productions “2014 A Classy Affair LGBT Calendar”.

The following month Ms. Johnson was chosen for The What is Butch? Movement Fashion Show hitting Atlanta on February 22nd.

They are the first national traveling fashion show movement to showcase dominant lesbians, masculine of center persons, queer, androgynous, and transmen bodied models on the runway with a show to call their own.

The What is Butch? Movement is focused on educating , liberating and redirecting misconceptions about the community by utilizing the universally understood language, fashion.

The focus of the show is to introduce these models and designers to a larger audience while showing mainstream markets the viability of these products not only to the LGBTQ community but to the masses.

If that isn’t enough Ms. Johnson’s series returns to filming on Feb 9th. It has been picked up by PNT TV Network, the number one Lesbian Entertainment website in the Caribbean and has been a consistent perform in their top 5 show of the week. In addition, Refracted Reflections is slated to be in the starting line up of Atlanta’s newest TV Network Color Spectrum TV.

Ms. Johnson has also recently been contacted by The Caribbean Writer [TCW] - an international, refereed, literary journal with a Caribbean focus  - about publishing her poetry, and a well known Atlanta producer has contacted her about producing a soundtrack for her series that will include some Bermudian artists that she has featured on her show.

What is her illness though? Might be good to know if you r asking people to donate to her care bills…

What is her illness? Well, after blood transfusions and two surgeries; it’s a safe bet it was not the flu.

      • TeeJay says:

I have some form of aggressive anemia which has caused a heart murmur and am under the care of a hematologist/oncologist undergoing testing for the cause or additional illness that caused my platelets to crash. I had surgery (and platelet transfusions)to find and fix an internal bleed which, as you can imagine, with the anemia was life threatening (and apparently caused a full body blood infection). $29,000 in medicine alone with over all bills heading towards $120,000. Thanks for the article Bernews; and thanks for asking.
