Deloitte’s DEEP Internship Program helps aspiring young Bermudians understand if they have what it takes to pursue a career in international business, with their DEEP [Deloitte Exclusive Experience Program] internships available to those interested in Accounting, Actuarial Science, Technology, Tax, Talent and Marketing. Students are hired from June through August in the area that aligns with the student’s major and interest.

Dalhousie student Chelsea Soares [pictured] is returning to Bermuda this summer for her third year as a DEEP intern – and will join Deloitte as a full time in September. She shares how the program has benefited her.

Ms. Soares said, “DEEP gave me an opportunity to see one of the major industries in Bermuda from “behind the scenes”. When you think of the accounting profession you often think of a someone crunching numbers – but during my internship, I interacted with all facets of Deloitte and learned that the accounting industry has a lot more to offer.

“DEEP interns receive hands on advice from professionals and work together in teams. One of my best experiences in DEEP was meeting other Bermudian students who have similar career goals to me and working alongside them on DEEP program projects.

“Working hard and developing a good reputation within internships has also helped my career – internships give you the opportunity to put yourself out there and be recognized. Students should understand and be aware that Bermuda’s economy has become very competitive. Internships are essential to any college student or non-college student.

“My advice for young Bermudians is to try to do a meaningful internship while you are in university. Take up majors that are in demand in Bermuda. That doesn’t mean it has to be business, but college students should network with professionals from various industries to find out where the best jobs are available. Look for internships that not only interest you but will also challenge you.

“The internship provides a great opportunity for networking and hands on experience. Students get a real taste of international business, as often go to client offices to complete different projects with Deloitte account teams. Each intern also receives coaching from a senior member of their team who will provide training and a solid knowledge base.

“Additionally, interns develop team-working skills by completing a group project that serves either a local charity or a Deloitte initiative. At the end of the internship, students present their project’s results to the leaders of Deloitte Bermuda. Students who show initiative are often invited back and ultimately employed as full time staff once their degrees have been completed.”

To apply for Deloitte’s DEEP internship, students should submit a completed application form together with a CV, college transcripts, proof of Bermudian citizenship and 2 character references to sarah.mayor@deloitte.bm by March 31, 2014. Application forms are available online.
