Over 80 Saltus Students & Staff To Shave Heads
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is getting set to hold its 13th annual event at the BAA gymnasium tomorrow [Mar 14] starting at 4.30pm, with over 80 Saltus Grammar School students and relatives set to participate in the fundraising effort earlier in the day.
A spokesperson said, “On Friday, March 14, for the eighth year in a row, Saltus Grammar School students and relatives will have their heads shaved to raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation [this year a percentage of these funds will go to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre].
“Over have 80 signed up, including relatives of students, one of whom is a Trustee and one a teacher. As of March 13, Saltus participants have already exceeded their goal of raising $120,000.
“In addition, Locks of Love will benefit as there will be several girls from Upper Primary and two from Secondary, along with two mothers, one teacher, and a sister from BHS who will be donating their hair to provide hair pieces for children with long term medically related hair loss. Of these, three are having their heads shaved as well.
Saltus students participate in last year’s St. Baldrick’s head shaving event:
“The schedule of events for Friday, March 14 at Saltus Grammar School will see the day get underway at 8.45am in the Upper Primary Hall where Upper Primary students and relatives, including Saltus Trustee Andy Pereira, will be having their heads shaved, plus some will be having their hair cut for Locks of Love. At 12.30pm in the Haygarth Gymnasium on the field level, 24 Secondary students, one dad, and one aunt will be having their heads shaved.
“Special overseas guest Susan Heard, Director of Partnerships for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, will be in Bermuda and will attend the events at Saltus on Friday. Susan Heard began volunteering and fundraising with St. Baldrick’s when her son David told her, “Science has failed me and that is why I’m going to die.’ He went on to say, “Mom, use your voice to change the fate of all the courageous kids still battling cancer.”
“In this past St. Baldricks’ Foundation grant cycle, there has been a variety of funding given to doctors looking at promising new therapies in neuroblastoma, the cancer that took David’s life. Susan said, “That is the progress David was hoping for and that is why my family continues to commit ourselves to fundraising for St. Baldrick’s.”
“In addition, there will be a number of other guests, including Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s Executive Director, Tara Soares, and BCHC’s Marketing and Fundraising Manager, Deborah Titterton Narraway, whose daughter is participating.
St. Baldrick’s BAA gymnasium event in 2013:
“In addition to the head shaving events on Friday, over 165 Upper Primary students made a donation to participate in a “Rainbow Loom Lunch” on Monday. Green bracelets made at the lunch will be sold for $1.00 on Friday, and funds raised from this, together with Upper Primary pre-ordered milk and popcorn sales, will also go to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Upper and Lower Primary students will have a Green Grub Day on Friday to raise additional funds, and Secondary students will donate $2.00 to view the event in the Gym.
“Many thanks to hairdressers from the following salons who are volunteering their time and expertise for this worthwhile cause: Salon Visage, The Cutting Room, Salon 27, Bang Bang Hair, and TK Hair. Thanks also to Saltus Trustee and parent, Mrs. Lisa Baumgartner, who organised the Upper Primary activities, and to Year 6 teacher Laurel Burgess [hairdressers] and Year 4 teacher Brittany Adams [Locks of Love] for their invaluable support.”
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a charity funding research to help find cures for kids with cancer. The Foundation raises money for childhood cancer research primarily through international head-shaving events.
Volunteers, sponsored by family, friends and employers, shave their heads in solidarity with children who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment.
This awesome! God bless Saltus and its students for volunteering for such a worthy and noble cause.
This school teaches thier students how to be selfless and that the world is so much bigger than the 2 by 4 space they occupy.
Good Job everyone involved. This and the one at BAA are fantastic events and I encourage everyone to support and to participate as well.
