Sir Leroy Trotman To Visit CedarBridge Academy
Following his keynote address at the Triennial Delegates’ Conference this week [Mar 11], Barbadian trade unionist Sir Leroy Trotman will pay a visit to CedarBridge Academy on Friday, March 13.
A spokesperson said, “Barbados Trade Unionist Sir Leroy Trotman will visit CedarBridge Academy Friday March 14, 2014 from 9.30am through 11.00am.
“He will meet with the Principal and Ministry officials upon arrival. Arrangements have been made for him to meet with S1 and S2 students who are studying trade unionism in their Bermuda Social Studies course. This will provide an opportunity for a question and answer session with students and Sir Trotman.
“His visit to CedarBridge Academy will end with a tour of the school and an opportunity to meet with Barbadian teachers on staff. Sir Trotman is visiting Bermuda as a guest speaker at a conference being held at Liberty Theatre, for members of the BPSU.”
Hailing from the Barbados Workers’ Union, Senator Sir Roy Trotman has been a respected unionist for many years. According to a spokesperson for this week’s Triennial Delegates’ Conference, “Senator Sir Roy Trotman is a highly respected trade unionist who, since joining the labour movement in 1971, has achieved notable results throughout his career.
“He joined the Barbados Workers’ Union as Personal Assistant to the then General Secretary before he was appointed Deputy General Secretary/Director of Organizing nine years later.
“Nationally, Sir Roy served as a Member of the Lower House from 1986-1994. He is a founder and President of the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados, a position he has held since 1995.
“Internationally, Sir Roy distinguished himself as the first black President of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions [ICFTU], now known as the International Trade Union Congress [ITUC]. He held this position for two consecutive four year terms since 1992 and currently serves the organization as a Vice President.
“He also serves with distinction as one of the Directors of the International Labour Organization [ILO], where he was elected to and served as Chairperson of the Workers’ Group of the ILO Governing Body since 2002.
“Sir Roy is an alumnus of the University of the West Indies [UWI], where he gained a degree in English, Economics, and History. He also completed his Masters in Labour Education from Rutgers University in 1976.
“His commitment and dedication to outstanding national, regional, and international service was given national recognition first in 2002 when he was made Knight of St. Andrew in the Independence Honours, and then again in October 2006 during UWI’s graduation ceremonies when he was conferred with an Honourary Doctor of Laws degree.”
