Weekend Film Series: On My Way, Mr Watterson

March 10, 2014

A documentary about the enduring popularity of comic strip characters Calvin and Hobbes, and a French comedic drama featuring an award-nominated performance by actress Catherine Deneuve, will feature at the Weekend Film Series on Sunday March 16.

Dear Mr. Watterson, winner of a Jury Prize at the Wisconsin Film Festival, will screen at 3 p.m. while On My Way – for which Deneuve earned a Best Actress nomination at the Cesar Awards, France’s national film awards – screens at 5.15 p.m.

Much-beloved comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes, appeared in thousands of newspapers worldwide for more than 10 years. Although the strip’s creator, Bill Watterson, retired the strip on New Year’s Eve, 1995, and to this day refuses offers to license the strip’s images for commercial use, the popularity of Calvin and Hobbes endures.

On My Way – Official Trailer

This feel-good documentary is pure joy for fans of Calvin and Hobbes, a love letter to a comic strip and its creator who made such an impact on the lives of so many of us.

The filmmaker discusses Watterson’s influence on other cartoonists – Berke Breathed [Bloom County] and Stephan Pastis [Pearls Before Swine] among them – and discusses cartooning as an art form. At its heart, though, the film is about a boy and his tiger.

Deneuve stars as Bettie, an aging beauty queen whose lover leaves her for a younger woman in this charming, life-embracing comedic drama. Left alone to deal with the financial problems facing her family’s restaurant, what begins as a quick drive to clear her head turns into a full-fledged road trip through the picturesque French countryside.

Along the way there are chance meetings, an ex-Miss France gala, renewed ties with her estranged daughter and grandson, and possibly, at the end of the road, love.

On My Way was selected as the Opening Film for the annual Rendezvous with French Cinema showcase in New York.

Tickets are on sale now at the Oceans Gift Shop, BUEI, or by calling 294-0204.

The ‘Weekend Film Series’, sponsored by Gosling’s, is a joint production of Bermuda Documentary Film Festival director Duncan Hall and the BUEI.
