6th Annual Bermuda Day In London Celebration
Spredluv & CKC Corporation are getting set to present the 6th Annual Bermuda Day in London Celebrations, with the Film, Books, and Acoustic Night on May 1st and the family day and all-day party on May 4th at Camden Lock in London.
A spokesperson said, “On Thursday, May 1, we will celebrate some of Bermuda’s many valued treasures, from books and short films by Bermudians authors and producers to live music.
“This night will truly be a great addition to Bermuda Day in London 2014, with the introduction of books written and published by Bermudian Dr. David Chapman and other Bermudian writers through CKC BOOKS, a subsidiary of partner organization CKC Corporation.”
Featured books include:
- Dr. David Chapman’s “Daddy and I Explore” series
- “A Bird’s Eye View: Black Males and Bermuda’s Education System” by Dr. Vincent Williams
- “Memoirs of my Scars” by DeJon Simons
- The Bermy Chick Chronicles [Streets are Listening, GOD is Watching, ONYX, Rekindling, and When Lightning Strikes] series by Cha’Von Clarke
- “Cell 6.3.7.” by Kellan Lewis, currently incarcerated at Westgate Correctional Facility in Bermuda
- Bermuda’s first children and teen anthologies of creative work [writing and art] will be available during the night
“This is an awesome opportunity for talented Bermudian writers. For the first time, Bermuda’s books will be promoted and available for purchase at Camden Market in London, which means that people from all over the world will have access to the island’s talented artists,” said CEO of CKC BOOKS Bermudian Cha’Von K. Clarke.
“CKC BOOKS will release projects on education in Bermuda, exotic poetry and short stories, and social challenges in Bermuda, many to be featured as a special edition at the Bermuda Day in London event. The books are also available in the CKC Books store at ckcbooks.com or ckccorporation.org.
Short films by Bermudian film producers will also feature for the first time at Bermuda Day in London, including:
- “Poverty in Paradise: The Price We Pay” by Lucinda Spurling, award winning producer, director and writer, and Andrew Kirkpatrick, which explores the causes and consequences of the widening wealth gap in Bermuda, the struggles families face in providing for themselves and their children, and the consequential spiral in crime plaguing the community will make an appearance.
- “Life Anonymous” by award winning screenwriters, filmmakers, and creatives Kara Smith and Karli Powell. The short was selected for screening at Cannes International Film Festival [Short Film Corner] and was created on a shoestring budget of £30 in just three short weeks. The story follows a day in the life of Arthur O’Neal, a newly homeless war veteran with an epic drug habit.
- An excerpt from the film “Fabric – History of the Portuguese in Bermuda” by Milton Raposo will be shown. Fabric documents the story of the Portuguese in Bermuda.
- “Boogaloo,” a music video navigating love in the modern world by Milton Raposo and Ben Cooper.
- “Africa Connection: Memories” by Dana Selassie, in which students of Bermuda’s Cedarbridge Academy journal the experience of their journey to the motherland, providing a candid account of their time spent in Senegal, Morocco, and Mauritania.
“On Sunday, May 4, Bermudian culture and heritage will once again take centre stage in the heart of Camden Market in London, allowing us the chance to indulge in music, dancing, games and, of course, fantastic food.
“There will be jumbo-sized games in the Kidz & Family Zone, professional face painting, free play and instructor-led arts and crafts, Gombey hats, tissue paper activities, and more. Books will be on sale again at the Sunday event and live performances will take place by talents currently residing in the UK.

“Bermudian DJs will spin music by Bermudian and popular hits, keeping the audience on their feet the whole day and night. Authentic Bermudian cuisine, starting with a codfish and potato breakfast from 10.00am through 12.00pm and additional delicious island eats throughout the day. Rum swizzle and dark and stormy will also be on offer, along with Gosling Black Rum.
“Bermuda Day in London has grown considerably since its humble beginnings back in 2009. Bermuda Day in London, a free family-friendly event, aims to celebrate and promote Bermudian culture, heritage and history through music, cuisine, and more. The event is a beautiful advert for Bermuda and her talents and continues to be a great outing for many Londoners and Bermudians living in the UK.
“Our 2014 event is sure to be another great day for all to come together to party and enjoy island flavours as we send Bermudian vibes across the Camden Lock so the world can sample a taste of Bermuda,” said founder and organiser Beatnik Rubaine.
Cha’Von Clarke added, “We expect to see people from all over the UK, US, and Europe, including Bermudians who have relocated around the world and those visiting London from the island. All are welcomed to celebrate with us.”
Regarding the event’s music, Jeremy Blades, a member of the production team, said, “We wont disappoint. The music is always nice and the talent is varied and plentiful.”
“We’ll be celebrating our 6th anniversary in true island-style with music, a limbo competition, and tons of memories at The Lockside Lounge Rum Shack throughout the day, then party all night long inside Lockside Lounge! The vibes will begin on 1 May with the books and film night and then continue to build on the terrace of Lockside lounge on 6 May from 12pm, and continue inside until 2am.”
