Island Wide Search For William Grange Today

May 10, 2014

Despite extensive search efforts by both the police and community over the past week, William Grange has still not been located and an island wide search got underway at 8am this morning [May 10] in an effort to locate the missing Canadian man.

A police spokesperson said, “‎This morning at 8am, just under 100 persons embarked on a search for missing man William Grange.

“Police were accompanied by sister agencies HMS Corrections, HMS Customs, the Bermuda Regiment and members of the community. The searches will include. West, East and Central areas

“We are also asking the boating community both today and tomorrow to please be vigilant and continue to search the shore line and look in all boats and marine vessels for the missing man.

“A group of volunteer divers have also offered their assistance in conjunction with this weekend’s extended search efforts in the Cambridge Beaches area. It is also anticipated that they will be utilised to search two area ponds – Pittman’s pond and Long Bay pond – by punt, as diving these ponds is not feasible, during today or tomorrow, Sunday May 11th.

“We will keep the public updated.”

Mr. Grange — who suffers from short term memory loss — arrived in Bermuda from Napanee, Canada last week and has not been seen since approximately 10.00pm on Friday [May 2] evening.

The 67 year old came for a 10-day vacation with his wife, and was staying at the Cambridge Beaches Resort in Sandys. His son John Grange has traveled to Bermuda, and speaking at a press conference earlier this week he said that his father may have went for a walk and become confused.

Mr. Grange was last seen wearing beige pants, a blue shirt, brown jacket and brown shoes and is described as a Caucasian male, 5’9″ tall with white hair. His son has indicated that his father may possibly have a grey beard by now, so he would appear different than the photo below.

  1. Sad Times says:

I would have thought those ponds mentioned would have been checked already and not just starting to look there today and tomorrow. That should have been the first places to search.

  2. seenit says:

    This is now pretty grim…

  3. Squirt says:

I hope this is not another episode of the pass. When a tourist faked his death and left BDA under a fake passport. His clothes were found on the beach… They found that guyin some other part of the world… All for insurance money… Just thinkn

    • monica says:

no not a scam, I know this family… so sad

  4. Squirt says:

Check the airport departure photos of people leaving please…

    Just a thought

  5. Coffee says:

Life insurance . Does he have it ? If so , who took out the policy , what is the amount and how recent was it bought ?

If this man isn’t found today , then someone needs to start asking some uncomfortable questions as a matter of course .

    • Justice! says:

      Coffee,

The place to ask those uncomfortable questions is with his family.

  6. Shameful says:

I don’t know if this will get printed or not but it is true. The police messed up-they did not take this seriously enough in the beginning. The first 24 hours after a disappearance are vital but the police had a nonchalant attitude to it as far as actually looking for him-the serious searches didn’t start until days later; before that, it seems that they believed he’d just return on his own.

I know this because a friend of mine in Dockyard talked with him the day after he went for the walk. My friend is a vendor in Dockyard and Mr. Grange bought something from him/her. When s/he later heard that Mr. Grange was missing, s/he called the police and got passed from person to person and finally left a message with no-one returning his/her call! It’s only when s/he contacted the hotel that anyone came out to speak to him/her but valuable time was lost.

The family is aware of this so heaven help us if he isn’t found-Bermuda will be blamed and look bad to the Canadian people AGAIN.

    • SL says:

Did this man say he was Mr. Grange and why didn’t he ask for help when speaking with the vendor? I had heard something about him buying some hotdogs up in Dockyard but that proved false, not sure if this is the same situation or not.

      • Mayan says:

@Sl: I heard about him buying hotdogs as well but I don’t think it was proven false. I don’t want to give anything away but details I heard seem to point to it being him. If true, that would have been the last thing of substance he’s eaten. Poor man-what would he have eaten or drank since then? This situation is getting beyond serious. I wish there was more I could do. We all think Bermuda is small until something like this happens and then you realize there’s a million-and-one places a person could be.

      • Annie says:

Why didn’t he ask for help of this vendor? What a stupid question! Maybe for the same reason he hasn’t asked help of ANYONE…he is fearful and confused and at that point maybe didn’t even realize he was lost. If we missed this opportunity then that is really terrible.

    • Tricks are for Kids says:

Stop speaking unnecessary negativity into existence……I hardly doubt that this would be the case. His family is aware of his pre existing medical condition and I seriously doubt that they would blame any one in Bermuda for his disappearance.

MANY islanders have come out and rallied their support in the hopes of locating Mr. Grange.

      • Mayan says:

@Tricks: Bermuda would be blamed if a Bermudian harmed him in some way, or if delays or incompetence by the police came to light. We can’t be blamed for his condition or the fact that he wandered off but if someone took advantage of him because of his condition, of course we’d be blamed.

The whole country was blamed for the death of a young girl that had nothing to do with us and caused us as much outrage as Canadians but that didn’t stop them from trying to boycott our whole country, now did it?

      • Mayan says:

Also-what’s talking negativity into existence? You really believe in that new age mumbo-jumbo?

    • Sick n Tired says:

Bermuda will look bad again? Well before we go that far, let’s get a couple of questions answered . . .why was he allowed to go out at 10pm by himself, knowing he has short term memory problems? He has gone missing before, so why would you allow him to come to an unknown island without someone who is able to keep up with him if his wife couldn’t.

While I hope he is found safe, I have to say that I am shocked by the huge effort being taken to try and locate him. We recently had Rudy Smith go missing, however he didn’t get the time and attention and resources put forth for his search. I could only imagine how his family feels as they watch this all out effort to find this man!!! IJS!!!!

      • Shut up with this Rudy stuff says:

Everyone knows what happened to Rudy… (I won’t say it). & if you don’t, you’ve been living under a rock instead of on it.

    • foldgers says:

I dont think Bermuda should be blamed for this one in any way. One cannot report someone missing who is an adult, until 24 hours. I will go there.. Why did the family allow this man to go walking at night in a foreign country , knowing he gets confused and has medication and short term memory. Why did they wait so long to report. This man would already be confused having been on a plane trip. Before we start accusing ourselves of negligence, lets start with the first neglect; allowing someone in that condition to go walking alone in the first instance.

  7. Terry says:

I will save my comments for later even though I just made one.

After all this time, something is amiss.
    8 days?

    10pm at night.

  8. Maybe with his short term memory lost he didn’t remember he was lost IJS so to not know and not say he is and going on with everyday life its a mystery… Maybe he jumped on the cruise ship, ran away from his wife, or jumped on a ferry and if that’s the case search the whole island not just the western end… And if the woman called the police once she realised he was missing why did she get passed around with no one returning her call after he was officially missing that’s F’d up… They don’t care

  9. Just like when Rudy Smith went missing the police was asked to get a search team together when he was missing 4 days and the family was denied, the family then called back after a week and was told you can have a search team and we will support you but we are not the 1s (Police) doing the search if you find anything call us and we will come to you just in case its a crime scene and bones were found that was set on fire and the police said its a horse and didn’t even check to see if it was human remains they wasn’t even bothered by it they was convinced it was a horse 3 days before the search (Not hear say found it myself and called them) and that wasn’t printed in the paper nor was the family informed about it…

  10. IJS says:

Why doesn’t his family call in the psychic lady in Bermuda she may be able to help IJS.

  11. Robert says:

I am amazed at some of these remarks, “check the airport, faked disappearance, insurance fraud” the man is sick is not capable of any of this, I doubt if he even had any money or much on him.

  12. Bozey says:

Check credit card trail..if any. According to a police officer Mr. Grange left with his cards…

  13. X man says:

I have heard so many scenarios by now. – people are comming up with all sorts of storys at this point.
not seen him the St.Davids area. – but you never know!
I would like to think that he is safe somewhere.

  14. Kendra obryan says:

Mr grange would never leave his family. He has a wonderful life, here at home. Anyone wasting their time discussing these options of him taking off….are wasting precious time.

    • Judy Hogan says:

I have to agree with Kendra Obryan. He is a very respected man by his community he would never do some of the things that people are hinting about..Instead of voicing your negativity online which the family doesn’t need to see they’re going through enough so instead of sitting here online put that energy where it’s needed,HELP IN THE SEARCH for this kind caring person he would do it for you.For all you people that are helping in the search i’m so proud of each and every one of you.I do believe he will be found safe and sound with the help of all of you.you will always be remembered by family and friends of what you are doing.God Bless you all.My heart goes out to him and his family at this horrible time.I pray every night he’ll be found safe and sound huggs

  15. Mumbo jumbo says:

We know that he is somewhere….we just need to find out where that somplace is….think about his frame of mind and or lack of said mindset…and attempt that same mindless adventure….repeat after me…”tra la la lah”…take a few steps and forget where you are at ten o’clock at night ,”without”,mindful supervision or care…..

    • Justice! says:

Has it occurred to any of you that he may have wandered into a cave and lost his sense of direction? My psychic powers tells me that he went overboard.

  16. Mumbo jumbo says:

I am sorry however that this fellow has to endure this indignity….there are those who require supervision, and one basic thing, why not give him a phone with a gps???????????????????or microchip gps?????????????

  17. juswonderin says:

I think the first thing to do would be to check the cameras at cambridge and then see if he jumped in a taxi or walked…cctv? I think this man would be appearing out of place with his conditions and someone would have reported it by now if he was wondering around public places…

  18. Justice! says:

Is this Mr. Grange’s very first trip to Bermuda? If I get a ‘yes’ response I will then raise another question.
