Photo Set #1: Relay For Life Fundraising Event
Huge crowds turned out at the National Sports Centre last night [May 30] for the Relay For Life event which got underway at 6.00pm and continues until 6.00pm this evening.
The team based fundraising event helps to raise awareness and funds to support cancer programmes in Bermuda. During the 24 hours, team members are taking turns walking the track while ceremonies were also held on the field to celebrate survivors and remember lost loved ones.
95% of funds raised during the Relay will remain in Bermuda to support Bermuda Cancer and Health in their efforts to cover the costs of cancer screening tests for those who cannot afford it, improve access to cancer treatment in Bermuda, and deliver education and awareness programmes.
5% of funds raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society to help fund their cancer research, prevention, and care programmes.
Speaking previously, Tara Soares, Executive Director of Bermuda Cancer and Health, said, “We are excited to bring this important community event to Bermuda for the first time.
“Each of us in Bermuda has been touched by cancer, either personally or through knowing a friend, colleague or family member who has been diagnosed with some form of cancer.
Ms Soares added, “In 2012, 236 people in Bermuda heard the diagnosis ‘you have cancer’ and 82 people died from it. Those numbers could be lowered through better education and access to treatment, and that’s what the Relay is about.
“It is a fun way for all of us to get involved and do our part to remember those we’ve lost, celebrate our survival and recovery stories, and help fight back against this terrible disease.”
